UPDATED 11.37AM John Key is gunning for a fourth term in Government, but says National has plenty of talent to step into his shoes when the need arises.

The Prime Minister told Chris Lynch the party hasn't discussed an alternative leader to him, but no one lasts forever.

He said a lot's happened in the decade he's been leader.

"There's been a lot of talent brought in and a fair bit of recycling has gone on.

"My main point really would be I'm thoroughly enjoying the job, I want to stay but look you know, one day when they have to choose another leader I'm confident there'd be people in our ranks."

A Newshub-Reid Research poll has National dropping 1.9 percent, to 45.1, and the Labour-Greens alliance up 1.8 percent, to 44.2.

Mr Key said it's likely his party will need a 'friend' in another party to win the next General Election.

He said they've been well served by previous coalition partners so far, but partners can change.

Mr Key said National could find a partnership in either Act, United Future or the Maori Party to win a fourth term, but it's unlikely it would ever align with the Green Party.
