  • From Flood To Feast: How Regenerative Organic Farming Yields More Crop Per Drop with Caryl Levine & Ken Lee, founders of Lotus Foods

Every culture has a different use of rice and how to grow it. Some farm practices harm our environment by damaging the soil through massive disturbances. In this episode, Caryl Levine and Ken Lee, Authors of Rice Is Life and Co-founders and Co-CEOs of Lotus Foods, explain that the future of food lies in the practice of regenerative agriculture. Minimizing the physical disturbance of soil keeps a huge amount of carbon dioxide from releasing into the atmosphere. This practice of building organic matter on the soil not only helps mitigate climate change effects but also creates a resilient environment where plants thrive, resulting in more productive yields. Tune in to this conversation and learn more from Caryl and Ken as they share more insights about the future of food and regenerative agriculture.

    Key takeaways from the episode:

    · How rice is grown using less water

    · Benefits of regenerative farming

    · Practical steps to try regenerative farming

    · Why Rice Is Life

    · The movement to fight climate change through changing methods in agriculture

  • Food Waste Recycling: Give Table Scraps A Second Life with Chris O'Brien, Founder of Hungry Giant Recycling

With so much trash produced by the food we eat, looking for sustainable ways to reuse them must always be a top priority in any organization or community. Without implementing sustainable food waste recycling methods, these will only continue piling up in landfills. Chris O'Brien has found an efficient way to address this problem that goes beyond compost: using bio-dehydration systems to turn food waste into compostable food stock. Joining Corinna Bellizzi, he talks about how their electric-powered machines at Hungry Giant Waste Systems provide innovative solutions for the handling and management of organic material. Chris explains how reducing food waste through their products can lead to healthier soil, reduce methane gas production, and make recycling much easier to do even right at your own home.

  • Part 3 of 3: How Regeneration Can Change The Future Of Farming And Winemaking With Carlo Mondavi

As climate change continues to worsen, the future of farming is at stake. Fossil fuels used in farming equipment contribute to global warming and devastating forest fires destroy crop quality. The best way to mitigate these adverse effects is by transitioning to regenerative methods. Joining Corinna Bellizzi is Carlo Mondavi, Co-Founder and Chief Farming Officer of Monarch Tractor, the world’s first fully electric autonomous tractor. Carlo explains how their invention, combined with sustainable agricultural practices, helps farmers from all over reduce their carbon footprint, improve field safety, and streamline operations. He discusses what it takes for regenerative farming to reach mainstream status, giving the planet a breath of fresh air – and a huge chance to increase its longevity.

  • Part 2 of 3: Farm To Table Pioneer Champions Sustainable Farming with Monarch Tractor - featuring Alice Waters, Founder of Chez Panisse

Join Corinna Bellizzi for press event coverage of Monarch Tractor's launch in early December 2022 at their Livermore, California facility. In today's coverage you are introduced to Alice Waters as we are invited to think about the source, quality, and flavor of the food that graces our plates and nourishes our bodies each day. Alice shares what it was like to dine in France in the 60s and how that impacted her food journey. She invites us to think about source, about locality, and to love farmers. You'll also learn about her recent work to bring farming to schoolchildren as we seek to inspire and educate young people around the globe.

We also meet Robert Henson, President of the wine and spirits division at Constellation Brands - a world leader in the alcoholic beverage space. They now own the Mondavi winery brand, and therefore have history with the Mondavi family (more about that in part 3). The reason this story is so critical is simple. Early adopters and big advocates are central to the success of any new technology.

Before we wrap up today's episode we hear from the CEO and co-founder of Monarch Tractor, Praveen Penmetsa. Praveen shares the story of farmers in India and the reality of farming today. A perspective that there's no future in farming is shared, with Monarch Tractor playing part in the resurrection of the faltering profits seen in the world of agriculture.

Elaine Chukan Brown once again operates as the MC for the event.

    About Alice Waters:

Alice Louise Waters is an American chef, restaurateur, and author. In 1971 she opened Chez Panisse, a Berkeley, California restaurant famous for its role in creating the farm-to-table movement and for pioneering California cuisine.

Waters has authored the books Chez Panisse Cooking (with Paul Bertolli), The Art of Simple Food I and II, and 40 Years of Chez Panisse. Her memoir, Coming to my Senses: The Making of a Counterculture Cook was published in September 2017 and released in paperback in May 2018.

Waters created the Chez Panisse Foundation in 1996, and the Edible Schoolyard program at the Martin Luther King Middle School in Berkeley. She is a national public policy advocate for universal access to healthy, organic foods. Her influence in the fields of organic foods and nutrition inspired Michelle Obama's White House organic vegetable garden program.

    About Carlo Mondavi

Carlo Mondavi is Chief Farming Officer of Monarch Tractors. Carlo is an expert viticulturist with experience in Organic, Biodynamic, and Permaculture Farming. He is a fourth generation winegrower from the world-renowned Mondavi family and is co-founder of Raen Winery, as well as a partner at Continuum Estate. Carlo is the co-founder of the Monarch Challenge, an effort focused on elevating farming by eliminating herbicides and powerful chemicals from farms in Sonoma, Napa and beyond. The Monarch Challenge is the namesake of Monarch Tractor.

Carlo Mondav has put the Monarch Tractor to work at his own RAEN winery. Founded In 2013 with his brother Dante, RAEN stands for “Research in Agriculture and Enology Naturally,” which speaks to the core ethos of Carlo’s farming & winemaking practices: to farm at the highest level and in unison with nature. RAEN implements permaculture, biodynamic and organic farming practices in its vineyards. Carlo Mondavi is an advocate in the wine industry for the sustainable farming practices he follows at RAEN. During his journey, he founded the Monarch Challenge in 2017 to bring awareness around clean farming practices, which ultimately led to the solution of the Monarch Tractor.
