Today's episode is special. We're trying out a new format where I go out and audit YouTube channels. Today I'm putting Armchair Expert with Dax Shephard under my microscope. It started appearing on my YouTube algorithm a few weeks ago so I decided to dig and see what I could figure out. I look into the new deal he struck with Amazon's podcast company, Wondery, and what that actually means and how it functions for Dax and Monica Padman. I take a look at playlists, channel layouts, and give my opinion on how they uploaded the entire back catalog at once. Was this a solid launch strategy?

I always read a lot of valid complaints about podcasts, but I hear about an equal amount of invalid ones. The biggest one being "unnecessary self censorship." Yes, we all know YouTube used to be the Wild Wild West and you could pretty much say anything and show anything, but as more and more mothers began clutching their pearls, more and more rules got put in place. Even if those rules weren't meant for comedy podcasts, they're not excluded from now following those rules. And breaking any of those rules becomes a whole mess that no one wants to deal with. Who's fault is it that this system is so flawed? The answer is clear: it's YouTube's fault. Is it too late to fix it? Probably. But if podcast fans started complaining to YouTube more than podcasters, the complaints might actually reach the right people that can make a change. Until then, enjoy the watered down version of what you used to like.

A lot of people think they need a big production studio and expensive equipment, but this case study proves something more important will actually be the thing responsible for your big views... the quality of your subject matter.
