Three months into the beginning of her MAT recovery journey, Amanda’s husband lost his life to a fatal overdose. The details around his death were suspect, and though briefly investigated as a homicide, no one was ever charged in the death of Amanda’s husband. Their children were just four and eight at the time, and Amanda managed to stay sober and cope with her grief while suddenly becoming a single mother. Four years later, Amanda now works for Wake Up, Carolina, a non profit organization in Mt Pleasant, Charleston. Wake up, Caroline is a recovery community organization (RCO), an independent, non-profit organization led and governed by representatives of the local recovery community. They organize recovery-focused advocacy activities, carry out recovery-focused community education and outreach programs, and provide peer-based recovery support services.
