Chicks Talking Footy

Bec, Fi and Motty changed gears a little bit this week! We chatted to the fans that have been barracking for their teams in very different ways this year – Yvette Wroby devoted St Kilda fan, Alice Murray lover of the Bombers and Ann Dahl (may be a relation of Bec) long suffering Crows fan.

We managed to cover the big news of the week while we were at it, Dreamtime, Save the Flag and the harrowing story of Robert Muir and his experience with racism as a player.

This week is Sir Doug Nicholls Indigenous round in the AFL and the Chicks had a beautiful yarn with Aunty Pam Pedersen (Nicholls) a proud Yorta Yorta Elder, a passionate advocate for her community and Sir Doug’s youngest daughter.

Pam provides great insight into the significance of the AFL Indigenous Round being named after her father, to Sir Doug Nicholls football journey, to how important the Aboriginal flag is to Aboriginal people, to the excitement of the Dreamtime game being played in Darwin for the first time.  We loved this yarn and hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

Bree, Bec and Fi also manage to talk about footy news bubbling around and review the Round 12 matches. Give us a listen.

Fi and Motty caught up with Luke Power, Head of Development at Carlton Football Club about hub life in WA and the upcoming Carlton Respects game this week.

The Blues will wear orange socks for the fifth annual AFL Carlton Respects game in order to raise awareness of gender equality for the prevention of violence against women.

Orange is the international colour of harmony and the Club will use the week to not only highlight the issue of domestic violence but promote healthy relationships and the important role these play in creating a safe, equal and loving space for all.

On average, one woman a week is murdered by her current or former partner while one in three Australian women have experienced physical violence since the age of 15. This is unacceptable.

The Chicks gave a shout out to all footy fans in locked down Melbourne, and discussed round 9 and 10 because we weren’t sure which was being played right now. At the dinner table they discussed Mitch Cleary being stood down and then not stood down and Nathan Buckley playing tennis in quarantine. We also caught up with Luke Power, Head of Football at Carlton Football Club about the Carlton Respects game this week (a game that promotes gender equality and the prevention of violence against women).

Tonight we celebrate the 5th annual AFL pride game between the StKilda football Club and the Sydney Swans Football Club. Whilst most of our community can’t be there in person this season we check-in with both clubs and catch up with Club CEO’s Matt Finnis and Tom Harley on the advancement of PRIDE, diversity and inclusion within the AFL and society.

The Chicks discussed all the footy news, where the Grand Final will be played, the umpires admitting they were wrong, whether players should still play while up on sexual assault charges and reminisced about Pride Games past as there is big Pride Game news about to drop! You’ll hear a past chat from Tanya Hosch and Sam Mostyn from the inaugural Pride Game in 2017 to celebrate.

Footy’s gone mad. Again.

Melbourne lockdown take 2 has seen all the teams flee interstate and the Chicks Talking Footy team to flee to their bedrooms to record the show from home.

We chatted to Vetti McGill, Hawthorn Pride member and friend of the show, about what it is like to actually go to a game of footy at the moment. Shame her Hawks didn’t win.

Dinner Table was the scene of an epic Bree rant about…..you guessed it Richmond, the Dimma press conference and the storm in a teacup it created.

There’s always a lot to talk about in footy and this week was no exception. The Brisbane Lions Linc McCarthy filled the chicks in on the AFL2020 landscape from a player and club point of view. Brett Murphy from the AFLPA shed some light on what the organisation has been doing to assist players during these uncertain pandemic times.

Also Bec gave us a couple of quality rants which are always worth listening to.
