  • Ep. 163 — HALLOWEEN (2018) with Jeremy Johnson

Back in our Best of 2018 episodes, we had a poll to let our listeners vote on their favorite film of the year, dubbed the People's Choice for Best Psychotronic Film of 2018. We made a promise that whatever film should win would be the subject of a future episode of the podcast.

This week, we're fulfilling that promise by taking a look at your favorite 2018 genre film, David Gordon Green's HALLOWEEN.

When we covered the original HALLOWEEN franchise in October of 2018, we invited on friend of the show and HALLOWEEN super fan Jeremy Johnson for a couple of episodes, so we found it only fitting that he join us again for a look at this "recalibration" of the HALLOWEEN series.

We'll discuss all of the behind-the-scenes drama that lead to the making of the film following the 2009 release of Rob Zombie's HALLOWEEN 2 (and the unmade sequels left behind in its wake), plus how the guy behind ALL THE REAL GIRLS and PINEAPPLE EXPRESS got involved in a horror film.

And of course, we'll get into just how the film stacks up against its predecessors and how it fits into the current horror climate.

Join us next week as we begin our countdown to our favorite film of 2019 and the announcement of your pick for Best Psychotronic Film of the year!

Visit our website at www.psychotronicfilmsociety.com. There you'll find all of our past episodes and our full list of Psychotronic Hall of Famers!

  • Ep. 162 — RETURN OF THE JEDI (1983) with Todd Davis [George Lucas, Ep. 3]

It’s hard to overstate just how impactful STAR WARS was. It is a film that changed the landscape of cinema forever, and continues to be a cultural juggernaut to this day. But it was a movie created by a quiet kid who was into FLASH GORDON serials and experimental art films, and a film that nobody thought would amount to much of anything. For this series, we’re celebrating the original STAR WARS trilogy, and inducting its creator, George Lucas, into the Psychotronic Hall of Fame.

This week, our look at the original trilogy concludes with RETURN OF THE JEDI! We're joined by special guest Todd Davis on this episode to discuss the film's creation, its legacy, and George Lucas' attempt to course correct the series after not being terribly happy with the previous film.

How does RETURN OF THE JEDI hold up and where does it rank in the overall trilogy? And yeah, we're gonna have to talk about these Special Editions...

This week, the trilogy continues with a look at what many consider the best of the series, THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK!

On this episode, discover how Lucas went about conceiving and writing the follow-up to the biggest film of all time, and why he decided not to helm this one himself. We'll get into behind-the-scenes stories on the film and discuss its legacy, not only as a part of the STAR WARS series, but in the greater film world.

  • Ep. 160 — STAR WARS (1977) [George Lucas, Ep. 1]

First, we have to go all the way back to 1977, where it all began. Actually, we’re going back even further, to George Lucas’s childhood in Modesto, California, to explore how a kid who grew up with dreams of becoming a race car driver turned into an adult who was into the experimental films of Stan Brakhage and the arthouse films of Fellini, Truffaut, and Kurosawa. And how that guy ended up, by his third film, making the biggest piece of pop culture that has ever existed.

This episode covers the biggest film that we’ve ever attempted to tackle, as we discuss the creation of STAR WARS and its huge impacts on the film industry and pop culture in general.

  • Ep. 159 — SMALL SOLDIERS (1998) [Joe Dante, Ep. 4]

For our first official inductee into the new Psychotronic Hall of Fame, we could think of no one better than Joe Dante, a director who embodies everything that psychotronic cinema stands for, from his roots as a Monster Kid and graduate of the Corman school, through his later mainstream breakthrough, which he achieved without ever abandoning his love of classic genre cinema. For the entire month of December, we'll be exploring the films and career of Joe Dante.

For our fourth and final week of this Joe Dante series, we're going to fast forward by a few years to 1998, for a film that works well as a companion piece to last week's film, GREMLINS.

This week, we'll discuss how SMALL SOLDIERS was created and how during the course of its creation, it was swallowed up by the marketing machine, resulting in a very different film than what the filmmakers had originally intended.

As we discuss the film, we'll try to decide if we think it's eligible to be a part of the Psychotronic Canon, but we're gonna let you decide if it goes in!

Well, it's Christmas time! So how could we pass up the opportunity to talk about one of our absolute favorite psychotronic holiday flicks — and one that just so happens to fit in with this month's subject?

This week, we're talking about the classic Joe Dante film, GREMLINS!

We're joined this week by very special guests John Ferrer and Scott Dunlap, two of the brains behind McArathon, a 24-hour festival of bizarre, rare, and cult holiday entertainment! McArathon XV is happening on December 21-22, from 3pm to 3pm, at The Aviary at Birds Fly South Ale Project in Greenville, SC! Find more information on this year's event here.

We're excited to have John and Scott join us to discuss the impact of GREMLINS, as well as its origins and some behind-the-scenes stories.

Will GREMLINS go down in history as a member of the Psychotronic Canon? It's up to you! Be sure to cast your vote in this week's poll!

  • Ep. 157 — THE HOWLING (1981) with Jeremy Johnson [Joe Dante, Ep. 2]

After the unexpected success of PIRANHA (both critically and commercially), Joe Dante began getting calls from Hollywood to make a horror film. The one he ended up coming on board for is the film we’re talking about this week, the 1981 werewolf flick THE HOWLING.

Joining us this week is special guest Jeremy Johnson! We’ll discuss how Dante got involved and how the film was adapted from its original source material (and the many changes that were made by returning Dante collaborator John Sayles), as well as how the iconic special effects were created by future effects legend Rob Bottin.

We’ve nominated this one for the Psychotronic Canon as well, so let us know if you think that THE HOWLING is an essential piece of cult movie history!
