  • Ep. 22 - CLOVERFIED (2008)

Kaiju month continues at the Psychotronic Film Society! This week, we're bringing it back to America to discuss producer J.J. Abrams' American take on the kaiju: CLOVERFIELD (2008)!

Synopsis: Five young New Yorkers throw their friend a going-away party the night that a monster the size of a skyscraper descends upon the city. Told from the point of view of their video camera, the film is a document of their attempt to survive the most surreal, horrifying event of their lives.

Hosts Justin and Gary will make their cases as they discuss the film's unique take on the kaiju genre and delve into its use of 9/11 imagery. Will that be enough to get it into the Psychotronic Hall of Fame?

We’d love to hear from you! Contact us at any of the social media accounts listed below or give us a call at (864) 372-9931 and leave us a voicemail of 3 minutes or less and we’ll play it on the next show!

  • Ep. 21 - GODZILLA [aka GOJIRA] (1954)

April is Kaiju Month here at the Psychotronic Film Society and what better way to kick things off than with the King of the Monsters himself? This week, we're going all the way back to the original Japanese giant monster masterpiece GODZILLA (1954), or GOJIRA if you nasty.

Synopsis: Japan is thrown into a panic after several ships explode and are sunk near Odo Island. An expedition to the island led by paleontologist Professor Kyohei Yemani soon discover something more devastating than imagined in the form of a 164 foot tall monster whom the natives call Gojira. Now the monster begins a rampage that threatens to destroy not only Japan, but the rest of the world as well.

Hosts Justin and Gary talk about Godzilla's cultural and historical significance and take a deep dive into the (real life) history behind the film, and make their cases as to whether or not they believe that Big G deserves a spot in the hallowed halls of the Psychotronic Hall of Fame.

  • Ep. 20 - GRINDHOUSE [PLANET TERROR / DEATH PROOF] (2007)

This week on the show, we've nominated the Robert Rodriguez/Quentin Tarantino double feature GRINDHOUSE!

This grand (failed) experiment by the auteurs featured two full length films inspired by the sleaze that played New York's 42nd street theaters in the 1970s, with fake movie trailers in between by the likes of Rob Zombie, Edgar Wright and Eli Roth.

PLANET TERROR Synopsis: Two doctors find their graveyard shift inundated with townspeople ravaged by sores. Among the wounded is Cherry, a dancer whose leg was ripped from her body. As the invalids quickly become enraged aggressors, Cherry and her ex-boyfriend Wray lead a team of accidental warriors into the night.

DEATH PROOF Synopsis: Austin’s hottest DJ, Jungle Julia, sets out into the night to unwind with her two friends Shanna and Arlene. Covertly tracking their moves is Stuntman Mike, a scarred rebel leering from behind the wheel of his muscle car, revving just feet away.

Synopsis: With no clue how he came to be imprisoned, drugged and tortured for 15 years, a desperate businessman seeks revenge on his captors.

  • Ep. 18 - KING KONG (1933)

We're back this week with another nominee for the Psychotronic Hall of Fame! To celebrate the recent release of KONG: SKULL ISLAND (go listen to our minisode review if you haven't!), we're going all the way back to 1933 to take a look at the original big bad monster himself, KING KONG!

Synopsis: A film crew goes to a tropical island for an exotic location shoot and discovers a colossal giant gorilla who takes a shine to their female blonde star. He is then captured and brought back to New York City for public exhibition.

We'll delve into the innovative special effects techniques that were created for the film, as well as some of its deeper themes (and it's more controversial issues). Also discussed: gorilla dicks.

  • Review: KONG: SKULL ISLAND (2017)

It's Kong Week here at the Psychotronic Film Society! Later this week, we'll be taking a look at KING KONG (1933), but first, in our first ever minisode, we're taking a look at the just-released KONG: SKULL ISLAND!

How does the new film stand up to previous entries in the Kong canon and how does it prepare us for the upcoming Kongzillaverse? (I just made that word up, but we're going with it.) Check out our minisode to hear our review and let us know if this is a feature you'd like for us to continue in the future!

  • Ep. 17 - Redemption: BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER (1992)

We're back this week, with another Movie Redemption episode!

This week, we're discussing the much-maligned Joss Whedon-filmed horror-comedy BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER(1992).

SYNOPSIS: Blonde, bouncy Buffy is your typical high school cheerleader– her goal is to “marry Christian Slater and die” and nothing gets in her way when it’s time to shop. But all that changes when a strange man informs her she’s been chosen by fate to kill vampires. With the help of a romantic rebel, Buffy is soon spending school nights protecting L.A. from Lothos, the Vampire King, his sidekick, Lefty and their determined gang of bloodsuckers. It’s everything you’d expect from a teen queen in the Valley.

Of course, we all know that BTVS was the future inspiration for Whedon's hit TV series, so this week, our special guest is the host of the upcoming Buffyverse rewatch podcast Meet Me At The Bronze, Bunny Bishop! Will she convince our hosts and our listeners that BUFFY is worthy of redemption?

We’d love to hear from you! Contact us at any of the social media accounts listed below or give us a call at (864) 372-9931 and leave us a voicemail of 3 minutes or less and we’ll play it on the next show!

  • Ep. 16.3 - Best of 2016: Part 3

We're back with the third and final part of our massive look back at the best Psychotronic Films of 2016!

This go around, we'll continue to discuss some honorable mentions with our guests DJ Wilson, Will Benton and Todd Davis. We'll also be concluding our countdown to the number one Psychotronic Film of 2016! (Hint: It didn't win an Oscar!)

We'll also be closing out the show by revealing our listener's choice for their favorite of the year! The winner of our People's Choice Award will be discussed as a possible entrant into the Psychotronic Hall of Fame on a later episode.

Full disclosure: All three of these episodes were recorded in one long sitting and some of us were partaking in a bit of drink. So if some of us sound a bit hammered... we were! That's either going to make this the best or worst episode we've ever done. Either way, come back next week for a more traditional episode as we nominate another film for the Psychotronic Hall of Fame!
