805 Authentico, musician, and singer-songwriter Jake Smith AKA The White Buffalo swings by WSL HQ to join the Cold Beer Surf Club. Jake discusses his surf upbringing, connections with the Malloy brothers, and transition from playing division one baseball to being a professional musician. He reflects on his starving artist's struggle from living with his parents and waiting tables, to his music being featured in Shelter, Sons of Anarchy and selling out shows across the globe. He explains how he would call restaurants and different venues, playing a song on their voicemail in hopes of getting booked there. He dives deep into his song-writing process, shares untold memories growing up with the Malloys, and his joy for cooking and leftovers. He thrills about the visceral experience of playing sold-out live shows, unorthodox recording practices with producers like Jay Joyce and Shooter Jennings. He reveals how Bob Hurley and Paul Gomez funded his first album and gave him his start, his guitar model with Gibson, and teases his new film with 805 Beer that will coincide with his latest album release in September 2024.

Sublime frontman, musician, and son of the late and legendary Bradley Nowell, Jakob Nowell, joins the 805 Cold Beer Surf Club. Conner and Jakob talk about growing up in Long Beach and O’ahu, and how his upbringing inspired his music. He reflects on his father’s legacy with Sublime and the responsibility he feels to honor him as the new frontman of the legendary and beloved So Cal band. He describes performing in front of the biggest crowd he’s ever done at Coachella, their new hit single “Feel Like That,” and looking forward to performing at the US Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach. He discusses the duty he feels to Eric and Bud as the original members of the band to carry the torch despite originally not wanting to go down this path with Sublime. He talks about the serendipitous moment when he decided to be the band’s frontman and how the stories of Sublime’s visceral impact to their fans inspire him to do so. He details the struggles of being sober in the decadence of the music industry, juggling his own band Jakobs Castle, the release of their debut album ENTER: THE CASTLE, and how music is the healing he and the people need from generational trauma and pain. He explains how Eric, Bud, and Fletcher Dragge from Pennywise have mentored him in this industry and also pours one (water) out on the Cold Beer Surf Club rub in memory of a late teacher who truly inspired him.

805 Beer Authentico, Lakey Peterson, joins the Cold Beer Surf Club. After just barely missing the cut on the CT this year, Lakey cruised up to WSL HQ in El Segundo, CA to catch up with Conner. They reflect on growing up in the 805 and Lakey’s decision to move down to San Clemente. They reminisce on their NSSA days, and froth over Lakey’s pivotal frontside air to win the National Championships at Trestles in 2014, to working with Carissa Moore and Coco Ho in Nike’s celebrated film Leave A Message. They discuss how much the level on the women’s side has increased, even on the Challenger Series, and how that inspires Lakey to keep up. She talks about how even after 12 years on tour, she still feels like she has so much more to give, and wants to keep pursuing a World Title. She and Conner share stories about working with Glenn “Micro” Hall, and how much his coaching and mentorship has helped them both on and off the tour. They talk about Pipeline experiences, injuries, splitting her time between San Clemente, Santa Barbara and Bells Beach, what’s next for her in her surf career, and her advice for young groms.

Professional surfer, fellow 805 charger, and brother to our host, Parker Coffin joins the Cold Beer Surf Club. Parker and Conner reminisce on what it was like growing up in the 805 and talk about the solid crew they came up with. They get into the details of charging the massive Cloudbreak swell this year, how lucky they felt to be part of the crew that went on the trip, and being content with the possibility of dying during this once-in-a-lifetime swell. They discuss life on and off the competitive tour, Volcom House memories, and reflect on the importance of respect and what it was like as a grom to learn from the epicenter of surfing in Hawaii. Sage discusses life post the Championship Tour, and re-falling in love with surfing as she finds the truest version of herself. She talks about being able to take a step back to focus on maintaining healthy habits and relationships, traveling with her husband, and where she wants to visit next. She and Conner reflect back on moments in the tour, sharing untold stories, and discuss which jobs they would take if they weren’t professional surfers. They connect over their mutual appreciation for their hometown and the life they were able to live as part of the tour, reflecting on the challenges, rewards, and opportunities along the way. Finally, Sage gives her advice to young, aspiring groms and reveals her top pick for the best chicken tenders in America.

The Cold Beer Surf Club welcomes in guest Chris Malloy, surfer, filmmaker, and one-third of one of surfing’s most notable families. Host Conner Coffin and Chris dive into some of the surf movies Chris has helped create over the years, including “September Sessions” and “Thicker Than Water,” which first inspired Conner, gave him the urge to travel, and truly captured the essence of surf culture. They look back through Chris’s career in surfing and dissect the things that most set him apart, how he carved his own path, and how he charged every heavy spot from the Pipeline and Waimea Bay to Mavericks and Mullaghmore. The two surfers also discuss the responsibility of teaching kids how to go through the world, fishing trips with family, how the Central Coast of California impacted them both, and advice for today’s young surfers.
