Today, we’re talking again about burnout and the CURE.
I had a fantastic conversation with burnout expert Rachelle Stone and Lori Smith a few weeks back. I had a sense then I should open up about my struggle with burnout and what I learned from it, but then I chickened out.
I went the safe route and did a couple of interviews with outstanding entrepreneurs. But then I was coaching a client about finding the courage to own their story and use it to help others. I realized it was time for me to do the same.
So here it goes!
Hi, I’m Betsy. I’m a recovering stressaholic. It’s been 30 minutes since my last email check. Okay, five minutes.
The truth is, I have struggled with burnout for years due to the challenges of running a business and raising kids as a single mom.
Recently, after a cross-country move and becoming an empty nester, I experienced another burnout at new levels. This burnout was more like soul burnout or spiritual fatigue that no trips to the spa, bubble baths, or even a new set of supplements would solve.
This experience forced me to take a hard look at my approach to balance and self-care. I realized that I had been neglecting my needs and boundaries around work, and I needed to make some changes in my life and business to prevent burnout from taking over again.
That's why I want to share my journey of recovery and reinvention! I will also share the practical tips and tools that have helped me bounce-back from burnout.
So, let's get started with the CURE method for burnout recovery!
[2:11] Compassion. The first step to curing burnout.
[04:07] How to know of you're burnedout or just busy and stressed.
[05:13] Understanding. The next step to get beyond symptoms and get to root causes.
[05:38] Categories that will help you understand your burnout.
[06:32] Identify the categories contributing to your burnout.
[09:09] Reimaging and reinventing your life and business.
[09:29] Why and how to do a start/stop/continue on your life and business. Learn where you really need to focus so you can get out of burnout.
[18:43] What is giving your energy and what is draining you? How can this change your life and business?
[19:17] Energy and capacity management.
[23:30] Why you need to focus on doing the things "only you can do" and let go of the rest.
I want to leave you with three actions you can take today to start your burnout recovery journey:
• First, take a break! Whether it's a five-minute breathing exercise or a day off, prioritize rest and self-care.
• Second, journal about your own burnout experience. What are the messages it's trying to tell you? What changes can you make to address the root causes?
• And finally, consider seeking support from a coach, therapist, or supportive community. Sometimes it takes a village to overcome burnout. And if your burnout is because you have work you have fallen out of love with or are just tired of growing your business alone, I’m here for you. Head to www.betsyjordyn.com/services to learn how I can empower you to create a business and life you love.
Remember, burnout is not something that happens because you’re lazy or can’t cope with stress. You can find your path toward recovery and reinvention with compassion, understanding, a willingness to reimagine, and vigilant energy management. Take care!

Want to know how to become a highly effective organizational consultant…the Disney way?
Today's guests are my treasured colleagues Harold Hill and Luis Marrero. The three of us worked together as internal consultants at Walt Disney World before starting our consulting and coaching businesses.
I'm not going to lie – this conversation was some of the most fun I have had on the podcast. I had a blast taking a trip down memory lane and deconstructing what it was about our experience as internal consultants at Disney that was so unique and powerful.
You'll hear Harold and Luis validate everything you have listened to me share. They talk about what we did at Disney that was so effective, especially our intentionality around our consulting approach with clients and capturing our best practices into an online program that inspired the eCourse I created called the Consultant's Toolbox.
If you want to learn more about the consulting approach we used at Disney and grow our practices, I got a holiday gift for you. I'm launching a brand-new masterclass that will show you how to make money and a difference as an organizational consultant.
If you're like me and use the holidays as a time for reflection and personal development, this masterclass will give you new ideas and structure, plus a chance to get my full Consultant's Toolbox program at $100 off standard prices. Go to www.betsyjordyn.com/consulting-masterclass and sign up now.
The other thing you'll love about my conversation with Harold and Luis is their journey into full-time business ownership. You'll hear how they have built businesses that use the best of who they are and, frankly, who they have always been. You're going to be inspired to see that the purpose, gifting, and passion inside of you truly are the best path to a business that is profitable and that you love.
We also discussed why consultants today are so needed – especially given all the challenges facing senior leaders in this season.
Ready for a behind-the-scenes peek into consulting the Disney way that you can apply and use to grow your organizational consulting effectiveness? Then let's do this!
This interview officially wraps up my organizational consulting 101 series on the podcast. If you want to learn more about how to make money and a difference as an organizational consultant, get your free access to my brand-new masterclass.

What are the top power skills that every organizational consultant ought to have?
Today, I want to connect more specifically with those building an organizational consulting or coaching practice not just because of the money but because they want to make a difference.
I'm sure you have personally lived through those 70-hour workweeks that took you from your hobbies and time with your family. And have experienced the crazy decisions in service of 90-day numbers that impacted your career opportunities.
And now that you have broken free of your golden handcuffs and escaped your 9-5, you want to make sure no one else experienced what you did. So, now you want to land work where you can influence change and create organizations that are equally committed to people and profits.
The big question is how do you establish your credibility, with the positioning to speak truth to power so they will listen?
Here's what many consultants and coaches try to do that won't work:
But the real solution is to cultivate the personal power skills of an organizational consultant that are highly learnable.
One thing I have learned over my almost 30-plus years of consulting – while there are executive unicorns who will share your idealistic visions of a balanced approach to leadership, like Mark Johnson (in episode 42) or former Disney COO Jim MacPhee (in episode 40), the majority won't.
You have to meet them at their point of departure and use your power skills that I'll be sharing in this episode to influence them in a better way.
Now, there's only so much I can share with you on a podcast about practically using these power skills and how everything else we have been chatting about in these organizational consulting series fits together.
For this reason, I'm super excited to tell you about my hot-off-the-presses new free masterclass, "How to Make Money and a Difference as an Organizational Consultant."
In this masterclass, I'll be sharing step-by-step the solution that empowers you to achieve your income AND impact goals as an organizational consultant. It's completely free, so definitely sign up now: www.betsyjordyn.com/consulting-masterclass
Now, onto the top 5 personal power skills of an organizational consultant…
[01:48] What consultant and coaches do to be seen as a strategic luncheon that doesn't work!
[04:55] Hear about the first power skill you need to see how the entire organization works together.
[09:18] Understand why understanding and accepting politics are essential, but not enough.
[14:52] Learn about proactive advocacy and why it's critical to the consulting or coaching process.
[25:41] Why you need to use an approach that uses your power skills to reduce pushback and create real change based around client goals.
[32:41] Recap of the highly learnable power skills every organizational consultant needs.
Stay tuned for next week, as I have a special treat for you. I'm bringing a few Disney colleagues onto the show, and we'll be chatting about our experiences with our OD consulting team and how they have taken the lessons in unique ways into their consulting practices.

Today, I'm sharing the top solutions that every consultant should know.
Do you have a goal of growing a high-impact, high-income consulting business? Do you want the control it will give you over your career, to make great use of your experience, and to make a difference?
Here's the problem – especially if you're brand new, you probably have a misconception of what a consultant does. And if you don't know what a consultant does, you don't know what to sell.
If you don't know what to sell, you avoid marketing like the plague and procrastinate on meeting someone who expresses interest in your services.
In this episode, we're going to turn this around.
I'll be going over my top five consulting solutions – what they are, why you need to know them, and how to get started.
I have shared some of my Disney background with you through this series. The short story is that after my masters in OD, I landed my dream job at Disney as an internal OD consultant. I had a leader who ran our internal department like we were an external consultancy and expected that we invest 20% of our time building up our mastery in the consulting best practices.
We did quarterly work sessions.
We did weekly practice sessions.
We created an intranet site called the OD workbench that contained all of these best practices we could access wherever we were on the property, which served as an inspiration for a program that I created that I called The Consultant's toolbox.
This is why marketing didn't scare me when I started my business, even though it was new to me. I was confident in what I'd do with a client once I got one.
I created a cheat sheet to give you the big picture of the consulting solutions you could be selling your clients. So head on over to www.betsyjordyn.com/solutions and grab yours.
[01:59] Hear how my Disney background influenced this episode.
[04:47] Go to www.betsyjordyn.com/solutions and grab your cheat sheet that details how you can create value for your corporate clients.
[05:16] Hear about how and why you ned to conduct an assessment with your clients.
[09:01] Understand how and why you need to create a strategy so you client has a game plan for winning.
[13:35] Learn more about org design and why it's a high value solution that very few consultants understand.
[16:38] Why leadership development isn't just about training!
[22:00] Hear why executive teams are unique, their challenges, and how to help.
[25:08] Tune in for the quick recap and learn how to understand which solution your client needs!

Today I'll discuss the positioning traps that hold consultants back from their impact and earning potential.
To set the context for what I mean by positioning traps – I need to take you back in time to 1997 when my mentor and professor told me – people don't get what you do and what you can offer as an organizational consultant. His feedback was impactful; I will share what he taught me to do and the powerful results!
I learned that if we want to be treated and paid as a strategic partner, we must position ourselves that way. Otherwise, we'll default into one of the positioning traps that will stand in the way of the difference we want to make and the income we want to earn.
This insight about taking charge of my positioning is a theme throughout my consulting and entrepreneurial career – including what I do now as a brand messaging and positioning strategist.
When I got to Disney, I was able to consult with the executives on the strategic projects I mentioned in the last episode because I positioned myself to do that work. I proactively advocated for the work approach I thought was best for my role.
This positioning perspective is behind my approach to landing work, which I call a Partnership Set Up. It is how I grew my business and helped my clients grow small requests into six-figure engagements.
And it's key from a marketing standpoint because the truth is the role of a strategic partner and executive advisor isn't on the org chart and shouldn't be, which I'll explain why in this episode.
Now, let's get into the positioning pitfalls.
[4:12] Check out the cheat sheet I made for this episode: www.betsyjordyn.com/consulting-approaches
[06:01] Hear why it's so easy to fall into the pair of hands trap and how it can make things worse for your clients.
[11:16] The impact the pair of hands trap has on your income.
[14:54] Why consultants fall into the surrogate leadership trap and its risks.
[21:28] Hear how great consultant positioning is somewhere in the middle of the pair of hands and surrogate leadership trap continuum.
[29:33] Listen to the recap!
Download my free cheat sheet to summarize what we discussed today and determine where your consulting approach falls on the pair of hands to surrogate leader continuum and, most importantly – where you want to be www.betsyjordyn.com/consulting-approaches.

Ready to take your place as a trusted advisor and strategic partner to the C-Suite?
Today, I am sharing my secrets to working with the C-Suite in this first episode of my new Organizational Consulting 101 Series.
More and more people want to leave corporate to start their own consulting or coaching businesses for so many reasons:
And out of all the businesses they could start, many choose to consult or coach because of the difference they want to make in the world.
So, to achieve these impact and income goals – they want to advise influential senior leaders in organizations.
Marketing and all things related to marketing and getting clients are the #1 pain point for new and seasoned consultants and coaches. And this is a pain point we're all aware of as we make the transition from employee to entrepreneur, but there's more involved with this marketing challenge than meets the eye.
A second challenge is the transition from leader to consultant or coach, which is a whole new job requiring very different skill sets and perspectives, which I'll share more about in this episode.
Before I hosted this business podcast and had my brand positioning, messaging, mentoring, and brand marketing agency, I was an internal organization development consultant at Walt Disney World.
Disney is where I got my start. I had the great fortune of landing this dream job when I was about to turn 30 years old, and I had the opportunity to work with and advise exceptional leaders on visible, strategic projects like the DAK brand relaunch and the Basics project.
When I left Disney to start my own business, I grew it quickly from $0-$300K within 18 months because I knew how to work with executives and their teams. I learned how to influence them and create results without positional authority. And I'll be sharing these fundamental principles in this episode.
In this episode, you'll hear:
Only personally powerful consultants and coaches can speak truth to power. Tune in for the secrets you need to succeed in the C-Suite.
[5:22] Hear about the quiz I created to help you determine if you're ready to be a consultant or executive advisor. Get it at: https://www.betsyjordyn.com/consulting-quiz
[6:00] Number one secret to consulting success and working with the C-Suite.
[09:35] Why consultants need to remember that the client is not the organization.
[14:34] Why the position for a consultant is never going to be on the org chart.
[18:41] Hear why organizations don't care whether you're a coach or a consultant.
[24:00] Learn the big reason you won't succeed in the C-Suite until you accept this key reality.
[34:51] Betsy recaps the five secrets to consulting excellence and why your role is important.

Have you ever gotten tongue tied when someone asks you what you do?
I know I have!
Today, I’m wrapping up my "Brand You" series by sharing tips and a script that gets people curious and excited about what you do.
"What do you do?" Is one of the first questions people ask, literally everywhere you go - networking events abound. And each time you go to the grocery store, meet neighbors, go to the kids' soccer match, attend holiday parties, it is a chance to meet clients or people who know your potential clients.
But, if you do not have an engaging answer to the question, you will lose people when you begin speaking. And you’ll leave opportunity on the table.
However, when you have a compelling “What Do You Do?” statement, people will immediately know why they want to work with you or refer you to friends or colleagues.
And you’ll instantly stand out among the crowd because the majority of consultants and coaches don’t do this well.
I have been a business owner for 15 years, studied modern marketing, and working with hundreds of clients on their business development, brand building, and marketing. I'ver heard it many times, when people get the blank stares, they feel like they need to work on their pitch.
There is a difference between a pitch and an engaging story of your business, and that is what we will talk about in this episode.
For consultants and coaches, traditional sales don’t work.
A pitch is about sales.
A story is about service.
I have a free PDF that goes along with today's episode. Check it out here: www.betsyjordyn.com/script.
