CORTIS are not like other K-pop crews. Yes they ultimately trained like idols, but the quintet spent years within Big Hit Music as songwriters/producers for others — they knew of each other before they were actually brought together as a group (more on that in their interview). They only just debuted with their first EP Color Outside the Lines this past September and the collection pops. Featuring a stellar collaboration with Teeezo Touchdown, their songs like ‘FaSHioN’ (inspired by a trip vintage shopping on Fairfax in LA) showcase a harder edge, a certain nod to heroes Brockhampton, Odd Future, and ASAP Mobb, while ‘JoyRide’ offers a melancholy, emo-tinged vibe (despite the title).
Most notably James, Juhoon, Martin, Seonghyeon, Keonho are humming with ideas, shooting and editing many of their own videos before blowing out the budget and heading to farflung places like the snowy mountains of New Zealand to make more MVs. By their own admission, they’re still teenagers (okay, James just turned 20), they want to have fun, eat good food, and go vintage shopping because full price designer threads aren’t exactly in budget. Songs about girls? Right now they’re not interested. We discuss all this and more on their first time on the couch. Definitely one of South Korea’s most exciting and authentic new groups.
