This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for Friday August 7th, 2020. The Governor of Ohio tested negative in a second COVID-19 test, hours after testing positive on Thursday. A model from The University of Washington predicts 300,000 U.S. fatalities from the virus by December. They did say that could be lowered by as much as 66,000 if 95% of people wore a mask in public. Hawaii will begin a 14-day quarantine on inter-island travel. The State Department lifted the international “do not travel” advisory. Though many countries have travel restrictions against those coming from the U.S.

Global cases passed 19 million. Norway will reinstate some social distancing restrictions after a rise in cases there. Hong Kong will offer all citizens universal coronavirus testing. The Australian Prime Minister said he believes whichever country finds a vaccine for COVID-19 must share it with the world “without restraint”.

This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for Thursday August 6th, 2020. Coronavirus Task Force Member Dr. Fauci, said the world may never be rid of COVID-19, but a vaccine and public health measures will keep it under control. President Trump is considering an executive order to reinstate the eviction moratorium, increase unemployment benefits and temporarily suspend the payroll tax as Congress has yet to reach an agreement on the next stimulus bill. Students and teachers in Indiana, Georgia, Mississippi and North Carolina are in quarantine after exposure to COVID-19 at the start of the school year. The Mayor of Los Angeles will cut off power and water to homes that continue to host large parties. 

Peru set a new daily case record, while France and Germany recorded their highest daily infection numbers since May. The Associated Press is reporting that North Korea has put thousands of people in to quarantine, despite insisting there have been no positive cases in the country. Melbourne, Australia has shut all non-essential businesses.  Belgium will be added to the list of countries, requiring quarantine upon entry to the UK. Spain and Luxembourg are already on the list.

This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for Wednesday August 5th, 2020. As a new school year begins, many states are making last minute changes. The Washington Post notes, in Georgia, the waitlist for online learning is sending many students back to in person classes. Mississippi has delayed the start of the school year and Ohio will require masks in schools. The Mayor of Jackson, Mississippi says he fears the state has “yet to see the worst” of the pandemic. In Florida, 52 hospitals are at ICU capacity, reports CNN. 6 states have entered a partnership to increase testing and reduce wait time in their states, according to The New York Times. Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Ohio and Virginia will purchase 3 million tests. Novavax released Phase I data, showing that their vaccine candidate is safe and that participants developed antibodies more than 4 times higher than average. 

Ukraine recorded a record number of daily cases. The Prime Minister of Kosovo tested positive for COVID-19. Bolivia canceled school for the remainder of 2020, the government said it’s because the majority of rural areas do not have internet access. Ireland has extended mask requirements and delayed reopening pubs to the end of August.

This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for Tuesday August 4th, 2020. President Trump said COVID-19 is “under control as much as you can control it” in an interview Monday night with Axios on HBO, in reference to the death toll, he said “It is what it is”. Negotiations continue on the latest coronavirus relief package. White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, said he was “not optimistic that there will be a solution in the very near term”. A corrections officer in Miami Dade County has died due to COVID-19. There are nearly 500 positive cases among inmates and employees of the Turner Gilford Knight Correctional Center. Protesters around the country are calling for science and health concerns to lead the conversation on reopening schools.  

The Secretary General of the UN called the coronavirus pandemic “the largest disruption of education ever” and that the world is facing a “generational catastrophe”. 340 passengers and crew are in isolation after a passenger tested positive for COVID-19 on board a cruise ship in the South Pacific. The Bahama’s will re-institute lockdown orders after a rise in cases and shortage of ICU beds. The Islands reopened to tourists in July.  French scientists are warning of a second wave of the virus in the fall. Reinforcing the need for social distancing, testing and isolation for those most at risk.

This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for Monday August 3rd, 2020. Coronavirus Task Force Member Dr. Birx told CNN, that the U.S. has entered a new phase with the virus becoming “extraordinarily widespread”. She recommended wearing a mask at home if you live with compromised individuals.  Nevada approved a plan to mail ballots to all registered voters for the November election. Eli Lilly will enter Phase III clinical trials for their antibody treatment. They will recruit 2400 residents and employees from long term care facilities for the trials. 

Melbourne, Australia declared “a state of disaster” with the Premier stating “Where you slept last night is where you’ll need to stay for the next six weeks”. They also implemented a curfew from 8PM to 5AM. Workers in England can be asked to return to the workplace if employers believe they are free of the virus. The UK has acquired millions of 90-minute coronavirus tests, the tests can also detect the flu. The Department of Health noted the tests will increase testing capacity and help quickly break the chain of transmission. Russia will launch a nationwide vaccination campaign in October. The vaccine has yet to complete clinical trials.

This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for Friday July 31st, 2020. The U.S. economy shrank 32.9% in the second quarter. The largest decrease on record. 1.4 million Americans filed for first time unemployment yesterday. The federal government signed a deal with Sanofi/GlaxoSmithKline for 2.1 billion dollars. To secure 100 million doses of their potential vaccine. Herman Cain died Thursday from complications of COVID-19, the well-known businessman and talk show host sought the Republican Presidential Nomination in 2012. A student in Indiana tested positive for the virus on the first day of in person classes, notes The Washington Post. A University of Washington model is now projecting more than 230,000 deaths due to the virus in the US by November. Researcher’s found blood plasma from virus survivors infused in to COVID-19 patients reduced the rate of death by 57%, reports CNN. 

Vietnam recorded their first COVID-19 related death as another new daily case record was set on Friday. Japan and Morocco also saw record daily new cases. New restrictions are in effect in Northern England, including a ban on any gathering at private homes. Hong Kong will postpone their election for a year, citing virus concerns.

This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for Thursday July 30th, 2020. Over 150,000 U.S. lives have been lost due to the virus. Representative Gohmert of Texas has tested positive for the virus. Masks are now required on the floor of The House. The Head of the Federal Reserve noted yesterday, “Social distancing measures and a fast reopening of the economy actually go together. They’re not in competition with each other”. Maryland has expanded their mask mandate. Anyone over age 5 must wear a mask inside public spaces and outdoors when social distancing is not possible. Johnson & Johnson began Phase I human trials today on their vaccine candidate. Earlier studies on monkeys showed one dose protected the animals against the virus. 

Global cases have crossed 17 million. Victoria, Australia had record new daily cases and deaths on Thursday. Japan saw another record day Wednesday with daily cases over 1,000 for the first time. The Vice President of Gambia tested positive for COVID-19. Italy extended their state of emergency to October 15th. Allowing the government additional resources to contain and stop the spread of the virus. The UK extended the isolation period for those with symptoms of COVID-19 from 7 to 10 days. The German economy shrunk by 10.1% in the second quarter, the largest decline since they began keeping records in the 70’s. Brazil will resume international flights and tourism in the country, despite rising case and fatality rates.

This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for Wednesday July 29th, 2020. The Director of the CDC admitted to ABC news, that the introduction of the virus from Europe, “happened before we realized what was happening”. “That’s where the large seeding came in the United States”. The American Federation of Teacher’s said that if teachers are forced to go back to unsafe classrooms, they may go on strike. Two newly released studies relay that COVID-19 could lead to heart problems even after even a patient has recovered from the virus. Coronavirus Task Force Member Dr. Birx, said Arizona, California, Florida and Texas “have shown significant improvement” after taking steps to reinforce social distancing. 

The Spokesperson for the WHO, has described COVID-19 as one big wave that is not influenced by seasonal trends.   Japan experienced a record number of daily cases Tuesday, with 981.  A new report relays more than half of those living in the slums of Mumbai, India may have contracted the virus, reports CNN. The Indian state West Bengal extends their lockdown through the end of August. The European Commission secured a 74-million-dollar deal with the makers of Remdesivir to treat an estimated 30,000 patients. The UK signed a deal for 60 million doses of Sanofi/GSK’s vaccine candidate.

This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for Tuesday July 28th, 2020. Senate Republicans debuted their 1 trillion-dollar coronavirus relief bill. The bill includes a second round of stimulus checks and reduces weekly emergency unemployment benefits by $400 a week. The bill will be debated in Congress prior to a vote. National Security Advisor O’Brien has tested positive for the virus. He is the highest ranking official to do so thus far. The head of the ICU at a Baltimore hospital has died due to COVID-19, relays The Washington Post. The Governor of Kentucky has closed bars for two weeks and reduced restaurant capacity. 

China recorded 68 cases yesterday, their highest number since early March. Belgium will reinstate social distancing restrictions, confirmed cases increased by 70% in July. Danang in Vietnam has re-entered lockdown after 15 cases were diagnosed there. The Venice Film Festival will take place in September, masks and temperature checks will be required and films will be screened outdoors.

This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for Monday July 27th, 2020. Florida passed New York and now has the second highest case count in the U.S. after California. Alaska, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Tennessee set new daily case records. Coronavirus Task Force Member Dr. Birx, encouraged states with rising case loads to close bars and limit the size of social gatherings. McDonald’s restaurants will require masks be worn at their over 14,000 locations. Senate Republicans are expected to unveil a one trillion-dollar coronavirus relief proposal. Moderna began Phase III clinical trials in the U.S. today for their vaccine candidate. 

Victoria, Australia had their highest number of new daily cases on Monday with 532. India also broke their daily record. Vietnam evacuated 80,000 tourists from Danang after 4 cases were reported. Vietnam had gone 100 days with no new cases. Hong Kong resumed strict social distancing guidelines including no gatherings of more than 2 people, no in restaurant dining and mandated masks. The United Kingdom will reinstate a two-week quarantine for anyone arriving from Spain.
