This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for Friday July 24th, 2020. The U.S. crossed 4 million cases, with Alabama, Hawaii, Indiana Missouri and New Mexico setting new daily records. 96 employees of a seafood processing plant in Alaska have tested positive for the virus. The plant says most did not have symptoms and none had been hospitalized. Washington State announced new restrictions on large gatherings, including weddings, funerals and restaurants. The Jacksonville, Florida portion of the Republican National Convention has been cancelled. The Governor of Arizona changed his policy and said schools would not have to reopen in Mid-August. This follows days of teacher protests. New guidelines released by the CDC favor reopening schools. 

Uganda reported their first COVID-19 related death. Mexico, Japan and India hit record new daily case numbers on Thursday. Cases in Southern Brazil have tripled in one month, according to CNN. South Africa has shutdown public schools for a month. China will loan 1 billion dollars to Latin America and The Caribbean for access to a COVID-19 vaccine when it arrives. Russia will resume some international flights August 1st.

We are approaching 4 million cases in the U.S., 915,000 of them were added in the last two weeks. CNN notes that is more than all of the cases reported in June. President Trump told Fox News; he thinks testing is “overrated” but he is willing for the country to keep doing it. California, Missouri, North Dakota and West Virginia reported record daily cases yesterday. California passed New York and now has the most COVID-19 cases in the U.S.  1.4 million Americans filed for first time unemployment last week. After postponing this spring, Major League Baseball celebrates Opening Day for an abridged season today.  

Global cases have crossed 15 million. Japan and Argentina reported record daily cases yesterday. A report written by the British Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee, relayed their disappointment in the government’s preparedness planning for a pandemic, noting, ““We are astonished by the government’s failure to consider in advance how it might deal with the economic impacts of a pandemic”. Victoria, Australia will pay people to stay home while they wait for COVID-19 test results. Dubai’s Emirates Airlines, will cover medical and quarantine costs for any passenger who tests positive for the virus during their travels.

This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for Wednesday July 22nd, 2020. More than 1,000 deaths due to the virus were reported in the U.S. yesterday, the highest since June 2nd.  In the first public Coronavirus Task Force briefing since April, President Trump said the COVID-19 outbreak will probably “get worse before it gets better”. He also encouraged Americans to wear a mask in public. Miami set up a mask enforcement unit within the police department.   An estimated 7 to 8 billion dollars allocated months ago for testing in the U.S. remains unspent, reports CNN. The federal government has signed a deal with Pfizer for 100 million doses of their vaccine candidate. 

Australia, Argentina, the Czech Republic and Hong Kong reported record daily cases. A new study relays that almost 25% of residents in the Indian capital of Delhi have had the virus, reports The Guardian. Zimbabwe has imposed a curfew and will reinstate measures to curb the spread of the virus. The President of Brazil continues to test positive for COVID-19, two weeks after his initial diagnosis. The banquet affiliated with the Nobel Prize Ceremony has been cancelled. After 4 months of lockdown, Nepal will begin loosening restrictions.

The Oxford University/AstraZeneca vaccine candidate released positive data on their early stage trials, noting that it has produced promising response in large early stage trials. They are currently in Phase III trials in the UK, Brazil & South Africa and will begin a U.S. trial soon. President Trump will resume the public Coronavirus Task Force briefings and he said wearing a mask is “patriotic”.  Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Montana, Nevada, North Dakota and Puerto Rico reported record hospitalizations due to the virus.  The largest teacher’s union in Florida, will sue the state over resuming in person classes. 

The European Union has set aside $859 billion for loans and grants to rescue member economies from the devastation caused by COVID-19. Health officials in Spain said their infection rate has tripled since restrictions were lifted. Mainland China will require proof of a negative test within 5 days prior to boarding a flight in to the country. The territory Delhi, India reported fewer than 1,000 cases in a 24-hour period for the first time in 6 weeks.

This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for Monday July 20th, 2020. Sunday saw new daily case records in Kentucky, Louisiana, Oregon and South Carolina. There are no adult ICU beds available in over 100 Florida hospitals. The Mayor of Los Angeles warned the city is “on the brink” of shutting down again. In an interview with Fox News on Sunday, President Trump said, “I’ll be right eventually.  You know I said, ‘it’s going to disappear’. I’ll say it again.”  Dangerously high temperatures predicted for Washington DC, have forced public testing sites to close there today. The Governor of Colorado told NBC News that “The national testing scene is a complete disgrace”. Over 100,000 in the U.S. have signed up to participate in vaccine trials.  

India recorded their largest daily increase in cases with 40, 425. The Bahama’s will ban flights and commercial cruises from the U.S. beginning Wednesday. Other visitors to the islands will need to show proof of a negative test within the last 10 days. Hong Kong will require masks inside all indoor public spaces and non-essential government employees are to work from home. The UK has secured an additional 90 million doses of potential COVID-19 vaccines by partnering with BioNtech/Pfizer and Valneva. This is in addition to their partnership with University of Oxford/AstraZeneca.

This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for Thursday July 16th, 2020. Alabama has mandated masks be worn, when social distancing is not possible. Montana will require them in counties with 4 or more cases. Walmart, Kohl’s and Kroger will require masks be worn in their stores nationwide. Oklahoma set a new daily case record Wednesday with 1,075 reported. The Governor of Oklahoma has tested positive for the virus, he is experiencing mild symptoms and will work from home. At least 136 service members stationed on a base in Okinawa, Japan have tested positive. It is one of the largest outbreaks in the military. Virginia will implement statewide workplace safety standards, including notifying all employees within 24 hours if a co-worker tests positive. The Governor of Connecticut has asked the National Guard to remain in the state through the end of the year to help with the pandemic. Pasadena California has cancelled the 2021 Rose Parade. New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art will reopen at the end of August. Two recent studies have found that blood type does not play a role in contracting the virus or the severity of a case. 

South Africa has passed 300,000 cases. In the Philippines, police accompanied by health care workers, have been given the authority to search homes for infected people. 8 World Leaders, including Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau, wrote an Op Ed in The Washington Post, calling for equal access across the world for a vaccine. Stating, “Where you live should not determine whether you live, and global solidarity is central to saving lives and protecting the economy”.

This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for Wednesday July 15th, 2020. The Director of the CDC said he believes “the fall and the winter of 2020 and 2021 are going to be the probably one of the most difficult times that we experienced in American public health”. He also said he feels like the virus could be “under control” within two months if everyone wore a mask. The New York Times reports that the Trump Administration has directed hospitals to bypass the CDC and send all coronavirus patient information to the Health and Human Services database in Washington. The move concerns public health officials, who fear the data may be “distorted for political gain”. The land border between Mexico and The U.S. will remain closed to non-essential travel through August 21st. The U.S./Canada border is expected to remain closed as well. The Mayor of Philadelphia will not allow large public events until the end of February 2021. Moderna will move to Phase III clinical trials with their vaccine candidate on July 27th, working with 30,000 people. Results from Phase III are expected in October. 

Caracas, Venezuela resumed full lockdown as of this morning. In Colombia, Bogota and Medellin will also resume city wide lockdowns. Tehran, Iran has reentered lockdown for at least a week. Tokyo, Japan returned to the highest threat level warning for Coronavirus, after new cases were over 300 for the past few days. Russia will lift a mandatory 2-week quarantine for arriving visitors, but they must take a COVID-19 test either 3 days prior to or after their arrival. Queen Elizabeth will Knight the 100-year-old war veteran who raised 40 million pounds for the National Health Service earlier this year. Tom Moore walked laps of his garden with his walker to raise the funds.

This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for Tuesday July 14th, 2020. The world added more than 1 million cases of COVID-19 in 5 days, from July 6th-10th relays CNN. The global number of cases is 13, 127,006.  The Director General of the WHO said there would be “no return to the old normal for the foreseeable future”. California shuts down indoor dining, movie theaters and bars. Oregon mandates masks and limits gatherings of more than 10. LA, San Diego and Atlanta keep school online for the start of the fall semester. Hawaii will continue a 2-week mandatory quarantine for visitors through September 1st. The Chicago marathon in October, has been cancelled as the U.S. reports 61,492 cases Monday. 

Bihar, in northern India, will institute a 2-week lockdown starting Thursday. It will affect about 125 million residents, reports The Guardian. Bangalore began a week long lockdown today, for its 13 million residents. Face masks will be mandatory in stores in the UK starting on July 24th. France will also mandate masks in enclosed public spaces in the next few weeks. The French Government has set aside nearly 9 billion dollars to give health care workers a raise.

This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for Monday July 13th, 2020. The World saw the largest number of COVID-19 cases reported on Sunday with 230,370. The U.S. contributed 57,789 with Florida bringing 15,299, a record for any state since the pandemic began. Florida does not have a public mask mandate. Louisiana announced a mask mandate effective today.   Florida and Louisiana are 2 of the 35 states up in case count week over week.  A U.S. Marine base in Okinawa, Japan is on virtual lockdown after nearly 100 cases were reported on base. According to research published in the Journal of Adolescent Health, 1 in 3 young adults is at risk for severe COVID-19. That risk increases if they have used cigarettes or e-cigarettes in the last 30 days. For the first time in 4 months, New York City reported no COVID-19 related deaths. 

India set a new record for daily cases with 28,701. There are more than 870,000 cases in India. Mexico has passed Italy with number of fatalities due to the virus. 35,006 Mexican residents have succumbed to COVID-19. Lockdown will resume in Manilla, effecting about 250,000 people.  South Africa reinstated a daily curfew from 9PM to 4AM, they have also banned alcohol sales.
