The World Health Organization noted there were 183,020 new cases reported on Sunday, the highest global daily number yet. The previous record was set on June 18th with 181,232. The numbers are driven by new cases throughout The America’s. New cases reported Sunday morning show Brazil adding 54,771 and the U.S. 36,617. There are 8,975,776 cases worldwide, more than 3.3 million of them come from 2 countries. The U.S. has 2,280,969 cases for over 331 million residents, Brazil 1,083,341 for over 212 million. There have been 468,724 deaths due to the virus worldwide, with the U.S. and Brazil owning more than 1/3 of them. Despite being ranked 3rd and 6th in population, these two countries have a much higher percentage of infection and death than others. China, the most populous country has 84,573 cases and 4,639 deaths for their over 1.4 billion residents and India 425,282 cases and 13,699 deaths for their over 1.3 billion residents.
23 states are reporting an increase in number of cases. On Saturday, President Trump indicated the rise in numbers was due to increased testing, then remarked he had told his staff to slow down testing. Health experts strongly disagree, noting that with more aggressive testing, the percent positive would decrease or at the very least remain steady. Officials in California are reexamining deaths due to unexplained respiratory failure or inflammatory conditions dating back to November of 2019 to see if they may have been virus related, reports The Los Angeles Times. California has passed New Jersey in number of confirmed cases. 37 U.S. Service Members on a base in Guam have tested positive.
Germany reported an upswing in cases, with more than 1300 tied to a meat packing plant. South Korea says it is enduring a second wave of COVID-19. If the numbers continue to increase, they will reinstate social distancing measures. Dubai will reopen July 7th, to tourists who test negative.
