This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for Monday June 29th, 2020.   Globally, Sunday saw another record day with 189,077 new cases reported. While the U.S. crossed 2.5 million, 25% of the world’s more than 10 million. Cities across Florida will close beaches over the 4th of July weekend as the state reported more than 8500 cases on Sunday. Vice President Pence, speaking in Dallas, encouraged all Americans to wear a mask to stop the spread of the virus. The Governor of California order bars to close in a number of counties, including Los Angeles. Texas and Florida also closed bars. New York State reported 5 COVID-19 related deaths on Sunday, their lowest since March 15th. Coronavirus Task Force Member Dr. Fauci, expressed concerns that a vaccine would likely not help the U.S. achieve herd immunity if people refuse to get it. 

More than 400,000 in a county southwest of Beijing, China, have re-entered lockdown after 18 cases were linked to a market. Australia reported 75 cases in Victoria, their largest increase since early April. Japan reported their largest one-day increase since May 25th.  Three Indian states will expand lockdown measures through July 31st. Iran’s President said this has been the toughest year in the country’s history.  A report from the United Kingdom warns that COVID-19 patients who were hospitalized in the ICU, may develop PTSD. In the Frankfort Germany airport, there is now a walk-in coronavirus testing center. Results are sent within hours of the test, helpful if you are entering a country that requires a recent negative test, reports The Guardian.

This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for Friday June 26th, 2020.   "Our best estimate right now is that for every case that’s reported, there actually are 10 other infections.” Those are the words of the head of the CDC who estimates there are more than 23 million cases of COVID-19 in the United States. He said social distancing is the “most powerful weapon” against the virus. It was another record setting day for cases in the U.S. with 39,327 reported. The Governor of Texas issued an executive order to suspend elective surgeries in 4 counties to allow for enough open hospital beds. He also paused the states continued reopening. Florida, Arizona and New Mexico also paused reopening plans. 

More than one million dead people received stimulus checks totaling nearly 1.4 billion dollars a government watchdog report revealed. Apple will temporarily close 14 stores in Florida and stores in Houston to guard against spreading the virus. The Chief Executive of Delta Airlines, said passengers refusing to wear a mask on board or follow other safety requirements, could be permanently banned. Connecticut officials said K-12 schools should plan to reopen in the fall. Massachusetts also plans to reopen.  Hospitalizations in New York dipped below 1,000 for the first time since March.

A meat packing plant in England reported 165 COVID-19 cases. Spain has at least 40 outbreaks, the largest in Aragon with 250 cases. Despite a rising case count, Egypt will reopen Saturday after a three-month lockdown.  158 staff members of the Guatemalan President have tested positive. The President has tested negative. The French government will begin a campaign to test over one million in the Paris region.

This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for Thursday June 25th, 2020.   The U.S. reported 38,173 new cases yesterday, the most since the pandemic began. The numbers were driven by large increases in Texas 6,584, Florida 5,511, California 4,850, Arizona 1,810, Georgia 1,713, North Carolina 1,437 and South Carolina 1,284. With the continued rise in infection, many Governor’s who had initially resisted harsher restrictions are now implementing them. Nevada will require a face mask in all public places where social distancing cannot be observed. Washington state has also made masks mandatory. Utah will require masks in state run buildings, including liquor stores and allow local governments to implement stricter measures. The Governor of Texas is encouraging residents to stay home and relayed the state is “looking at greater restrictions”. 

Over 1.4 million first time unemployment claims were filed last week. New York, New Jersey and Connecticut will require people arriving from states where the virus is on the rise, to quarantine for 14 days upon entry. The New York City Marathon, scheduled for November, has been canceled. Disneyland, in California, has indefinitely delayed their July 17th reopening. Hawaii will ease their mandatory 14-day quarantine starting August 1st, as long as visitors test negative for the virus within 72 hours of their arrival. 

A senior Afghan official relayed there is a suspected 60 to 90% infection rate among the Afghanistan security forces, reports The Washington Post. More than 100,000 residents of Victoria Australia will undergo testing, as health workers go door to door. Cases in Victoria make up the majority of the countries 270 active infections.   Canada will allow travel among the 4 Atlantic Provinces without quarantine, starting July 3rd.

This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for Wednesday June 24th, 2020.   Cases across the U.S. continue to rise. Seven states reported new record daily cases: Arizona, Arkansas, California, North Carolina, Texas, Tennessee and South Carolina. South Carolina has 26,513 confirmed cases and 673 deaths. They hit their record high on June 20th with 1,155.  Cases have declined slightly over the last few days, with 912 reported yesterday. The state has seen rapid growth through the month of June. Prior to May 29th, the state was rarely over 200 cases a day. Greenville County has been the hardest hit, with 3,827, with 2,269 of those cases reported since June 1st. Just yesterday, the Greenville city council voted to require masks to be worn in a number of businesses. Unlike other hotspots where growth can be traced to a major outbreak at a large facility like a prison, factory or nursing home, nothing like that has yet been found in Greenville.  

Testifying before a House Committee yesterday, Coronavirus Task Force Member Dr. Fauci, relayed his concerns about the continued surge of infection rate in the U.S. Also, that the country will be doing more testing and that he is cautiously optimistic that we will have a vaccine by the end of the year or early 2021. As cases skyrocket in Houston, adults have been admitted to Texas Children’s Hospital, reports The Washington Post. The Governor of Texas told Texans, the safest place for them was in their homes. Players and owners have come to an agreement and Major League Baseball will start a 60-game season at the end of July. 

The European Union is working through guidelines for borders to re-open July 1st. Countries that have or continue to struggle with severe virus outbreaks, including the U.S., may be barred from travel to Europe. Australia reported their first COVID-19 related death in a month. China announced that it has conducted more than 90 million tests since the pandemic began.

The FDA has issued a warning for hand sanitizers made by Eskbiochem SA, that contain a toxic chemical. Brand names for the sanitizer include: All Clean, Esk Biochem, CleanCare, Lavar 70, The Good Gel and Saniderm. The sanitizers contain methanol, that can be toxic when absorbed through the skin, or ingested.

Coronavirus Task Force Member, Dr. Fauci, will testify in front of Congress today, regarding the government’s response to COVID-19. President Trump signed an Executive Order Monday, suspending a number of temporary work Visas through the end of the year. Stating, the restrictions will ease the economic impact of the virus. Los Angeles International Airport will test the use of thermal cameras. Taking the temperature of those passing through the terminal entrance. 

The Executive Director of the WHO’s health emergencies program, stated that increased testing is not driving case growth throughout the world. Noting that hospital admissions and deaths are also rising. In India, people are being turned away from hospitals and dying in the streets and backs of ambulances.  As cases in the country continue to rise, reports The New York Times. Saudi Arabia announced the annual pilgrimage to Mecca will be limited to Saudi Pilgrims and those from countries inside the kingdom, in an effort to curb the spread of COVID-19. England will reopen restaurants, pubs, salons and museums on July 4th.

This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for Monday June 22nd, 2020.   The World Health Organization noted there were 183,020 new cases reported on Sunday, the highest global daily number yet. The previous record was set on June 18th with 181,232. The numbers are driven by new cases throughout The America’s. New cases reported Sunday morning show Brazil adding 54,771 and the U.S. 36,617. There are 8,975,776 cases worldwide, more than 3.3 million of them come from 2 countries. The U.S. has 2,280,969 cases for over 331 million residents, Brazil 1,083,341 for over 212 million. There have been 468,724 deaths due to the virus worldwide, with the U.S. and Brazil owning more than 1/3 of them. Despite being ranked 3rd and 6th in population, these two countries have a much higher percentage of infection and death than others. China, the most populous country has 84,573 cases and 4,639 deaths for their over 1.4 billion residents and India 425,282 cases and 13,699 deaths for their over 1.3 billion residents.

23 states are reporting an increase in number of cases. On Saturday, President Trump indicated the rise in numbers was due to increased testing, then remarked he had told his staff to slow down testing. Health experts strongly disagree, noting that with more aggressive testing, the percent positive would decrease or at the very least remain steady. Officials in California are reexamining deaths due to unexplained respiratory failure or inflammatory conditions dating back to November of 2019 to see if they may have been virus related, reports The Los Angeles Times. California has passed New Jersey in number of confirmed cases. 37 U.S. Service Members on a base in Guam have tested positive. 

Germany reported an upswing in cases, with more than 1300 tied to a meat packing plant. South Korea says it is enduring a second wave of COVID-19. If the numbers continue to increase, they will reinstate social distancing measures. Dubai will reopen July 7th, to tourists who test negative.

This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for Friday June 19th, 2020.   California has issued a statewide requirement that masks must be worn in indoor public spaces. The Sherriff of Orange County says he won’t enforce the mandate. In Nebraska, The Governor has threatened to withhold funding from communities that require masks in official buildings, reports The Washington Post. On Wednesday, American Airlines removed a passenger from a flight for refusal to wear a mask. The CDC and WHO both recommend masks, frequent hand washing and social distancing to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. In Springfield Missouri in late May, two hairstylists had symptoms of the virus, but continued to work for over a week and saw up to 140 clients. The stylists and the clients all wore masks. The stylists eventually tested positive, none of the 140 clients did. 

A report in the New England Journal of Medicine, suggests that blood type could play a role in the severity of the COVID-19 illness, with Type A blood more likely to have a severe reaction and Type O, less likely. More research will be conducted. The Director of the Harvard Global Health Institute warns that unless there are policy changes, the growing number cases in the U.S. could get much bigger, relays CNN. Mississippi reported 381 new cases yesterday, a number of which were tied to fraternity rush parties in Oxford. 

The Yemen Director of the International Rescue Committee, has raised an alarm about conditions in the country stating “We can't even say how many people have it, because Yemen's health system has effectively collapsed, and the country has extremely limited testing capacity”. Mexico reported its largest daily increase in cases with over 5,000. Citing a steady decrease in cases, The United Kingdom has lowered their COVID-19 alert from 4 to 3. Meaning the virus remains in general circulation.

This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for Thursday June 18th, 2020.   New modeling from PolicyLab, at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, shows Florida has the potential to become the next epicenter for COVID-19 in the U.S. According to The Washington Post, Researchers say the risk of widespread community transmission is “the worst it has ever been”. The Director of the division of infectious diseases at the University of Alabama, said the spike in Florida is concerning due to the state’s aging population and number of nursing homes and retirement communities. There are 82,711 confirmed cases and have been 3,017 deaths. Three of the highest daily case counts have been reported in the last 5 days. Transparency in data released by the state health department has been questioned.  In late April, the State Medical Examiner’s report noted a higher death rate than what the health department was releasing.  The health department, stopped the release of the Medical Examiners report. In May, the doctor who created and updated Florida’s official coronavirus dashboard, was fired for what she says was refusal to manipulate the data. 

The Governor of Arizona authorized local governments to require masks. Prior to this, local governments were not allowed to mandate anything more stringent than what the state dictated. New York City and Washington DC will enter Phase II of reopening on Monday. Over 1.5 million Americans filed for first time unemployment benefits last week. Treasury Secretary Mnuchin, said the Trump administration is “very seriously considering” another round of stimulus checks.  

Chile will reinstate some restrictions as cases spike after a backlog of 31,000 cases were discovered. The President of Honduras was hospitalized for pneumonia Wednesday night. Earlier in the day he reported he had tested positive, with mild symptoms.  The Eifel Tower in Paris will reopen next week….but the elevator won’t. Visitors who want to enjoy the view, will need to use the stairs.
