Coronavirus Task Force Member Dr. Fauci, says we are “still knee deep in the first wave” and “we never came back to baseline and now are surging back up”. There have been nearly 300,000 cases recorded in the first week of July. Arizona crossed 100,000 cases. Despite a rise in cases, Florida has mandated that schools reopen for in person classes in the Fall. A number of members of the California State Assembly tested positive for COVID-19. They have adjourned until further notice. The Mayor of Atlanta, her husband and one of her children have tested positive. Virginia reported zero virus related deaths yesterday for the first time in over 3 months.
New data released on the coronavirus small business relief funds shows that a considerable share of the money went to chains owned by large investment firms, reports The Washington Post. Maryland based Novavax, received a 1.6-billion-dollar contract as a part of “Operation Warp Speed” for development and for the U.S. to secure 100 million doses of the as yet unproven vaccine is in Phase I clinical trials. New Jersey based Regeneron, announced they will begin Phase 2/3 clinical trials for their vaccine described as a “double antibody cocktail” to both treat and prevent infection. The trials will work with nearly 150 sites in the U.S., Brazil, Chile and Mexico. Initial data is expected in late summer.
The entire city of Melbourne in Victoria, Australia is back under a 6-week lockdown, effecting nearly 5 million people. Previously, the lockdown only applied to specific neighborhoods and buildings. Iran has mandated face masks to be worn in public. Hong Kong will require airline crew members to take a COVID-19 test when they arrive. Vietnam's final COVID-19 ICU patient was released, the country has no recorded deaths from the virus.
