This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for Friday July 10th, 2020. Another record day for cases in the U.S. with 59,886 reported. Single day records set in: Alabama, Idaho, Missouri, Montana, Oregon and Texas. Mississippi’s Health Officer said “Mississippi hospitals cannot take care of Mississippi patients” in reference to the state’s lack of available ICU beds. Florida’s Miami/Dade County reported a 33.5% virus positivity rate Thursday, their goal is to stay under 10%.  Nevada will shut down bars in counties with rising cases. Las Vegas and Reno will be included. Kentucky will require face masks to be worn in public settings and indoor businesses when social distancing is not practical. New York City extended the ban on large public gatherings through the end of September. 

Hong Kong will close schools and reimpose social distancing, as officials are now concerned about a “third wave”. Italy is considering extending their “state of emergency” allowing the government to take certain restrictive measures to curb the spread of the virus. Victoria, Australia recorded 288 cases Thursday. The highest for any Australian state since the pandemic began. India and Mexico set new records for daily cases.

This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for Thursday July 9th, 2020. The U.S. has crossed the 3 million mark, with another record setting day of new cases. 59,453 were reported yesterday, according to the New York Times. Led by California with 11,694 and Texas with 9,979. Missouri, Tennessee, Texas, Utah and West Virginia all set single day records. More than 24 states have halted or rolled back reopening plans. PPE is once again in short supply. Coronavirus Task Force Member Dr. Fauci, told the Wall Street Journal, “Any state that is having a serious problem, that state should seriously look at shutting down”. In Missouri 82 campers and counselors have tested positive, the largest cluster attached to a summer camp. Cases in Tulsa, Oklahoma are on the rise. The city’s health director said they are “more than likely” connected to The President’s rally and protests of the rally that took place last month.   1.3 million workers filed first time unemployment claims last week. In Orlando, Florida, Disney World plans to move ahead with Saturday’s reopening. 

The Director General of The World Health Organization said yesterday that the true enemy isn’t the virus, “but the lack of leadership and solidarity at the global level”.  Tokyo, Japan reported their largest daily increase in cases today with 224. Dubai will give arriving passengers free COVID-19 tests at the airport with results within 6 to 24 hours, reports The Washington Post. Mainland China recorded their 9th consecutive day with new case numbers in the single digits.

This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for Wednesday July 8th, 2020. The U.S. is on the verge of 3 million COVID-19 cases, with 54,160 reported yesterday, according to the New York Times. California, Hawaii, Missouri, Montana, Oklahoma and Texas set new single day records.  Florida, Texas and Arizona continue to struggle with high hospitalizations and dwindling ICU beds. Despite the continued rise in cases, The President urged Governor’s to reopen schools in the fall, stating “We’re very much going to put pressure on governors and everybody else to open the schools, to get them open”. The National Education Association, National Parent Teacher Association and American Federation of Teachers issued a joint statement noting, “we could be putting students, their families and educators in danger”. Coronavirus Task Force Member Dr. Fauci, said he is strongly in favor of local mask mandates. A number of movie theater chains have filed a lawsuit against The Governor of New Jersey for not letting them reopen. 

The Trump Administration gave formal notice of withdrawal from World Health Organization, with complete separation in July of 2021. After months of downplaying the virus, The President of Brazil has tested positive for COVID-19. Protesters in Serbia surrounded the Parliament building to protest new lockdown measures. The World Health Organization acknowledged emerging evidence of airborne transmission of COVID-19.

This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for Tuesday July 7th, 2020. Coronavirus Task Force Member Dr. Fauci, says we are “still knee deep in the first wave” and “we never came back to baseline and now are surging back up”. There have been nearly 300,000 cases recorded in the first week of July. Arizona crossed 100,000 cases.   Despite a rise in cases, Florida has mandated that schools reopen for in person classes in the Fall. A number of members of the California State Assembly tested positive for COVID-19. They have adjourned until further notice. The Mayor of Atlanta, her husband and one of her children have tested positive. Virginia reported zero virus related deaths yesterday for the first time in over 3 months. 

New data released on the coronavirus small business relief funds shows that a considerable share of the money went to chains owned by large investment firms, reports The Washington Post. Maryland based Novavax, received a 1.6-billion-dollar contract as a part of “Operation Warp Speed” for development and for the U.S. to secure 100 million doses of the as yet unproven vaccine is in Phase I clinical trials. New Jersey based Regeneron, announced they will begin Phase 2/3 clinical trials for their vaccine described as a “double antibody cocktail” to both treat and prevent infection. The trials will work with nearly 150 sites in the U.S., Brazil, Chile and Mexico. Initial data is expected in late summer. 

The entire city of Melbourne in Victoria, Australia is back under a 6-week lockdown, effecting nearly 5 million people. Previously, the lockdown only applied to specific neighborhoods and buildings. Iran has mandated face masks to be worn in public.  Hong Kong will require airline crew members to take a COVID-19 test when they arrive. Vietnam's final COVID-19 ICU patient was released, the country has no recorded deaths from the virus.

This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for Monday July 6th, 2020. California recorded the largest one-day total yet in the U.S. with 11,786 new cases reported Sunday. Arizona, California, Nevada, South Carolina and Texas reported a record number of hospitalizations due to COVID-19. The Mayor of Austin, Texas told CNN, “If we don’t change this trajectory, then I am within two weeks of having our hospitals overrun”. The Mayor of Houston also noted the hospital system there was close to being overwhelmed. For the third time in a week, Florida reported more than 10,000 cases on Sunday. The Mayor of Phoenix, said her request to set up community-based testing was rejected.  112 students living in a fraternity house at the University of Washington have tested positive for the virus. The school has set up a pop-up testing site. 

Scientists from around the world are urging the World Health Organization to address airborne transmission of the virus, reports The Washington Post. India has recorded more cases than Russia and now has the third highest total in the world, behind the U.S. and Brazil. Around 270,000 in northeast and northwest Spain will re-enter lockdown. Australia will close the border between New South Wales and Victoria. Over 3,000 people in nine public housing complexes in Melbourne, Victoria have been placed under strict lockdown for 5 days.  The Louvre in Paris opened today after four months.

This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for Friday July 3rd, 2020. 55,595 another record-breaking day for new cases in the United States. Florida crossed over 10,000 new cases, setting another daily record. Miami/Dade County announced a curfew from 10PM to sunrise until further notice. The Governor of Texas mandated face coverings for any county that has more than 20 active cases, as numbers there continue to rise. Pennsylvania will require those coming in from hot spot states to quarantine for 14 days, as will the city of Chicago, reports The Washington Post. Puerto Rico will require visitors to provide a negative COVID-19 test result within 72 hours of arrival, beginning July 15th. The Mayor of New York City said school’s there will reopen in the fall. The FDA has granted emergency use authorization for a test that can diagnose both the flu and COVID-19. 

Three of the countries with the highest case counts and deaths, the U.S., Brazil and India, never properly shutdown or began reopening too soon, reports CNN. The President of Honduras was released from the hospital yesterday. He was in for almost two weeks due to the virus. Pubs in Britain will reopen Saturday, the Prime Minister has cautioned patrons not to “overdo it”. Like other newly re-opened business in the UK, they will need to keep a 21-day record of customers reports The New York Times.

This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for Thursday July 2nd, 2020. Another record setting day for new COVID-19 cases in the U.S. as 49,932 were reported, notes The New York Times. Arizona, California, Georgia, North Carolina and Texas also had record days. More than 800,000 cases were reported in the U.S. in the month of June. ICU’s in Arizona are nearing 90% capacity according to The Washington Post. Vice President Pence visited the state yesterday and said the government would send 500 medical workers to help with the onslaught of patients. California will shutdown indoor dining, movie theaters and other indoor operations in 19 counties. New York City will postpone the reopening of indoor dining. At least 23 states have put a hold on reopening plans. 

Oklahoma voted to expand Medicaid, making about 250,000 additional residents eligible for public insurance. Including those who lost coverage when they lost their job due to COVID-19 layoffs. The FDA Commissioner told ABC News, "We are on target to reach a vaccine by year's end or early next year”. US based Pfizer and German based BioNTech published data yesterday that Phase I trials of their vaccine candidate have proven safe and produce a higher immune response in subjects than patients that have recovered from the virus. Pending approval, they will move to Phase III with 30,000 subjects by the end of July. 

Israel and Palestine have recorded record levels of cases this week. Lockdowns have been reinstated in areas with high case counts. Mexico reported 741 deaths yesterday, bringing their total to 28,510 lives lost to the virus. They pass Spain and now have the 6th highest number of COVID-19 related fatalities in the world. The UK has lifted a travel ban on more than 90 countries starting Monday. Residents will no longer need to quarantine for 14 days upon return.

This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for Wednesday July 1st, 2020.   Coronavirus Task Force Member Dr. Fauci, told a Senate Committee, that the country is going in the wrong direction with the fight against coronavirus. And if things don’t change, we could see 100,000 cases a day. New records were set in Alaska, Arizona, Idaho, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Texas.   New cases in the U.S. rose 80% in the last 2 weeks, according to The New York Times.   Colorado joined Texas, Florida and Arizona in closing bars. Virginia has delayed the reopening of bars there. The Senate agreed to extend the Paycheck Protection Program for small businesses. It will now move to The House. Goldman Sachs said a nationwide mask mandate, would help the country avoid further shutdowns and could prevent an almost 5% drop in GDP. 

300,000 in the suburbs of Melbourne, Australia re-entered lock down. 370 active cases have been reported in the area. The EU will open borders to travelers from 14 countries that are deemed to have COVID-19 under control. The US, Brazil and Russia have not met the criteria. The UN Security Council is expected to adopt a resolution for all countries to “adopt a halt in hostilities to focus on COVID-19” reports CNN.

This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for Tuesday June 30th, 2020.  

"We all want this to be over. We all want to get on with our lives. But the hard reality is this is not even close to being over," noted the head of the World Health Organization yesterday, he continued "Although many countries have made some progress, globally the pandemic is actually speeding up”. There are 10, 415,035 global cases and the world has seen 509,474 deaths due to COVID-19. Growth continues across the U.S., with Florida, Texas and Arizona especially hard hit. Sixteen states have paused reopening plans. Oregon and Kansas have made face masks mandatory indoors when social distancing is not an option. Over 1,000 inmates in California’s San Quentin prison have tested positive for the virus. Five times higher than last week. Coronavirus Task Force Member, Dr. Birx, said she would like to work with mayors and governors to use some new testing techniques and test large populations at the community level. Dr’s Fauci, Redfield and others will testify in front of the Senate’s health and education committee today. 

Victoria, Australia will reinstate lockdowns in 10 Melbourne suburbs. Leicester, England has seen a surge in cases and will remain under restrictions as the rest of the country eases the lockdown.  The WHO is sending a team to China to investigate the origins of the virus.
