For this week's case, Gretchen takes us to the Lonestar state and focuses on the small town of Bryan, TX. Our story centers on elderly neighbors Geraldine Lloyd and Etta Jean Westbrook. These ladies were widows and friends who lived on the same street together in 2007.
Etta Jean was a loving woman who spent her time making pottery and being active in her church. Geraldine was focused on looking after her daughter, Kelly Sifuentez, and her grandchildren after Kelly’s marriage fell apart. Kelly spiraled and engaged in many reckless behaviors, including drug and alcohol issues. Worst of all, she engaged in a romantic relationship with 14-year-old Christian Olsen. Kelly and Christian dated for years until Christian was finally 18. It was at this point that tragedy would come to the town of Bryan, TX.
“So obviously, Kelly, with the drugs and the statutory raping, is not a good choice maker.” - Gretchen (20:35)
After a windstorm, police went through the neighborhood, checking on everyone. This is when Etta Jean was discovered dead. After an autopsy, it is discovered she was murdered, so police begin a homicide investigation. Etta Jean’s credit cards were stolen, and the now 18-year old Christian Olsen has them. After interrogating Christian, police search Geraldine’s home where Kelly and Christian are living. Tragedy strikes again as Geraldine’s body is discovered in the backyard, and she has been dead for months. Now, police have a double homicide on their hands, and all fingers point to Christian and Kelly.
“They went back to Kelly, and basically, she just pinned it all on Christian.
She said she was asleep when it happened, and she didn't turn him in because she was afraid she would go to prison as well.” - Gretchen (34:44)
