On episode 10, our guest  Ndifreke Andrew-Essien (Freky), has over twelve years of experience in civic leadership, volunteering and working in communities in different program related areas in the not-for-profit sector. She also founded Freky Andrew-Essien Care Foundation well known as FAECARE Foundation a Non-Profit Organization with focus of work with vulnerable groups in communities.

Freky was a 4th year Medical Student at the Department of Medicine and Surgery, University of Calabar, Nigeria on the day her life took an unexpected turn. At age 22, she was involved in an accident which resulted in a spinal cord injury leading to her no longer being able to walk. 

On today's show, Freky takes us on a journey of her life. From the immediate aftermath as a young adult whose life changed forever very suddenly, to the adjustments she’s had to make over time to be living with a disability as an adult. She shares the many challenges and victories that have occured in between, including the daily battles she faces in a society that is not the most inclusive for people living like herself and the doggedness it has taken for her to become a success who is living as the highest expression of herself. 

Freky has gone on to achieve multiple degrees, including BSc and Masters in Human Physiology and Public Health as well as various other trainings and certifications.

Freky has volunteered and worked with international and local organisations and participated in President Barack Obama’s Flagship and Inaugural Young African Leaders Initiative. Freky is a Mandela Washington Fellow, a certified management consultant, a disability advocate, a John Maxwell Team member, as well as a speaker amongst many other things.

TRIGGER WARNING: Domestic Violence, Physical and Sexual Abuse.

Today’s podcast sheds light on an issue which impacts more women across the world than a lot of people realise. We are talking domestic violence and sadly there has been a steep rise, in cases across the world.

It is a growing crisis, which is further exacerbated  by beliefs and cultural norms in large parts of African. In Nigeria where I grew up, a staggering 23% of women have been victims of physical or sexual violence committed by spouse and due to how scared wedding vows are held, women are encouraged to stay in such relationships even at risk of their own lives.

So how does a woman fare in a society where her marital status may mean more than her very own life? 

My guest today is a brave and courageous survivor who will be sharing her story to enlighten and educate us. Ivie is a mother of 3 beautiful daughters and shares her harrowing experience of domestic abuse at the hands of her ex-husband whom she was married to for 7 years. 

We discuss what it was like for her whilst married and crucially what life has been for her since her separation in a society that often stigmatises women who leave their marriages. 

Ivie has overcome significant adversity and  is a brave and courageous  warrior who embodies what being Unscathed means.

On Episode 6, I stay true to my heart and have a candid conversation about recent happenings in my home country Nigeria. 

At the time of this recording, I had just seen live footage of the Nigerian Army opening live ammunition against unarmed protesters involved in the #EndSars campaign. 

In an episode filled with unfettered emotions, I am joined by a guest, Doubra Fumudoh, my brother and we discuss the ongoing #EndSars campaign. We talk about the plight of the Nigerian youth and why it feels like they have been stretched to the limit. Doubra, like many other Nigerians has also been at the receiving end of Police brutality and shares his experience which is also the reality of so many others in Nigeria. 

With millions of Nigerians globally taking to the streets for more than two weeks to protest for police reforms and an end to police brutality, I share why your voice is also needed in this movement and what you can do to help amplify our cry for justice and freedom from indiscriminate brutalisation and killing of so many young people in a country that where its citizens are already paying a heavy price for decades of corrupt leadership and mismanagement of national resources. 

They say evil prevails when good men do nothing. The #endsars movement is a movement, but a movement in support of millions of citizens maintaining the most fundamental of human rights - the right to live and not be killed.

On Episode 5, our guest  Sandra Nwachukwu, a UK-based Chartered Surveyor, is speaking on her life’s journey through overcoming adversity linked with her University education. Sandra’s life took an unexpected turn after attending University in Nigeria for 4 years but on completion was told that she could not be awarded a degree due to an admission error she had no knowledge of. On this episode, Sandra shares very openly about the loss of identity and sense of purpose that can come when your best laid plans are rocked without any warning. Sandra knows very well the pain of stolen time; and explains what it did to her and how through grace she managed to overcome and reclaim the years that had been taken from her unjustly.  Sandra’s life can be condensed into a powerful story of sheer grit and determination and what it takes to bounceback and thrive after facing incredible disappointment.
