Happy Tuesday, pals.
We start off this week with a chat about the earthquake and riots that took over Melbourne last week! Who would’ve thought that 2021 could get any weirder??
Then some pop culture popcorn: the Internet’s strangest pairing, Grimes and Elon Musk, have “semi-separated” after three years and Chris Pratt is cast as Mario in the new Super Mario Bros movie. It sparks a discussion around our pop culture “hate-boners”.
You’ve probably heard about the tragic case of Gabby Petito over the last few weeks. Gabby was a 22 year old micro-influencer who went missing while on a trip with her fiance Brian Laundrie.
Earlier this month, Brian returned home in their van… alone. Now, Gabby’s body has been found in a national park and Brian has also been reported missing.
In this segment, we go over a brief timeline of the case and discuss a few topics that it’s brought up including: the proliferation of social media in missing person cases, why our true crime obsession may be harming people and Missing White Woman syndrome.
We reference this New York Times article as well as this piece from The Cut and an article on online detectives by Vanity Fair.
Next up it’s recommendation time. Maggie escapes in a fantasy novel by V.E. Schwab called The Invisible Life Of Addie LaRue while Jas recommends a podcast called The Dropout which looks at the rise and fall of fraudster Elizabeth Holmes.
Ta-ta for now.

Hi friends!
Welcome back to another ep of Culture Club.
We jump right into it this week discussing our thoughts on Sex Education and our King Lil Nas X’ new album. There’s also an update on last week’s story about the reality series The Activist. We read from judge Julianne Hough’s Instagram apology.
The biggest night in fashion, the Met Gala took place last week. We chat about the behind-the-scenes GRWM videos and the appeal of BTS film photos.
Activist slogans were front and centre on the red carpet. We break down if Cara Delevigne’s ‘Peg the Patriarchy’ vest was giving what it was supposed to give and whether or not AOC’s ‘Tax the Rich’ dress was performative. We read from Luna Matatas’ Instagram post about her copyrighted phrase ‘Peg the Patriarchy’.
Last week, Mac Miller’s estate re-released a single off his 2014 mixtape ‘Faces’. Three years after his untimely death of an accidental drug overdose, it seems fans are still lapping up his music.
This sparked a discussion into whether posthumous album releases are ethical. We reference Tupac Shakur’s haunting 2012 Coachella hologram and the exploitation of Amy Winehouse (even after her death).
In this segment, we read from a 2012 MTV article by James Montgomery titled ‘Tupac’s Coachella Hologram and the Rise of the Not-So Live Revue’ and ‘When I’m Gone: Is it Ethical to Release Music by Deceased Artists?’ by Dean Van Nguyen for The Face magazine.
Maggie recommends a comedy murder mystery series starring Selena Gomez called ‘Only Murders in the Building’ available on Disney+ while Jas recommends a podcast called ‘9/12’. It’s an audio documentary on how 9/11 the day became 9/11 the idea.
Katie Zhou created our fab cover art and India Raine is our wonderful producer and composer of our jingle. Email us at [email protected], find us on Instagram @cultureclubpod, or on our personal accounts @jasmineeskye and @yemagz.

Hi pals,
We’re back with a one-on-one chat after our guest ep last week!
First up, some pop culture pregnancy popcorn. The youngest Kar-Jenner announces her second baby and we dive into all the tea from the John Mulaney/ Olivia Munn news. Why do we care so much about celebrity relationships?
Two musicians released album covers featuring pregnancy. Lil Nas X has been marketing his forthcoming album ‘Montero’ with a prosthetic bump while Drake used the pregnant emojis on his album ‘Certified Lover Boy’.
We ask if they’re using pregnancy as a gimmick and why it’s bad timing. It’s also important to note though, that white influencer James Charles used this stunt as well - was the same energy given then?
Next up, American production company CBS announced their new reality game show ‘The Activist’ this week. The dystopian Hunger Games-esque show will see activists paired with either Usher, Priyanka Chopra-Jones or Julianne Hough to battle it out before reaching the grand final of speaking in front of world leaders at the G20 Summit.
We read from activist Clover Hogan’s twitter thread on the behind the scenes experience, this i-D magazine article by Douglas Greenwood and we also reference this Guardian article by Arwa Mahdawi titled ‘The rise of performative activism has reached reality TV - but it’s not all bad’.
We have two recs each this week. Jas recommends ‘The Panic Years’ by After Work Drinks & ‘The Trap’ by The Victorian Women’s Trust.
Maggie recommends the ‘Everybody Knows’ podcast by Schwartz Media and Pete Davidson’s film ‘The King of Staten Island’.
Phew! Chat next week honeys.

In this episode of Culture Club Chats, we sit down with Kath Ebbs. As a teen, Kath worked with independent youth-run agency, Culture Machine and owned The Smoothie Bowl Shack at Glebe markets in Sydney.
Nowadays, Kath is a social media influencer creating conversations around gender, sexuality, fitness and the health industry.
In this open and vulnerable episode, Kath chats about the impact of growing up online, how they came to embrace their queerness and the toxic world of the anti-vax wellness space.
And a quick content warning: Kath chats about their experience with eating disorders during this ep. If you find this triggering then don’t be afraid to get help. The Butterfly Foundation is a great place to start.
You can find Kath on Instagram @kathebbs.

Happy Tuesday!
We start off today with some bite-sized pop culture news: Zoe Kravitz and Channing Tatum are an item, and New Zealand queen, Lorde has released a new album. We share our thoughts and read from Julian Rizzo-Smith's article, A 3-Min Explainer On Why People Are So Critical Of Lorde’s Solar Power Album for PedestrianTV. Grimes is also defending her billionaire boyfriend... again.
Speaking of boyfriends, according to iD magazine, offline normcore boyfriends are so hot right now. We reference this TikTok and article by Laura Pitcher.
Next up, mega fast fashion retailer, Shein is dropping a new Project Runway-style show to give one fashion designer the prize of $100K and a chance to design a capsule collection. We ask why some big names in fashion decided to attach themselves to this project (and controversial company) and the fact that no matter how ‘philanthropic’ the motives, these fashion celebs supporting this faster-than-fast fashion will always be unethical.
We also discuss the big news of last week that OnlyFans is banning sexually explicit content from its site. What does this mean for one of the most popular subscription sites on the internet? A few articles we reference from include the BBC, Axios, Bloomberg, ABC and Zee Feed.
Two TV recs coming in hot: Jas recommends Nine Perfect Strangers, a new drama series starring Nicole Kidman on Amazon Prime while Maggie recommends a more emotional series with Modern Love season two (also on Amazon Prime lol).
Katie Zhou created our fab new cover art and India Raine is our wonderful producer and composer of our jingle. Email us at [email protected], find us on Instagram @cultureclubpod, or on our personal accounts @jasmineeskye and @yemagz.
That’s all for this week, folks. Thanks for joining us.

Hello fellow kids,
We begin this already cursed week with a little personal catch up as well as a chat about celebrity merch after Olivia Rodrigo’s team leaves fans in a brutal mood.
Maggie penned a personal piece for R29 Australia this week titled Am I Queer Enough To Call Myself Bi? She reads a little bit out for us and we reference our February episode that you can listen to here.
The Wall Street Journal released a new report on TikTok recently stating that the bots have figured out the main algorithm key is your watch time. This leads us into a discussion around our algorithms and how TikTok is just Tumblr 2.0. We reference this article by Charli Clement for VICE titled TikTok’s LGBTQ+ Discourse is Just a Re-Run of Tumblr.
We only JUST spoke about eco-anxiety but maybe we should've waited because this week it’s been off the charts. The IPCC report into climate change has made many of us reconsider what the future will look like and if we want to bring kids into this mess. One piece we both resonated with was Elfy Scott’s article for PedestrianTV titled Climate Change Is Making Young Aussies Rethink Having Kids, But Do Our Leaders Even Give A Shit? Elfy kindly reads out some of her words and you can follow the talented writer here on Instagram and Twitter.
We also post this heartwarming TikTok by user @joshuaturek.
This week, Maggie goes full fantasy with The Mysterious Benedict Society on Disney+ while Jas recommends a report from Triple J’s Hack called On TikTok, lies and misinformation run wild that you can listen to here.

Welcome back, pals!
The Olympics are over for another four years so we leave them with a wholesome chat about Tom Daley and Jasmine’s new hobby.
Actor Matt Damon stated in an interview with the Sunday Times that he’s recently retired the f-slur after receiving a long letter from his teenage daughter.
Between the Prime Minister empathising with Brittany Higgins only after speaking with his wife about their daughters and this Hollywood A-lister LOUDLY airing his homophobia, we discuss the ‘daughter effect’ that seems to be plaguing men in positions of power.
We recite research from this article and read from a piece for MSNBC by Liz Plank titled Matt Damon and the Twisted Cultrual Norm of the ‘Daughter Effect’.
Literal legend Rihanna, (queen of pop music, lingerie and beauty) has officially entered the Billionaire’s Club. We debate our feelings around this and reference some pieces including Tayo Bero’s piece for Refinery29 titled Rihanna is the Only Billionaire Allowed to Exist and Akin Olla’s piece for the Guardian Sorry, Rihanna. I Can’t Celebrate Billionaires - Even if They are Black.
For our recommendations, Maggie read this truly unhinged celebrity chef profile by Tim Elliott for The Age while Jas recommends She Is Haunted. A moving debut book of short stories by Australian Chinese writer, Paige Clark.

Hi friends,
Let’s get existential.
Billie Eilish has dropped a new album but people on the Internet are being cruel (*insert Leave Billie Alone meme*). One of her songs has stuck out to us and leads us into a conversation around work fulfillment and optimising ourselves as brands.
Jas references her article for Fashion Journal titled ‘Why The That Girl TikTok Trend Is More Sinister Than It Seems’ and we read from Laura Pitcher’s article for iD titled ‘Girl Boss culture Isn’t Dead It’s Rebranded As “That Girl” Now’.
You’ll hear this TikTok as well as a snippet of Flex Mami from A1: The Show podcast.
American rapper DaBaby made homophobic remarks on stage in Miami this week proving that decades later stigma around the HIV/ Aids crisis has been passed down through generations.
Finally, we have two stellar recommendations, both critiquing capitalism. Isabelle Truman reads from her piece Eat The Rich? It’ll Cost You – How Anti-Capitalism Has Been Sold Back To Us for the newly launched Refinery29 Australia while Genevive Phelan reads us a snippet from her article, Why I Don’t Think There’s Such A Thing As A Dream Job Anymore for Fashion Journal.
Thanks again to Celebration Nation, a hilarious Aussie web series about the woes, friendships and mess of retail life. Watch it for free on Youtube here.
