David Alan Grier joins Kyle Meredith to talk about his work in the latest film version of The Color Purple, as well as working alongside Eddie Murphy for the first time in 30 years in the recently released Candy Cane Lane. The comedy and drama legend tells us how, early on, he based the rhythm of his career off of what he saw Michael Keaton doing in the 80s, what it was like getting to play Santa Claus in the Prime Video film, and the uncomfortable clock costume he wore in the live-on-stage version of Beauty & The Beast. Grier then digs into his role in The Color Purple, a story he had auditioned twice for in the past for the original 1985 film as well as the Broadway version. Grier discusses portraying Shug’s dad, the Rev. Samuel Avery, and what it's like to record the music before acting the role. We also get to hear about joining the cast of A Soldier’s Play for the 3rd time and his next movie, The American Society of Magical Negroes.
