Why should more people, especially men, consider social work right now?

On this episode of Diversified Game, Kellen Coleman, M.A. sits down with social work educator and field education leader Katrina Boone for a powerful conversation about careers, internships, private practice, AI, ethics, community service, financial literacy, and what it really takes to become effective in the profession.

Boone explains why social work is much broader than therapy. Social workers can work in clinical practice, case management, policy, leadership, forensic social work, community organizations, and macro practice. She also explains why the profession needs more men, including Black and Hispanic men.

The conversation gets practical. What separates a student who simply completes field hours from one who maximizes the experience? Why do ambitious interns need to slow down and focus? Should social work students bill for services? And how much experience should someone get before opening a private practice?

Boone also addresses AI. Her position is clear: AI is here, so social workers need to learn how to use it effectively and ethically, with guidelines and guardrails. It should be an aid, not the final product.

The episode closes with lessons on financial literacy, community service, empathy, and one of the most important principles in helping professions: it is not only what we say, it is how we say it.
