Welcome back my friends, it’s July 27th and this is another episode of the DO BIG THINGS podcast. I’ve got a great conversation coming up for you guys this week. I talk with my man, Terry Miller who just completed the Hardrock 100. I really enjoyed listening to his story. He has been trying to get into Hardrock 100 for about ten years now. Anyone who has entered the Hardrock lottery before, knows how difficult it can be. Not to mention running year after year of qualifiers just for the chance that you might be picked one year. Well this year, Terry was picked to run his first Hardrock 100. It was everything he hoped for. He was challenged, he had to dig deep and he finished the race. He finished DFL. But he finished, nonetheless. He may not be fast, he may not be elite. But he had a dream to run Hardrock and when he got his opportunity, he didn’t waste it. He got his money’s worth. Afterall, DFL in one race is called Last Man Standing in another race. Terry, congratulations. You had a dream, you saw it through and now, you are a Hardrock finisher.

Need I say more? She not only won, but she nearly ran it faster than any woman ever has in a blazing 17 hrs and 10 minutes. Wow. All I can say is wow. I’ve been lucky enough to run this race and I did it on a really hot year. I know firsthand how tough that course is and I barely squeaked in under 24 hours. Beth, you are a maniac and I mean that with nothing but respect. We get into it all in this conversation, from running in the front to how she balances her running life with her day job and finally, winning Western States on 49 gels.

My guest today, Laz Piringer just ran across the US from LA to NYC. It was a 3200 mile transcontinental run that lasted 78 days! His fiancé, Abby was his crew and RV driver. We’re lucky enough to have them BOTH on the show today. His run was to support NO KID HUNGRY.  I know you guys are going to love this episode!

I’ve got a very inspirational guest for you guys this week. Gene “the ultrageezer” Dykes is 73 years old and he is outworking probably almost all of us. He runs any and every race, ranging from 1 mile to 200 miles.  He most recently broke the world record in his age group for the 50 kilometer distance, running it in 3:56. He’s completed the triple crown of 200s, which is three 200 mile races in three months. He was once voted #3 on the list of the 50 fittest over 50 years old, beating out Schwarzenegger and Stallone. What? C’mon. Gene has a lot of wisdom in the way he approaches his training and racing and he’s not slowing down any time soon. There’s more world records to break you know! I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did!

Welcome back, it’s Tuesday, June 29th and I’ve got another hitter for you!  Paul Maurer is a runner and an author and he recently published a fantastic novel called The Unforgiving Line.  I read the book and I really enjoyed it.  It’s well written and I love the way the author spins the tale.  Paul has written several books, some about running and others not so much.  This book, tells the story of an older man who was once an elite runner but at the critical moment, blew it and harbors a lot of resentment about that period of his life.  He meets a younger runner named DJ.  What starts from there is a beautiful relationship between the master and the student.

I’ve got another fabulous guest for you all this week. Her name is Laura Kaplan and to anyone who was at the Cocodona 250 this year, she was the one who was affectionately known as the nosebleed girl! Yes, she was the one you may have seen pictures of. Bloody nose, toilet paper stuffed in her nose and STILL MOVING FORWARD. She completed Cocodona and just a few weeks later, ran another hundred miler. I think she recovers like we all wish we did. She’s a ball of fire and she’s putting on lots of miles every week around the Boulder area. We chat about how she got into running, how it helps her mental health and of course Cocodona 250.

I’ve got a great guest for you this week, his name is Dr. Brendan McNulty.  He wasn’t a Dr. when he and I were roommates but he is now.  He’s a physical therapist and he works with a lot of common running injuries.  We chat about some of our past adventures and ultrarunning, our good buddy Logan and we go over ways to mitigate running injuries, both physical and mental.  Brendan has run several ultramarathons including the Leadville 100 and Grindstone 100.  He was there with me when I ran the Grand Canyon rim to rim to rim with a broken hand.  Good times!  I hope you guys have a great week!

He’s an ultrarunner and he most recently finished the Cocodona 250! I enjoyed talking to this guy because to me, he’s relatable.  He isn’t a professional athlete with tons of support and sponsorships. He’s a regular guy that works a full time job and uses his vacation time to go out and challenge himself with some of the world’s hardest races. And when those races are over, he has to go back to work. He’s lived through heartache, loss, addiction, recovery and he’s just thriving and getting stronger every day! He’s got a great attitude about life and I couldn’t be happier to have him on the show. I know you guys are going to love him too.
