Do Not Go Quietly w/ Eric Wilson

Killing MATURE BUCKS on small tracts of land is a special skill set and when you get a chance to talk to someone who has it dialed, you stop and listen.

JJ Dukart is a whitetail specialist —consistently killing mature bucks on small parcels where precision is everything. With a relentless focus on scent control, access, and patterning individual deer, JJ hunts with surgical discipline. Every stand, every wind, every entry route is calculated, because on tight ground, one mistake can blow the whole season.

We dove deep into JJ’s plan to hunt and harvest a 300 lb monster called Andre the Giant.  JJ describes how the property laid out as a small 20 acre tract and covered how  set up the parcel in the off-season with a strategic food plot, entry points, and wind strategies.  This is a master class in how to set up and hunt a small parcel.

We also dove into JJ’s full scent control regimen from off-season preparation of his clothing system, to storage, pre-hunt scent control,  day of the hunt scent management,  and clothing management on multi-day hunts.

JJ is a master at building hit lists, managing pressure, and setting up small properties to become consistent killing grounds—proving you don’t need big tracks of land to tag world-class whitetails

I hear a lot of guys talk about getting in CLOSE to BUCK BEDDING, but Johnny Stewart is one of the first I have had on the podcast that makes a living with this strategy.  We discussed the imperatives around how to scout areas to put yourself in a position to get in tight and kill a buck close to his bedding area.

Johnny is a seasoned public land whitetail hunter with over 30 years of experience. His deep understanding of mature whitetails and their adaptability in heavily hunted environments has earned him a respected place among the hunting community.

A good bit of our conversation focused around the way the wind works in hill country and uneven terrain, understanding thermals, and learning how to use them to your advantage to move into bedding areas. We also spent a good deal of time talking about how to scout and hunt specific parts of the country with focus on hill country, the midwest, and timbered environments.

Johnny's journey to proficiency as a hunter is a testament to his dedication and passion for the sport. He emphasizes the importance of learning directly from the animals and adapting strategies to specific environments.

Johnny serves on both the Asio Gear and Spartan Forge pro staff’s and frequently contributes to hunter forums, podcasts, and trade-shows to share his knowledge with other hunters.

Through his active presence on social media, particularly Instagram, Johnny shares his experiences and insights, inspiring both novice and seasoned hunters alike.

Ever hear the old saying “You can’t kill elk if you can’t find elk?”  After 7 days in Colorado hunting public land last year, it resonates with me on a different level. Archery elk hunting takes a different combination of skills and knowledge vs. chasing whitetail.  You have to get up close and personal from the ground to be able to harvest that bull you dream of all spring and summer.

Cody and I took a deep dive on many of the specific scenarios we face when trying to locate elk. Knowing how to work in & around clear cuts, burns, creek bottoms, drainages, and timber are the keys to figuring out where the elk are when they do not respond to vocalization.  Each terrain feature has its’ own unique strategy and Cody knows how to navigate them all.

Whether you are new to the elk game or have been doing it a while but are still leaning on elk vocalization as your location method, this conversation will serve you well as you prepare to get after it this September.

Ever wonder how guys like Andy can take a 2-3 day trip and still put a HUGE BUCK or BULL ON THE GROUND ?  Me too …. so in this episode I really dialed in with Andy how he prepares for different terrain areas based on the states he travels to.  Including ….

• Timber Country
• Agriculture Country / Midwest
• Hill Country like PA, West Virginia, Southern Ohio
• Plains States

We also talked about the fundamentals that put big bucks on the ground that so many of us tend to forget as we progress as hunters.  We finished up the podcast by going through Andy's entire ARCHERY SET UP from bow to arrows all the way to his release choices right now. If you are looking to LEVEL UP this season, this is a MUST LISTEN !

Andy is a resident of Michigan and a longtime DIY hunter who took up hunting later in life. With no mentor Andy learned to hunt through trial and error. He became obsessed with tracking down mature bucks in his pressured home state of Michigan. After years of consistent success he began to venture to other states from Wyoming to Maryland and everything in between.

Andy is a blue collar guy who works two jobs yet still finds a way to be successful on multiple DIY trips each fall. Although Andy loves hunting big bucks, the most important thing to him is challenging himself with new adventures as well as quality experiences with his friends and family in the outdoors.

Enjoy the podcast !

When I got on the pod w/ Andy Moeckel I knew we were going to talk about how to cook wild-game in a way that was brand new to me ( and that sounds insanely good ) , but didn’t know what an accomplished hunter Andy is.  I am looking forward to trying his method this week at Sorinex Outdoors Winterstrong event.  I think the best way to summarize the Flip-Flop is to take it straight from Andy’s website.  Enjoy the podcast.

“This all starts with my grandfather, Al Giddings and I guess the best place to start would be shortly after WW II when he got off the ship in San Francisco and decided to join the Department Of California Fish and Game in 1948. He became the main warden for the North Bay area, Marin, and Sonoma counties.  In his time spent in west Marin he was afforded the ability to help oversee fish ladders coming into the streams for the spawn as well as becoming familiar with all of the local hunting clubs and ranches. It was at a small sheep ranch in Nicasio where it is believed that he picked up this amazing style of cooking from a Portuguese rancher. This family would do entire sheep legs on a spit at a time and feed their families and local community.

My grandfather being the outdoorsman that he was instantly had the idea that, “if sheep is this good…venison will be better.” So of course, he dove into saving hind quarters off of deer and sharing this method with the rest of the local ranching community of west Marin. He would travel from hunting club to hunting club passing along this marvelous style, that at the time erupted across Marin and Sonoma counties. It became so well know that even the meat processors knew of then and some still to this day know how to cut up a Flip Flop when asked to do so!

For me hearing my mom share the stories of her childhood growing up in that kind of environment makes so much sense to me because that’s exactly how I remember my childhood as well. Family and friends, hunters and non-hunters alike  getting together for great laughs, sharing adventures and the love of the outdoors. There were some parties that were so big it would take several deer legs and sometimes even elk legs to feed the masses.

At some point, and my father doesn’t remember the year, the blade was passed down to him by Al and he started cutting up the legs. I can’t remember many deer that anyone in the family had broke down where the legs went to steak or burger. In the breakdown of our deer – as it’s been taught to me by my dad – neck meat is stew, backstraps and loins are the steaks, shoulders and ribs can be burger or stew and those hams baby, those hams are for the grill.

“There is no I REPEAT, NO BETTER WAY TO EAT VENISON or any animal that doesn’t give trig. The Flip Flop experience is one that no person should ever miss out on.”

We all want to climb the mountain but what happens when you get there and realize all the things you thought you would find at the top are missing ?

Clint Campbell is the host of the Truth from The Stand podcast. With over 400 Episodes, Clint has engaged with some of the best big buck killers in the country.

We spent a lot of our time discussing the unique challenges/solutions involved in hunting LOW-DENSITY deer areas as well as strategies that can better help you tackle your OUT-OF-STATE hunts.

Clint spent this past season chasing a monster in his home state of PA, spending over 30 days in his truck/trailer chasing this 200 plus giant, only to find out the buck had been found dead by some locals in the area in mid-November. Great story.

Clint is a wealth of knowledge and I know you will take away some great tips you can apply to your time in the field. Thanks for listening.
