  • Ep.36 Trainers to the rescue with Bobby Dorafshar - DTP

    Hey guys, Mariano here!

If you've been listening to the podcast for a while then you've definitely heard the name Bobby Dorafshar before. He's one of those rare people that can truly say that he's helped progress the very landscape of dog rescue in California. He personally spearheaded one of the biggest, most organized disaster-relief efforts for animals in the history of our country. His accomplishments go on and on. But, you all may know him as our good friend and Brent's beloved mentor.

In this episode, we have the opportunity to catch a glimpse into the amazing life and story of Bobby Dorafshar. From his childhood in Iran. Doing everything he could to save the dogs he'd find in the neighborhood. Moving to the U.S. and working odd jobs while taking night classes to learn ESA. To his introduction into the world of rescue. How he forever changed the landscape of the rescue world in LA. To the story of building his training business (where Brent and I met), and so much more!!

This is the guy that has stoked the fire in Brent's passion for dog training! He's an absolute legend. We're excited to have a chance to speak with him and we have no doubt that you'll enjoy the ride.
    Thanks for listening!

  • Ep.35 Proper introduction of training tools - DTP

    Hey everyone, Mariano here!

Here's a question for you. What is your most successful method of introducing a training tool to an owner? Do you do it the moment that you have a strong inclination that this may be the best approach for that particular dog? Or do you prefer to gradually move your way through tools knowing all the while that you plan to aim for one in particular so that the clients can feel the need for the tool in a more natural way? It's a good question. On the one hand, you don't want to seem disingenuous, or like you've been "beating around the bush", by starting small. On the other hand, if you scare the client away before they ever give the tool a chance then you're not helping them at all.

Brent and I have mixed feelings on this. We don't agree on everything, but we try to see the value in the others' approach. In this episode, we go over our respective approaches in regard to introducing training tools. The truth may lie somewhere in the middle, and the best approach will always depend on the trainer and their strengths and communication styles with clients. Join us as we discuss how we approach this topic, how we came about these ideas, and what we have yet to learn regarding this topic.

  • Ep.34 Old school marketing still works! - DTP

    Hey guys, Mariano here!
Brent and I have been thinking lately about what many of our listeners and fellow dog trainers are often wondering. They are often wondering what is the best way to market your services to achieve a great client and referral base, as well as excellent ROI. It's something that stumps us all! Marketing is such a dense topic that professional marketing is a career all it's own.
The precise nature of marketing is made even more complex as we enter the new age of marketing via social media platforms. However, it seems that even as these grow, old school marketing still works absolute wonders!

In this episode, Brent and I dive into the amazing value of old school marketing. We discuss how it's different from modern-day marketing, and we discuss some of our personal stories regarding marketing strategies and how we came to learn about them. We're excited to cover this topic and we look forward to visiting it more in the future with guests. We hope that you find this episode helpful! If you have a suggestion for a topic or something you'd like our take on, please feel free to reach out to us. Our contact info will be listed below.

  • Ep.33 The major disagreement: Pure Positive vs. Balanced Training - DTP

    Hey everybody,

Mariano here! Brent and I want to thank you for your support. We've been reaching out to trainers of all different viewpoints and methods. This is mainly because we notice the crazy amount of anger and vitriol that trainers of different beliefs can sling toward each other. The most popular examples of this are the two major "factions" in dog training today, force-free and balanced trainers.

With this all being said, we have been looking into a way to open a line of dialogue between these two ideals. We figured the podcast was an excellent way to do exactly that! We, therefore, have a homework assignment for each of you. Please help us reach out to pure-positive trainers who you can think of who may be willing to have a civil conversation about where the training methods agree and disagree. We recorded this episode to serve as a sort of preparation for us and our listeners, We've based the topics of this episode on our current understandings of training as well as our current understandings of the arguments presented from both sides. We're happy with the result, nonetheless, we know that there's no substitute for good ol' conversation to help us understand the divide. Thanks for listening!

  • Ep.32 Our Journeys:Developing a reliable recall - DTP

    Hey guys, Mariano here!

Brent and I are often asked about developing a solid recall. After all, it's arguably the single most important command that your dog can have in its bag of tricks. Having a reliable recall has saved many a dog from terrible situations. It's sad to say, but having a solid recall would have saved many more. Brent and I have heard your concerns and we're here to help.

We figured what better way to go over the many facets of developing a solid recall than to relive our personal journeys and how we've each come to the conclusions that we have. This episode includes personal stories as to how we found out the hard way that recalls are so important to have down. We discuss the importance of asking your training clients not to jump the gun and try for off-leash if the dog isn't ready. We also discuss some of the methods used to develop a reliable recall. All this and more!

We hope that you find this episode helpful! If you have a suggestion for a topic or something you'd like our take on, please feel free to reach out to us. Our contact info will be listed below. Thanks for listening!

  • Ep.28 Interview with Melissa and Vanessa Velez Pt.1 - DTP

We dive into the amazing stories of two dog training sisters from Latin America. Vanessa and Melissa Velez are two of the most devoted trainers that you'll ever meet. Having traveled to the U.S. to further their studies in dog training, they've become the trailblazers of modern dog training in a region that is still learning the ropes. They both came into the practice so naturally having both studied and worked in different fields before realizing their passion for dog training. This, among many things, lends to their very interesting insights into the world of dog training.

Brent and I are lucky enough to call these two ladies our friends. We were also lucky enough to dive into the current state of training in Latin America. We discuss training tools and methods, difficulties that wee all experience with clients, the importance of finding the right mentor, and so much more! You'll definitely want to give this episode a listen!
