    Enjoyable short reads
*A free ecopy was received in exchange for my honest opinion.
I love short stories. There is nothing more genius than a story that succeeds in transporting me into another world or mindset in just a few hundred words. This short story collection includes stories with elements of fantasy and science fiction. I like reading about people or happenings that are out of the ordinary, so I enjoyed this collection.
I particularly enjoyed The Gift and Two of a Kind.
The plot moves smoothly and convincingly in The Gift and places me on the side of the protagonist. His wife definitely deserves the âgiftâ in the end.
Two of a Kind is bittersweet. How the two youngsters are âof a kindâ is slightly disturbing, but there is a feeling of hope, and I am such a sucker for possible happy endings.
Room for improvement: typos and grammatical errors in almost every story; nothing an experienced proofreader cannot fix.
A Mysterious and Fun Collection of Stories!
First of all- check this book cover! I love it. It's mystery lies in its ability to create illusion. I don't know if it's just me but this book plays with me- like vertigo! Not in a bad way, but it's different and you know me. I love different. The Missing Loved Ones, by TNae Wilcox is a collection of short stories that plays with your mind as well. From prankster boxes to stealthy aliens in the night, this book does the job when it comes to campfire stories!
The stories are bits and pieces, strewn together to make a nice collection of the macabre, mysterious and the deadly. The author found a way to just put some serious situations all in one book that keep you turning until the very end. And then, at the very end, is another surprise! Yes, but I'll save that for the end.
Out of the 8 stories, one was multiple chapters long, I think He's You and What About Her were the best. I have to admit though, I didn't read The Gift, because I was 'gifted' with the audiobook! It will be a separate review. He's You was about a boy who'd been in a terrible accident and in a coma. With his parents thinking he'll not recover, they cloned him. YES- cloned him! Well, the problem is that, their real son, the first son, came through and recovered 100%- so there were two of the same kid! Uh-oh...
What About Her was pretty good too! That one ws on aliens. A girl in a home ruled by a stank-acting mother, is given the responsibility of caring for her grandfather. The man's a mess, but he's not as inept as all would believe. When a strange visitor comes calling, the girl may only survive because of the old man who never speaks.
All of these stories were fun to read. I was only confused by one: Prankster In The Box, but I still enjoyed. If you're looking for spooky but more like Tales From the Darkside, so you won't be terrified or grossed out, this book is for you. Check it out, directly from the author herself or anywhere books are sold.

  • The Kissing Booth Girl and Other Stories Audiobook by A. C. Wise

Title: The Kissing Booth Girl and Other Stories
    Author: A. C. Wise
    Narrator: Wendy Almeida
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 7 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-28-17
    Publisher: Lethe Press
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes
Genres: Fiction, Short Stories & Anthologies
    Publisher's Summary:
''Ladies and Gentlemen: I give you the Kissing Booth Girl! Lips that beguile. Oh, I promise, the nearest thing to nuzzling an angel can be yours - today - for a shiny round seated liberty I know you carry in your very pockets as I speak.'' But to mechanically-inclined Beni, is the ethereal girl who fell from the sky a wish come true, or false hope for life beyond the confines of the odd carnival called home.
Her story - as well as tales of an order of deep-sea diving nuns caring for a sunken chapel, and a high school boy asked to prom, by the only dead kid he's ever met - can be found in A.C. Wise's newest collection of the fantastical, the weird, the queer, and the poignant.

Diverse, Surreal, Beautiful Speculative Fiction Collection
When I heard A.C. Wise, of The Ultra-Fabulous Glitter Squadron Saves the World Again (previously reviewed here) had a new collection out, I was quick to snatch up the ebook. This short story collection is even better than her first, a weird fiction/speculative melange with shades of Karen Russell, Kelly Link, and Judith Gorog (did anyone read Please Do Not Touch and end up with weird dreams forever?) Unique to her stories is a sense of hope, completion, and rightness--the good might not prevail yet, but Wise does not doubt that one day it might.
The Kissing Booth Girl has lots of queer rep, and identities as diverse as its settings: girls in love building a time machine to write their own happily ever afters over and over, an undersea foundling defying an order of aquatic nuns to bring salvation to the drowned dead. What happens if you move into a home meant for a witch (and her cat) several lifetimes over. Vengeful robots and golems, tender aliens and ghosts. Wise's writing is fluid, descriptive, and paints delightful, horrifying pictures of what could be, while reassure the readers of their worth, the stories of their purpose. An absolutely delightful collection, and I can't wait to read more of what A.C. Wise writes and recommends.
    Literary, sexy, folkloric masterpiece
One of the best collections of the year. Aside from the variety of backdrops and concepts, Wise creates truly unique characters with full lives that you can't help imagining even after you finish reading. They're raw and real and sad and wonderful. The book is full of incredible sentences, observations, and imagery, and has a colorful cast of LGBTQ+ characters. I have a student who bemoaned the absence of characters like her in steampunk, sci-fi, and contemporary lit. I'm showing her this book the first chance I get.
    A treasure trove of stories
Last year I read and reviewed A.C. Wiseâs The Ultra Fabulous Glitter Squadron Saves the World Again and I loved it. It was fun, camp, and utterly delightful. So when Wise approached me about reviewing her latest collection, The Kissing Booth Girl and Other Stories, I agreed with alacrity, as I was keen to read more of her work. And while this collection is perhaps less exuberant than the previous one, it is a deeply thoughtful and thought-provoking set of stories, which while spanning the breadth of the speculative genre in space and time, all deal with identity and agency.
The stories debate identity, in the broadest sense of the word, as a construct â whether a societal construct, a philosophical one, or a literal one â and whether choice can ever be a part of that.

    Beautiful
This is such a beautiful collection of short stories, with a hint of magic realism. Some of the descriptions are breathtaking. The Hunters Wife and Mkondo affected me the most, but I loved all the stories. The performance was excellent, giving enough time to appreciate and savour Anthony Doerr delectable writing.

    Publisher's Summary:
You've probably heard about the man Dick Cheney shot, but what if he wasn't the only one?
Ian Davis is a loner, obsessive-compulsive, and a recovering alcoholic. But when a homeless man - who resembles actor Gary Busey - starts harassing him, he resorts to dangerous old habits.
Kenny, a former sitcom star, is a veteran comedian whose career nosedives after a damaging video goes viral.
In these 18 stories we also meet: a distraught husband who experiences heartbreak and salvation after a texting teenager changes his life; a man who returns to his hometown to find his first love stacking jars in Costco; a western sheriff who confronts a pedophile - and his own past; and a successful attorney who abandons his career to play the iPad guitar.
Unexpected, humorous, sometimes dark, and surprisingly heartfelt, these award-winning tales explore the secret life of men as they pass into adulthood, middle age, and old age, confronting lust, pain, guilt, bewilderment, and mortality. The collection fearlessly distills for the listener tinctures of joy, pain, madness, heartbreak, greed, and other components of the human capacity for good and evil, for beauty and ugliness. O'Leary showcases humanity in a fluent, fun way, which will let you peek into the most intimate and the well familiar entrails of existence. Few books around these days possess the capability to bring both a tear to your eye and smile to your lips, within the span of a few chapters, such as this work does.

    highly recommend
didn't realize when I bought this book that it was a collection of short stories. I wanted something easy to concentrate on while driving. this fit the bill perfectly. amusing tales with great irony. extremely enjoyable, and David Bosco took me right into the stories.
    Funny, Uplifting and Emotionally Charged
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Definitely. Funny, gripping and emotionally engaging, Timothy OLearys draws the reader into the pages of this collection of stories that encompasses life and drama, amusement and despair, depicting those people we meet in real life, quirky or not. The stories are written well and without question, brought fully to life with the talents of narrator David Bosco, a master of voices with a new personality looming around each corner of the book. A undeniably fun listen thatll put a smile on your face, evoke emotions and keep the listener engaged. Get yours!
Who was your favorite character and why?
The characters all shined, but the guy with the imaginary girlfriend... Priceless.
Have you listened to any of David Boscos other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes. David Bosco's performance stands out in all his works. He has a superior range for voices and a feel for the characters' personalities, bringing an undeniable realism to stories. One of the best rising talents in the business.
If you could rename Dick Cheney Shot Me in the Face, what would you call it?
    I like the offbeat title.
    Any additional comments?
I'll be watching for Timothy O'Leary in the future, and the narration of David Bosco speaks for itself.

    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes
Genres: Fiction, Short Stories & Anthologies
    Publisher's Summary:
One of India's finest and most prolific writers, Ruskin Bond has been putting pen to paper for well over six decades. Since The Room on the Roof - his award-winning debut novel, which introduced readers to the unforgettable Rusty, the orphan from Dehradun - Bond has created characters both charming and eccentric, which have endured in the popular imagination. And, in what is perhaps his most towering achievement, Bond has brought to pulsing life the mountains, valleys and rivers of Garhwal, as well as the quiet magic of small, tucked-away places, in book after book.
The Writer on the Hill is a comprehensive selection of Bond's fiction and non-fiction, both popular and little-known. In 'Masterji', a young man meets his old Hindi teacher on a train platform, in handcuffs. In the excerpt from The Room on the Roof, Rusty stands up to his bullying guardian. 'Man and Leopard' describes, in mesmerizing prose, a heart-breaking encounter between man and the wild. And, in 'Once upon a Mountain Time', Bond creates a charming portrait of his little patch of earth in Mussoorie.
A tribute to one of the most popular and loved writers of India, The Writer on the Hill is also a celebration of the quiet, unhurried life, lived at one's own pace. This volume will delight Bond's fans everywhere.
    Members Reviews:
    World class writer
I grew up in Mussoorie India where Ruskin Bond lives. He is a living legend there, deeply appreciated and respected.
    a breath of fresh air
Classic story telling . A great read for children and adults . Ruskin Bond uses simple English but the descriptive narrative transports you to his world of rural, rustic India. You end up smelling the smells, tasting the food, exulting in the hilly pastures and damp air. A welcome breath of fresh air in an overstimulated world of trite and pretentious story telling. Absolutely 5-star

  • A Slanting of the Sun Audiobook by Donal Ryan

Title: A Slanting of the Sun
    Subtitle: Stories
    Author: Donal Ryan
    Narrator: Wayne Farrell
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 2 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-20-16
    Publisher: Steerforth
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 3 votes
Genres: Fiction, Short Stories & Anthologies
    Publisher's Summary:
Donal Ryan's short stories pick up where his acclaimed novels The Spinning Heart and The Thing About December left off, dealing with dramas set in motion by loneliness and displacement and revealing stories of passion and desire where less astute observers might fail to detect the humanity that roils beneath the surface. Sometimes these dramas are found in ordinary, mundane situations; sometimes they are triggered by fateful encounters or tragic decisions. At the heart of these stories, crucially, is how people are drawn to each other and cling to love when and where it can be found.
In a number of the these stories, emotional bonds are forged by traumatic events caused by one of the characters - between an old man and the frightened young burglar left to guard him while his brother is beaten; between another young man and the mother of a girl whose death he caused when he crashed his car; between a lonely middle-aged shopkeeper and her assistant. Disconnection and new discoveries pervade stories involving emigration (an Irish priest in war-torn Syria) or immigration (an African refugee in Ireland). Some of the stories are set in the same small town in rural Ireland as the novels, with names that will be familiar to Ryan's listeners.
In haunting prose, Donal Ryan has captured the brutal beauty of the human heart in all its failings, hopes, and quiet triumphs.
    Members Reviews:
    Lyrical prose, masterfully narrated. Outstanding!
Donal Ryan has a breathtaking talent for infusing his characters with a desperate, lonesome beauty even as their lives take them on journeys into darkness, and sometimes horror. It is hard to believe that anything could compare with the experience of absorbing every gorgeously constructed sentence on the printed page, but Wayne Farrell's sublime narration provides an experience every bit as satisfying and evocative. Like the best storytellers, Farrell reels in the listener with an authentic Irish voice that is intimate, expressive, and crystal clear. He brings each character into vivid, three-dimensional life, adding just the right amount of emotional color to the unique aspects of Irish phrasing and slang that Ryan captures so well. It is a masterful performance of a brilliantly written work.

This set contains two of Andy Adams' enjoyable tales of life on the cattle trail of the American West. Adams was one of the most authentic of the classic western writers, bringing firsthand experience to his depictions of cowhands, rogues, and other remarkable characters on the frontier. Volume two includes two tales that highlight Adams unique and subtle brand of humor: "Seigerman's Percent", in which three cow punchers come up with an ingenious way to make ends meet during the slack winter period between cattle drives; and "Bad Medicine", the tale of a "Down East" moneybags who learns the folly of trying to ramrod a cattle drive himself.

    Adams: The Real McCoy
It ain't just about cattle brands. It's what it says it is: cowboy and other Western stories told by various men sitting mainly around a campfire on the trail. The most authentic cowboy and cattle tales I've ever read. And Adams is an excellent story-teller. If you're interested in the real thing, give Adams a try.
    Three Stars
    Good to pass some time
Rings with the voices of the real West
Fictional or not, this is the best portrayal of life in the Old West available! If you read Ike Fudge or Teddy Roosevelt, you find the same ring of authenticity.
Lots of fun & exciting stories!
You can imagine being around the campfires with the cowboys hearing all about their stories while out on cattle drives and their lives in the Old West. I've really been enjoying Andy Adams books.
