This week is a deep dive into insulin resistance, and what causes it, who is at risk, the other disease processes that it underpins and how to identify it. Mikki and Ben also discuss dietary protein and fat, ketosis and neurological disorders, including epilepsy, Parkinson's and migraines, and talk about the impact of a lower carbohydrate approach on thyroid function.
Dr Ben Bikman does a great job at translating science into information that everyone can understand and take action on. This was a great info session!
NZ based study investigating Alzheimer's and ketogenic diet: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33622392/
Dr Ben Bikman is a professor of pathophysiology and biomedical scientist at Brigham Young University (BYU) whose research agenda focuses on the molecular mediators of obesity and its co-morbidities. Employing cell-autonomous to whole-body systems, his lab's main efforts explore the intimate associations between the metabolic and immune systems. His most recent work has focused on scrutinizing the role of ketones as metabolic signaling molecules. He has taken his research findings and written Why We Get SIck, a book that distills this information for people to understand and take action on. He presents groundbreaking evidence linking major diseases, including cancer, diabetes, and Alzheimer's disease, to a common root cause—insulin resistance—and shares an easy, effective plan to reverse and prevent it.
