We are constantly bombarded by narratives and sensory input that overwhelm us on a daily basis. But Dr. Ravi Iyer shares how developing mindfulness and stepping outside of narratives can lead to profound changes.
During his conversation with hosts Walt Thiessen and Anne-Marie Young, Dr. Iyer discussed how even with a busy medical practice seeing 25-30 patients per day, he never feels overworked. When asked how, he explained that it comes down to “finding the eye of the storm” – a space of calm awareness amidst life’s constant demands.
Dr. Iyer learned at a young age that he had a gift for helping others feel calm and see the bigger picture. This inspired his career in medicine, with the goal of removing fear, doubt and confusion from people’s lives. But he acknowledged that true health and wellness go beyond just physical functioning – it’s a state of being rooted in something larger than ourselves.
When Walt asked how to cultivate such a mindset, Dr. Iyer emphasized rooting one’s identity in purpose, passion or a higher purpose beyond our circumstances. This allows challenges to not define our well-being. Anne-Marie agreed this resonated deeply.
Dr. Iyer also shared how developing mindfulness through practices like breathwork has allowed him to step outside of narratives and see demands “spinning around” him from a place of calm observation. This cultivates a “lightness of being” that attracts others and opens up opportunities.
For those struggling with perceived scarcity, Dr. Iyer offered an alternative perspective – that what truly matters exists within our own minds, not in physical objects subject to time and space. Reframing our relationship to the world in this way can transform our experience of lack into one of abundance.
