You may feel like you are in a wilderness of your own choosing, or that some evil force has coerced you there. But it is in fact the Spirit that draws us out into the wilderness, over and over again. We never graduate from it. We never escape it. When we get here, we are always confronted with the same temptations: to resolve the tension prematurely, “take the Bible literally” (turning timeless truth into trivial bumper stickers), or sell our soul for influence. But there aren’t just devils waiting for us in the wilderness—there are angels waiting to minister to us, too.
