"Mitragynine associated death incidents or MADI is indeed a legitimate, serious public health concern. Our results have provided evidence of the adverse effects associated with using kratom (mostly in combination with other substances), primarily intoxication and death. As more people utilize kratom, more research is needed to elucidate the role of kratom and its alkaloids, particularly mitragynine, in drug intoxication and whether it exacerbates symptoms in people with cardiovascular, neurocognitive, and respiratory disorders. The co-use of other drugs, particularly opioids, increased the risks of death from kratom use. The FDA warns the public not to use kratom due to its high risks of abuse, dependence, addiction, and even death. Until clinical trials establishing safe doses and abuse potential are conducted, this will most certainly remain the position of the FDA."
