Meet Sammy, the parrot Zoom art therapist
Dr Erin Partridge keeps her art therapy class and workshops going through web cameras due to the COVID-19 pandemic along with her special helper.
"Sammy is the larger parrot and she thinks Zoom has been invented just for her," Partidge tells Shanghai Daily. "She likes to meet all my students."
When Partridge talks about art and art therapy, her eyes sparkle her mood elevates and the inspiration spreads.
"For art therapy, we talk about going into the state of flow.
We go into this state of flow where the clock kind of drops away.
And we're just absorbed in the process of making.
"I've seen that happen even in a big group, where there's lots of activity and lots of people talking at first. At a certain point. All the chatter stops. All in here is pencil moving on paper and charcoal and someone with scissors. And all you hear are the sounds of art making."
Her typical day starts as she grabs her stand-up paddle boarder before the sun is up.
"There's something about watching the sunrise, watching that transition between dark and light that is just good for me as a person.
"As an art therapist I love metaphor, so those transitional spaces, like seeing and being somewhere where both things can be true, that what's therapy does."
Partridge, a certified art-therapist based in the United States, shares her views on how art therapy can be breaded by technology and some handy exercises that people can apply to engage with art on a normal day.

Elise.

Finding meaning of life through mindfulness
Author of more than 50 books on creativity, mental health and critical psychology, Eric Maisel is quite an expert in this field. Although retired, Maisel still gets up at 5am and works 8 hours straight every day to keep his creativity flowing.
“There is no retirement for a creative person, because that’s one of the ways we make meaning,” Maisel, who’s also blogged for Psychology Today and runs writing workshops across the world, told us.
He is at the forefront of the movement to rethink mental health and has been devoted to helping people create meaning and seize opportunity in life.
“Even the greatest artists only have some masterpieces and a lot of ordinary work. We have to get a very clear picture that mistakes and messes and failures and disappointments, and all of that is coming. That’s a mature, creative position.”
His most recent books include “Redesign Your Mind,” “The Power of Daily Practice,” “Unleashing the Artist Within” and “Why Smart People Hurt.”
