  • Eat It - 23 July 2017

On today's show we spoke to Joost Bakker about the very sad passing of chef Jeremy Strode, and the impact he had on the industry. We also previewed an Oz Harvest event tomorrow at Melbourne Uni called Think, Eat, and Save. But we didn't speak for too long as he has to prepare lunch for Ben Shewry and family!

Next up Citizen Cacao's Georgie Castle and All Are Welcome's Boris Portney popped in to talk about their upcoming Sunday stints at Fitzroy's Grub, as well as their respective journeys through the food industry.

To finish we had a drink... but not just any drink, as Moet & Hennessy brand ambassador Mick Formosa brought a bottle of Glenmorangie Signet whisky from his recent travels around Scotland and beyond.

Today we briefly spoke about Matt's recent meal at Richmond's Minamishima; what an incredible Japanese experience! (but not cheap)

We spoke about the origins of BBQ cuisine, as well as some of Alicia's favourite street foods around Asia.

We finished today's show with a chat to the current chef at Australia's Casey Station in Antarctica, Andrew Donald. We spoke about the working environment, the challenges, and also the importance of the role of the chef in everyday life when working in such isolated conditions.

  • Eat It - 25 June 2017

As we make our way through the depths of a chilly Melbourne winter we chatted about how to make the perfect roast potato; our top tips are to choose the correct spud (look for a sebago or dutch cream, ideally just brushed so you still have to clean them) and add half a teaspoon of bi-carb soda when you're par-boiling them. Yum!

Truffle Melbourne's Nigel Woods joined us in the studio to talk about Australia's burgeoning industry, which is now the fourth largest truffle producing country in the world. We chatted about the differences growing truffles in Australia vs Europe, why to avoid truffle oil, and where to buy the elusive fungus here in Melbourne.

Gabriel Gate has been synonymous with French cuisine in Australia for as long as any of us can remember, and we spoke to him about his most recent book So French So Sweet. If you're the sort of person that never cooks desserts, Gabriel recommends you aim to learn a new dish every few months to slowly expand your repertoire.

On a gorgeous Melbourne winter's day we started the show talking to the Good Food Guide's Roslyn Grundy. There are huge changes happening to the Guide this year, as the Melbourne and Sydney editions are combined to form a national tome that also covers Australia's other cities. It's going to be huge - roughly twice the size of the current guide - and is due out in October.

Next up we were joined by the awesome team behind Fitzroy's Smith & Daughters, Shannon Martinez and Mo Wyse. It's not a "big thing" to be Vegan anymore, and we chatted about what to put on a vegetable-based plate during winter.

Lastly we were re-joined by a Triple R favourite Justin "Digger" Calverley who has just released his first book called The Urban Farmer. And guess what? It's a crackerjack book, based on his long-running urban farming course from Ceres Environmental Park.

On today's show we went on the road to a town called Lindenow, and caught up with Stuart Greig about the East Gippsland Vegetable Innovation Day, bringing together an enormous number of seeds and vegetable varietals in one of Australia's best growing regions.

As the weather gets colder it's a good time to think about how to make the best use of the remaining Summer and Autumn produce, and we replayed an interview from last year with broadcaster and farmer Matthew Evans. His book Not Just Jam focusses on how best to make preserves, and we spoke about some of his tips to get the best results.

We finished the show with an extended chat with UK food writer and Masterchef judge Jay Rayner. We spoke about his books including the recent release The Ten Food Commandments, as well as his journey into food journalism and what keeps him interested in the industry.
