Elk hunting in Washington State is very difficult.  You have to choose which side of the state you want to hunt (East or West).  Then you have to choose your exclusive weapon (Archery, Muzzleloader, or Rifle).  Seasons are very short compared to other states out west.  Draw odds are bleak for residents and nonresidents have to buy an elk tag/license just to be able to apply.  There's a lot of room for improvement when it comes to managing the elk herds of Washington State.  Today, we dissect their management systems and offer up a few solutions to the problem.

Today we record on the road driving back home from a bomb run bear hunt, my good buddy Jake Webb jumps on the podcast to share how he's basically crushed the elk hunting learning curve.  Jake is a father and blue collar hard working elk hunter who has punched elk tags in Montana two years in a row.  We dissect his approach to solo elk hunting in the backcountry, his gear failures and successes, and finally we uncover how he got into 'ElkShape' and stayed there.

E Scouting is basically a relatively new approach to understanding your potential elk areas via a desktop computer.  Rather than waiting for the snow to melt in your elk areas so you can get boots on the ground, why not utilize a computer and explore new elk areas.  Unfortunately, there's often a bit of confusion when the subject comes up, so, today we bring on subject matter expert Mark Livesay of Treeline Academy to break down some of the best practices when it comes to creating a digital strategic hunt plan for the fall.  We cover tools of the trade like Google Earth and Basemap, as well as what to look for while studying a variety of maps and terrain.
