Samantha Allen
– The Confident Retirement Podcast with Kris Flammang Episode 018: Samantha Allen
Samantha Allen is the owner of Law Mom, LLC. Her legal experience started at the Wareham District Courthouse; from there, she worked for a big law firm in Boston, MA, which led her to open her general practice law firm. She felt that there was more, something that she needed to do, and I hadn't figured it out yet. In 2019, the message was clear, and the "message" was right in front of her face. Have you ever thought to yourself, I am young or I am healthy, I don't need an estate plan? Truthfully, even as an attorney, the last thing she wanted to think about was an estate plan.
After a healthy pregnancy, Sam, a 33-year-old healthy woman, became deathly ill and almost lost her life after giving birth. After her own experience and learning that approximately 69% of parents do not have an estate plan for their family, she opened Law Mom, LLC. Law Mom is a Massachusetts Estate Planning Firm with a modern legal approach - focused on your specific family dynamic, keeping your family out of court and conflict.
Listen to this dynamic The Confident Retirement Podcast episode with Samantha Allen about how a near Death Experience led to a New Career. More than being a traditional lawyer, Samantha is into helping families with the use of her degree and more focused on building relationships with her clients than being the stereotypical lawyer that people usually think of.
Here is what to expect on this week’s show:
-How her past experience prompted her to realize the importance of estate planning and how she could use her degree to help the community?
-How does that work, if someone has minor children and they've never done any guardianship designations?
-Something that she would tell to her younger self that she now knows.
-Differences between a personal family lawyer and a safe planner, and enhancements that she brings to clients.
-Misconceptions that the general public have about lawyers.
-Biggest fears or concerns that people typically have.
-Positive or the negative impact of wealth on people.
-What tool can be used and be the most helpful or make the biggest impact in estate planning and how to know “blank spots” in one’s family?
-Samantha’s passion about children, especially children with Type One Diabetes.
-Biggest opportunity in terms of growing her business.
-How to start and have an estate plan?

Highlights:
[01:10-01:25]
“And long story short, I was in my hospital bed writing my estate plan. And it was not an experience that I would wish on anyone. And this prompted me to realize I could really use my legal degree to help the community overall.”
[05:51-06:03]
“I really like the, actually going off over talking about the relationships that I have with my clients. I think that that was my real, where I know that was my goal with Law Mom, and I see it happening.”
[08:34-08:45]
“But I also think, you know, this type, in this line of work, we're dealing with families, so we need to take a step back and really listen to what the family that's in front of us means.”
[26:38-27:10]
“We're planning for our loved ones. And I see a lot of conflict and chaos when planning isn't done. And the last thing anyone wants, like, especially me as a parent is like my family fighting about assets, right? So, if you can really plan ahead, you're saving your family so much heartache later, additional heartache, ‘cause of course, they're already emotionally, you know, distraught. And I hear time and time again that the planning gives my clients peace of mind, which is awesome.”
