Have you ever heard of a country named San Marino? I have to admit that I have never heard of it before doing this podcast. Anyway, San Marino is the world’s oldest republic. Legend has it that it was founded by a Croatian stonemason named San Marino on September 3, 301. He and his followers climbed to this country in the mountains of northern Italy to escape the prosecution of Christians by the Roman Empire Diocletian. San Marino is so tiny that it doesn’t have an airport or a train station. To get there, you have to land in Italy and get there by car. The population of the country is only 33600, and it has a nickname of Land of Clifftop Castles. Because the country is so ancient, the roads are all paved with cobblestone. There are lifts or cable cars dotted all over the capital to help people who have difficulties walking up the steep cobblestone roads.
