Hey ADHDer!
Today's episode is all about the ADHD identity crisis... not sure what that means?
Well an identity crisis is a period of uncertainty and confusion in which a person's sense of identity becomes insecure, typically due to a change in their expected aims or role in society. And I believe ADHDers go through an identity crisis later in the life due to three reasons:
1) We have always been given negative feedback about who we are and feel lost later in life because we are tired of being the opposite of who we actually are;
2) We like to try on a whole bunch of identities through hobbies and then feel bad (or others make us feel bad) when the hobby dopamine wears off and we no longer like it; and
3) We have always been people pleasers and never learned what we actually like because we spent all our time doing what everyone else likes instead.
Eventually we hate all of these things and sort of go through an identity crisis when we have to figure out how to function in a society that hasn't really let us function in it.
