Dr. Margaret Barrow is an author, keynote speaker, and a tenured Professor at Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC). She is also the Founder and CEO of It’s NOLA (formerly Brooklyn Granola), a healthy snack manufacturing business that was born when Margaret discovered a unique way to turn toasted granola into balls that she then shared into small batches each week with hungry college students and faculties. Ever since it was started in 2018, it always had its core goal to give back to community college communities by caring for 3 to 5 students who work to complete their degrees for up to 3 years. This goal is yet to be completely materialized and they’re on their way to doing so by reaching out to companies and industry influencers and encouraging them to give their products opportunities to flourish within the health food industry.
Being with BMCC for around 16 years, Dr. Barrow started as a full-time instructor at BMCC while working on her doctorate at Teacher’s College, Columbia University. Since then, she has been involved in a number of initiatives and committees from 2005 to 2007 such as leading the SGA Leadership Scholarship Committee, being the Faculty Advisor in the Title V Advisement Initiative, taking part in the Women's Studies Project Committee, Co-designed BMCC Teaching Academy and served on the Advisory Board, among many others. She has also co-written a STEM grant that was awarded half a million dollars which got her to conceptualize Mid-STEP and expand C-STEP programs that also included middle school students. She's been the recipient of many awards such as the Chancellor’s Scholar’s Award in 2013, and Chancellor’s Institutional Grant/Award, 2015 that was awarded to her by Chancellor James Milliken.
