Episode #49: How to Eat to Improve Your Metabolism and Reverse your Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 Diabetes is Reversible. It is that simple. Many healthcare practitioners have been taught that you cannot reverse the disease, it will simply get put into remission, don't believe it. I have seen in my own experience and through the results of several clinical trials that a person who is classified as type 2 diabetic can fix their metabolism and have a completely healthy blood sugar profile in as little as 4 weeks with a strategic nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle approach. 

People often say that nutrition is 80% and exercise is 20%. Nutrition is always most important, but that true contribution will depend on your goals. With type 2 diabetes, I think that number is closer to 60% nutrition and 40% exercise, because exercise is a very useful treatment for jump starting metabolism and getting the body back working properly. 

Poor mitochondrial function is the hallmark characteristic of type 2 diabetes at the cellular level. Improving the function of the mitochondria relies on restricting carbohydrates so that insulin levels will drop and the body will be forced to metabolize fat for fuel. For someone who is not on medication the best approach is probably a ketogenic type of diet.

However, many type 2 diabetics are on hypoglycemic medication and this type of diet can lead to extremely low energy and could actually put them at risk for a hypoglycemic event, which we definitely want to avoid.
