Florida State Seminoles football is one day out from its first scrimmage of the 2022 preseason.

FSU threw on pads for the first time Tuesday, working its way towards getting game ready for its August 27 season opener vs. the Duquesne Dukes. On Friday, it lightened the workload a bit by rolling with just lowers but still kept the intensity high.

It’s been a pretty decent start to camp, with the Seminoles showcasing depth across the board that they haven’t had the privilege of enjoying for a few years now. Competition has been consistent throughout the first week and change, with head coach Mike Norvell happy — but not satisfied — with the Seminoles’ progress so far.

“I thought it was a good day for us to continue to grow. Today we just had helmets on, obviously scrimmage tomorrow night, you know hoping guys understand the intensity in all reps, whether you're in helmets, whether you're in full pads, whatever we’re doing we have a purpose for what we’re trying to accomplish... Human nature wants you to be comfortable, the mind will always tell you that you’re hot, you’re tired, sore, all of it... but have to be able to push with the mentality of giving everything I have, being in control and maybe not being as physical on a day that you don’t have shoulder pads, you have to be able to still get that quality of work.”

Hello everyone, happy Wednesday and welcome to Noles News Now, the latest in Florida State Seminoles sports, brought to you by Tomahawk Nation. I’m your host Perry Kostidakis — let’s jump right in.

Today is an off day for Florida State Seminoles football as it makes its way through preseason camp — FSU has six days of practice under its belt, with Tuesday being its first full day in pads after a few days of uppers. So far, consensus has been that this team is much deeper than it has been in the last few years — competition doesn’t fall off when the ones rotate out, and the newcomers, from transfers to freshmen, have begun to find their footing. Azareye’h Thomas, in particular, has stood out as one of the most consistent players across the board, let alone of freshmen. He’s still got a bit of a ways to go until he’s ready to take that and elevate to a game-in and game-out level, but he’s definitely on his way to becoming an impact player for FSU — and it’s looking like it could be this year.

The offensive and defensive line depth have been two of the main highlights — it’s resulted in plenty of competition in the run and pass game, as running back Trey Benson has looked fantastic and ready to take over Jashaun Corbin’s any-down back mantle. Jordan Travis, settled in as the guy at quarterback, has gotten a chance to be a bit more comfortable in the system and not have to force as much, while the defensive backs have showcased depth on depth on depth. Games still need to be played, obviously, and there’s still a lot to be proven, but feeling good after the first week of camp beyond the top guys is a far cry from where the Seminoles have been in years past.

FSU is gearing up for its first scrimmage on Saturday — until then, stay tuned to Tomahawk for coverage from the next few days of practice.

In other news, defending national champion Florida State soccer earned a number one preseason ranking in the coaches poll — the Seminoles have a few talented international players to replace, alongside others who graduated but still field a squad that’ll be a threat in the postseason in December. They kicked off practice on Tuesday as well, gearing up for a season opener vs. South Carolina on August 18th.

Florida State Seminoles head coach Mike Norvell has been a fan of what he’s seen early on in fall camp from his team.

A sentiment that’s been echoed since camp kicked off is that when the Seminoles threw on full pads, it would separate true progress from the incremental. Not only does the game obviously get more physical and faster, but it also affects a player’s movement, how they carry their weight, and fatigue as the day goes on.

Norvell, following Tuesday’s practice, met with the media to touch on impressions from that first day of full contact, as well as other takeaways from day six of FSU football preseason camp.

“I thought there was physical play...we tried to put them in series where they had to understand the situations that arose that were unscripted. Thought we got good work with guys, but still seeing players emerge. A lot of competition at a lot of positions.”

“For us going into this season, to get a great sense of who we are and what we do best and continue to grow the variations of that.”

Florida State finished their last big recruiting weekend of the Summer by picking up three commitments — graduate transfer Malik Feaster, 2024 defensive back CJ Heard and 2023 defensive back Ja’Bril Rawls.

In addition to the new Seminoles, the staff continued solidifying relationships with current commits while also positioning themselves with key targets.

Florida State Seminoles football is inching closer and closer to its season debut vs. the Duquesne Dukes on August 27.

The Seminoles have been out on the practice field since last week, putting in the early stages of work that will set the tone for the season as a whole.

“I thought we had good intensity...just working, trying to push the tempo," head coach Mike Norvell said after the SeminoIes' fifth practice. "I thought there was some good physicality that showed up. We challenged them....and I thought in the team sessions, there was a better focus and intensity on the work we were needing."

The dateline isn’t lying to you.

August has arrived, and with it comes Florida State football. The Seminoles are 26 days from heading into Doak for their first game of the season and the excitement around Tallahassee is already building with camp underway.

The full pads aren’t on just yet, but that’s not hampering the competitiveness.

The first week of fall camp is almost over and the guys definitely seem eager to get those full pads on.

So far it’s been soft pads, but the guys are still going full force. Some Sunday observations from our guy Tommy Mire today had AJ Duffy putting out his best performance so far, showing off his potential. DB Azareye’h Thomas was also the best out there. Sideline to sideline making plays. Could he be in for a breakout? Four days into camp, Mike Norvell is pulling ahead in his daily footrace with defensive tackle Robert Cooper. He’s up 3-1 now in their races to kick off camp. No matter how you slice it, the guys are loose.

There are so many more things happening from just a few short days into camp.

That big recruiting weekend included a whole bunch of top-tier guys visiting and a blue-chip commitment.

That came from four-star DB CJ Heard. He had a great commitment video. We called it the digital version of the hat fake out.

Four days into spring practice, Florida State Seminoles football head coach Mike Norvell has taken note of the effort and improvement he’s seen.

It’s been a bit of an increase in physicality and competition over the last two days of practice, with FSU putting on shoulder pads for the first time on Friday in anticipation of going full pads on Tuesday.

Norvell spoke on his impressions of the Seminoles’ work so far, complimenting the work of younger players and encouraged by the competition, effort and work that he’s seen of his team so far.

“You’re seeing that confidence continue to emerge...we just gotta continue to clean up the details,” he said. “I’m just continuing to push that mindset regardless of circumstances or the things going on around you, you just keep coming out being your best and focus on those details.”

The countdown is on to Florida State Seminoles football’s season opener vs. the Duquesne Dukes, and FSU is three days deep into its 2022 fall camp.

It’s been a great early start to preseason camp — with FSU bringing back plenty of experience at multiple positions, the Seminoles have been able to focus on mastering the nuances of head coach Mike Norvell’s system, rather than learning it.

The Seminoles put on shoulder pads for the first time this preseason on Friday, allowing the players to be a bit more physical and begin the process of setting the tone for the entire 2022 season.

Norvell met with the media following Friday’s practice, saying he was impressed and pleased with the performance of the team’s first foray into contact, saying he saw explosive plays on both sides of the ball.

TALLAHASSEE — Florida State returned to the IPF this afternoon for their second day of fall camp.

Head coach Mike Norvell met with the media after, touching on initial takeaways as the Seminoles get prepped for the season opener.

“Today was a good day,” he said. “Obviously we wanted to be outside more, had some lightning in the area, so we had to be inside early and just ended up just for logistical purposes, you know, finishing up in there.”

“A [good] response to some of the things I wanted to see cleaned up. I thought the offense was better in a lot of the areas that I wanted to see.

You’re seeing continuity, understanding, and just how some concepts are coming together.”

Norvell was especially complimentary of the offense, giving props to quarterback Jordan Travis and the wide receiver room for execution and communication on the day.
