The first chapter of Esther impresses many readers as simple background information for the following story. Taking a hint from the Jewish Targums (Aramaic translations of the OT), Ron Lindo found that there are many allusions to 1 Kings 1-10, suggesting parallels between the Persian king, Ahasuerus (Xerxes), and Israel's King Solomon. Dr. Lindo is Assistant Professor of Christian Ministry at East Texas Baptist University. A Would-Be Solomonic Ruler, with Ron Lindo Jr.: Esther 1

The phrase, "the church of God," is used only by Paul in the NT, and occurs only once in the OT, in Nehemiah 13:1. Is Paul's use of the phrase under the influence of this OT passage, and, if so, what would the connection entail? <a title= "https://nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.gkbeale.com%2F&data=05%7C02%7Cjoy.chen%40wheaton.edu%7C0dca4202649a4498467908df0741e00e%7Cb7098c8ac6b24e8bba4c872cf5f00a20%7C0%7C0%7C639237651680145628%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=Nz%2FDre4sEzwdi0cudrt7q3tZM5EMw3tj99A7T%2B%2FICYI%3D&reserved=0" href= "https://nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.gkbeale.com%2F&data=05%7C02%7Cjoy.chen%40wheaton.edu%7C0dca4202649a4498467908df0741e00e%7Cb7098c8ac6b24e8bba4c872cf5f00a20%7C0%7C0%7C639237651680145628%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=Nz%2FDre4sEzwdi0cudrt7q3tZM5EMw3tj99A7T%2B%2FICYI%3D&reserved=0" data-outlook-id="62878f52-6b80-4899-8e3f-e8087faffc9b">Dr. Gregory Beale</a>, long time Professor of New Testament at <a title= "https://www.wheaton.edu/graduate-school" href= "https://www.wheaton.edu/graduate-school" data-outlook-id= "456fc3e1-1639-4759-abcc-f83c9de265a1">Wheaton College & Graduate School</a>, and elsewhere, is currently Professor of New Testament at Reformed Theological Seminary in Dallas. The Church of God, the Continuation of Israel, with G. K. Beale: 1 Corinthians 1:2 and Nehemiah 13:1

Dr. John Walton, Professor of Old Testament at Wheaton College, offers 10 reasons for why reading the Bible in the original languages is important.

10 Reasons the Original Languages are Important Exegetical Work

Dr. Jon Laansma discusses the decline in language study in the west and how important it is to wrestle with the biblical languages.  Although we have great translations, no one who learns Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic regrets it. It changes the landscape of biblical studies.

How Important are the Languages and Why?

Veteran interpreter Dr. John Walton describes the process of exegesis — from choosing a text, analyzing the genre and background, and grappling with the “linguistic core" — in this step-by-step explanation of how exegesis is done.

What Is Exegesis?

"Exegetically Speaking" is a weekly podcast of the friends and faculty of Wheaton College, IL and The Lanier Theological Library. Hosted by Dr. David Capes, it features language experts who discuss the importance of learning the biblical languages—Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek—and show how reading the Bible in the original languages "pays off." Each podcast lasts between seven and eleven minutes and covers a different topic for those who want to read the Bible for all it is worth. Click on the ⓘ symbol below for each episode to read the description.

If you're interested in going deeper, learn more about Wheaton's undergraduate degree in Classical Languages (Greek, Hebrew, and Latin) and our MA in Biblical Exegesis.
