Denise Chisholm, Director of Quantitative Market Strategy joins us today for another instalment of her sector and factor watch. Today’s show focuses on a few key themes: the steep rise in energy prices, inflation, recessionary risks, interest rates, and wage spikes. Looking at the U.S. Federal Reserve and rates, Denise shares that when the Fed raises interest rates, the yield curve compresses and then we ultimately end up contracting, which is not where we are yet. Denise also explains we’ve seen three successive shocks that suggest de-globalization may be happening. Those three shocks were tariffs, the pandemic, and geo-political risk. Per usual Denise also shares which sectors and factors to pay attention too. One key area is the financial sector which Denise shares is still interesting given the risk/reward factors affecting the market.

Today we’re looking at global markets with Naveed Rahman, Institutional Portfolio Manager. Naveed is on the team behind Fidelity Global Intrinsic Value Class, which includes portfolio managers Joel Tillinghast, Salim Hart, Morgen Peck and Sam Chamovitz. Fidelity Global Intrinsic Value Class focuses on companies undervalued by the market and that have the potential for long-term capital appreciation. Today Naveed provides an update on the fund with host Pamela Ritchie, and also notes the fund doesn’t necessarily have a mandate to be a low beta downside risk portfolio, but it is a happy impact. Naveed also shares his thoughts on the crisis in Ukraine, noting the market had a very defined direction prior to the Ukraine crisis. That direction was the markets being focused on what the central banks would do to combat high inflation.

Denise shares her thesis that inflation might have more headwind this year than last year and if inflation decelerates, real wages might be very stable.
