U.S. OPEN TO ALLOW RUSSIAN & BELARUSIAN ATHLETES TO COMPETE THIS YEAR

DR. GORFINKEL IS CONCERNED ABOUT ENDING MASK MANDATES IN HEALTHCARE SETTINGS

As of last Saturday, the province ended remaining vaccine mandates including in healthcare settings. Hospital leaders including Kevin Smith of the UHN publicly made clear that they would keep a mask policy in place amid the continued threat of COVID. But, what will the situation be in clinics and the doctor's office? Dr. Gorfinkel has made it clear that mask wearing will continue to be required in her place of work. She joins Jane to discuss her concerns about the ending of the mask mandates in high-risk indoor settings.

COVID-19 TESTING AT AIRPORTS AND VACCINE MANDATES FOR TRAVELLERS TO END

Jane Brown is joined by Dr. Barry Pakes, Medical Officer of Health for York Region, Martin Firestone, President, Travel Secure Inc., Trevor McPherson, President and CEO, Mississauga Board of Trade.

This week we learned that Ottawa will be ending the vaccine mandate for federal employees and workers in federally regulated sectors as well as air travellers on domestic flights and those going on outbound international flights. Late last week, we also learned that the feds are getting rid of random COVID-19 testing at airports. So, will these policy changes alleviate the bottlenecks, delays and other issues at Pearson and other major airports? Our experts weigh in from a scientific, business and leisurely travel standpoint.

Today: we begin discussion with the latest on the Conservative leadership race. Jean Charest, one of the leadership hopefuls, says that Pierre Poilievre's claim of 311,958 membership signups is “Pierreinflation.” Patrick Brown is the only other candidate in the race to release his own membership signups which he says has reached 150,000 so far. The executive Director of the Conservative Party of Canada told the leadership candidates to expect over 600,000 membership votes this time around. To put it in perspective, when Justin Trudeau ran for the leadership of the Liberals in 2013, there were a total of 294,002 membership signups and tat also included non-paying members. So, regardless of whether the numbers have been inflated or not, what would a record number of member votes be a sign of? Could it be direct reaction to the way the current Trudeau Liberals are governing? Meanwhile, Ottawa is set to announce that the vaccine mandates for air and train passengers travelling domestically as well on incoming international flights will be ended. And, we also learned late last week that the feds will get rid of randomized testing at airports. Is this a direct response to the long delays, and bottlenecks at Pearson International and other major Canadian airports?

ALEK MINASSIAN SENTENCING HEARING

Libby Znaimer is joined by criminal defence lawyer Ari Goldkind.

Today, the court began hearing the victim impact statements as part of the sentencing hearing for Alek Minassian who was  found guilty of 10 counts of first-degree murder and 16 counts of attempted murder last year for the April 23, 2018 van attack. The sentencing was delayed while the judge waited for the Supreme Court to rule on whether it is constitutional to impose consecutive life sentences along with consecutive time for parole ineligibility. The court decided that was cruel and unusual punishment, which means these impact statements will have no impact on the sentence! What do you think of that decision?

It was an election that saw Doug Ford's PCs win a second majority government, and two of the opposition parties--the NDP and Liberals--become leaderless.
