Fighting On Film - The War Movie Podcast!

Pierre Schoendoerffer's 1965 film 'The 317th Platoon' follows an ill-fated French platoon as they attempt to reach a village held by friendly forces during the final days of the battle of Bien Dien Phu. Shot in black and white in Cambodia around the time of the U.S. ramping up their military involvement in Vietnam, the film depicts jungle combat with a stark realism often unseen in Western cinema of that era. We also look at your favourite depictions of French Forces on film!

This week we pull up at the Drive in, to cover 1959's Paratroop Command. A classic 50s B movie, directed by cult 50's director William Witney. The film follows a squad of U.S Paratroops from North Africa to Italy during the 2WW who have to deal with the aftermath of one of their squad making a fatal mistake. It was a reworked version of the late Samuel Fuller's 1980 passion project 'The Big Red One' with additional footage added. 'LEE' stars Kate Winslet as the revered model-turned-war correspondent Lee Miller, in this new biopic from Sky Cinema. The boys were lucky enough to watch an advanced screening of the film and give their thoughts ahead of its full theatrical release on the 13th September in the UK. From Miller's time in France pre-war to her time at the front in 1944. The film shows Lee's work with care and respect for not only her craft but the people she captured with her trusty Rolliflex.

This week we explore the incredible career of the brilliant and prolific British character actor Percy Herbert. Chances are if you've seen some of the all-time classic war movies of the 1950s, 60s, and 70s then you'll recognise Percy Herbert. We are thrilled to be joined by his daughter Katrina Wood, Katrina shares some incredible stories about her father and the many films he worked on. With over 90 film and TV appearances he became one of Britain’s most recognisable supporting actors with roles in Cockleshell Heroes, A Hill In Korea, The Bridge on the River Kwai, Sea of Sand, Tunes of Glory Guns at Batasi, Tobruk and The Wild Geese.

A few weeks ago we had the pleasure of hosting a discussion at We Have Ways Festival 2024 about the making of the classic war film A Bridge Too Far with the fantastic Sebastian Abineri.
