Winter can feel endless—more darkness, colder days, and the temptation to just “get through” until spring arrives. But Scripture calls us to rejoice in the Lord always and give thanks in all circumstances, even when we don’t love the season we’re in.
Paul wrote “Rejoice… always” while in prison and no stranger to hardship. That makes his instruction even more striking: joy isn’t rooted in comfort, but in Christ. Contentment grows when we look to Jesus as our strength and choose to praise Him in every season.
If we’re willing to look, even winter holds reminders of God’s beauty and grace—like snow that reflects the Creator’s majesty and points us to the One who makes us clean and new.
TONIGHT’S SCRIPTURE
“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!” — Philippians 4:4
YOUR NIGHTLY PRAYER
God,
In these cold, dark days, I admit I’m tempted to rush past this season and wish it away. I want warmth, light, and new life. But tonight, I ask You to teach me to rejoice in You—not only when life feels bright and easy, but even when it feels quiet, bleak, or heavy.
Lord, train my heart for contentment. Help me remember that joy isn’t something I manufacture through better circumstances; it’s something I receive as I look to You. When I’m tired, discouraged, or impatient, be my strength.
Open my eyes to see Your goodness in the middle of winter. Let the beauty in this season remind me that You are kind, steady, and faithful—and that in Christ You have covered my sin and given me Your righteousness. As I rest tonight, help me rejoice in You again.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
THREE THINGS TO MEDITATE UPON
Notice one winter gift.
What is one part of winter you can name as beautiful or meaningful—snowfall, quiet mornings, cozy light, slower rhythms?
Anchor joy to God’s character.
Choose one verse that reminds you who God is (faithful, near, strong, good). How can you keep it close this week—on your phone lock screen, a sticky note, or prayed aloud each morning?
Let winter comforts become reminders.
Warm blankets, hot drinks, lights in the dark—how can these ordinary comforts remind you that the Lord meets you in the quiet and provides what you need, one day at a time?
