    I love history!

    I even pick up history textbooks and read them for fun. There! I admitted it!

    How about you? Do you love history?

    However, not every teen is born loving history. So, I have looked for ways to bring history alive. We read historical fiction, make timelines, look at maps, watch movies, make crafts, time travel in the kitchen,  create radio dramas, and write poetry.

    We also throw parties to study history!

    Yes, we do!

    We have had medieval banquets, archaeology digs, luaus, 1950s sock hops, Victorian teas, and Ancient Greek Olympics.

    Is that a lot of work you ask.

    Well, yes and no. We love parties, so I am motivated if it means people I like, good food, and lots of wholesome fun! My kids love parties, too.
    How We Learn History by Planning a Party
    We have to research history to create an authentic experience. We dig deeper than normal to find out what they wore, what they ate, exactly what they did, where they did it, and why they did it.

    When we planned our Ancient Greek Olympics, we learned that the games were a form of worship to their idol/gods. They opened each day by committing everything to one or more of the idol/gods or idol/goddesses. We decided to open our ceremonies in prayer and commit the whole event to Jesus. Then we learned about all the events and how they competed. In the process, we learned about Greek city-states and their relationships with one another. We discovered some funny stories along the way.

    The same thing happed when we planned our medieval banquet. We learned all about nobility and the different titles to discover who would sit "above the salt." We also learned about knights, jousting, and tournaments, even though we ended up using pool noodles for our own jousting tournament.
    History Party Ideas
    Ancient Times: Archaeology Dig, Ancient Greek Olympics, Passover Feast,

    Middle Ages: Medieval Banquet,  Morality Play & Pageant

    Modern Times: Luau, Victorian Tea, Sock Hop (1850s), Square Dance (wild west), Come as Your Favorite Decade Party (20th Century), Miniature Golf Tournament (1920s), Disco Dance (1970s), English Country Dance (1700s)
    How to Plan a History Party

    * Plan the time and day
    * Choose location (keep in mind how many people will be coming and the weather if it's outside)
    * Plan Outfits (it's always fun to dress up)
    * Plan Decorations
    * Plan Activities
    * Create a Flexible Timetable
    * Plan the Menu
    * Put one person in charge of the flow of the event

    Making It Work
    Delegate where you can

    * Put one person in charge of the flow of the event
    * Put one person in charge of set up/decorating

  • When Worldviews Collide
    In “When Worldviews Collide,” Episode #071, Meredith Curtis explains how worldviews collide in our culture, especially on the college campus. She shares how she equipped her children to recognize worldviews in their professors and fellow students so that they could defend the Christian faith and share the Gospel. This doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Prepare now to recognize different worldviews and understand your own worldview. There are positive ways to share your worldview with gentleness and respect. Know the Truth, recognize deceit, understand the most common arguments each worldview uses, and defend the Truth. You can do it!

  • ENOUGH! We Are Free!
    In “ENOUGH! We are Free!,” Episode #068, Meredith Curtis explains how one event led to another, resulting in our Founding Fathers declaring our Independence. If you are hazy on the details of events leading to the day we celebrate, July 4, 1776, where Ben Franklin declared, “Well, we either all hang together or we’ll all hang separately” and John Hancock signed his lavish signature big and bold, saying, “There now the king can read it without his spectacles!” join us. Meredith shows how the Great Awakening, the French and Indian War, the Proclamation Line of 1763, the Boston Massacre, the seizure of the Liberty, the Boston Tea Party, Paul Revere’s Ride, Patrick Henry’s Speech, the Battles of Lexington and Concord, and more led to our Founding Fathers deciding, “Enough! We are declaring ourselves to be a free and independent nation with God’s help.” Take a whirlwind tour of several decades culminating in the signing of our precious Declaration of Independence.

    Our history is British. The 13 American colonies who became the United States of America were all British colonies.
    English Common Law
    Rights that Englishmen enjoyed:

    * representative government
    * trial by a jury of peers
    * accused faces accusers
    * protection of private property
    * everyone from King to peasant accountable to God and the law of the land

    Colonial Autonomy
    Colonists from the beginning enjoyed a large amount of freedom and self-government.

    * The Pilgrims signed the Mayflower Compact
    * the Massachusetts Bay Company stockholders who made decisions for the colony all lived in Boston
    * New England enjoyed town hall meetings
    * Virginians elected representatives who enjoyed autonomy

    Great Awakening
    Revival brought unity that crossed denominational lines that often separate people. Revival erased the division of colony boundaries.
    French & Indian War
    Trained the colonists for war, taught them to work together against a common enemy.

    Big problem: The British soldiers would not go home.
    Proclamation Line of 1763
    To keep their word to the Native Americans who fought on the side of the British, Parliament passed a law protecting land west of the Proclamation Line of 1763 for the Native Americans.
    Taxes
    Parliament taxed the American colonists here, there, and everywhere. Most of it was to pay off the debt from the French and Indian War, but some was just because they could.

    Representatives from several colonies also met together and sent a protest letter to the king. In 1766, Founding Father Ben Franklin traveled to London, appearing before Parliament, asking them to repeal the Stamp Act.

    Repeal the Stamp Act they did. However, the passed the Declaratory Act right away saying, “we can pass any law we want to in the colonies!” It was like a slap in the face. British citizens were supposed to have representation. The cry began, “No taxation without representation!”

    The New York Assembly voted to ignore the Quartering Act on December 15, 1766. They refused to fund the British soldiers. Outraged, King George III, disbanded the New York Assembly. Things were heating up!

    What men need from their wives, children, and other important people in their lives is respect, listening, and freedom to lead.

    Respect
    Ephesians 5:33: “The wife must see to it that she respects her husband.”

    Respect is more important to a man than love; in fact, respect communicates love to a man.

    Listen
    Proverbs 1:5: “A wise man will hear and increase in learning, And a man of understanding will acquire wise counsel.”

    Listening to a father’s counsel communicates respect to him and benefits to you.

    Follow
    Dad can’t lead if no one follows.

    How do we interact with Dad?

    Things NOT to do: Rate his leadership, talk about him negatively to Mom, siblings, and others, feel superior to him.

    Special Word to Children & Teens
    Something magnificent about Daddies

    Proverbs 17:6: “Grandchildren are the crown of old men, And the glory of sons is their fathers.”

    Devil’s Plan: Brokeness.

    God’s Plan: Hearts Unified.

    Malachi 4:6: “He will restore the hearts of the fathers to their children and the hearts of the children to their fathers, so that I will not come and smite the land with a curse.”

    Autonomy/Freedom to submit.

    Protection.

    Hebrews 12:9: “Furthermore, we had earthly fathers to discipline us, and we respected them; shall we not much rather be subject to the Father of spirits, and live?”

    Respecting our fathers is a small picture of how we are to respond to the Lord.

    Special Word to Wives
    Ephesians 5:33: “The wife must see to it that she respects her husband.”

    Husband’s Role to Lead and ours to follow.

    Autonomy. Freedom to submit & follow.

    Protection.

    Your Husband is not a woman; don’t expect him to be your girlfriend.

  • Fight Fair
    In “Fight Fair,” Episode #065, Meredith Curtis reveals the truth: Conflict is inevitable, but yelling, screaming, and saying things you regret is not. Meredith will teach you to argue without raising your voices, disagree without becoming enemies, work through conflict to achieve win/win, and forgive one another after the dust has settled. This biblical method found in Matthew 18, Proverbs, and James works! It can work in your household, too.

    Conflict. Every marriage has it. Every set of siblings engages in it. Conflict is a fact of life.
    You won’t be able to remove conflict from your home, but you can change how conflict is handled.
    Why Do We Experience Conflict in Relationships?
    Proverbs 18:1: “An unfriendly person pursues selfish ends and against all sound judgment starts quarrels.”

    James 4:1-3: “What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? 2 You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. 3 When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.”

    We experience conflict because we struggle to resist selfishness and greed in our own hearts. Our agenda becomes more important than others’. We experience conflict because we indulge our flesh, instead of looking to Jesus.

    Our only hope to avoid conflict is to surrender to Jesus.
    Know When to Drop It
    The most important thing to learn is to learn when to drop something before a fight ensues. Pride and anger often cause things to escalate quickly.

    Proverbs 15:18 “A hot-tempered person stirs up conflict, but the one who is patient calms a quarrel.”

    Proverbs 17:14: “Starting a quarrel is like breaching a dam; so drop the matter before a dispute breaks out.”

    Proverbs 20:3: “It is to one’s honor to avoid strife, but every fool is quick to quarrel.”

    Examine some old conflicts. How did they escalate? What could have been done to stop them from escalating into a quarrel?
    Disagree with Kindness & Respect
    A disagreement is when two people see things from a different perspective or have different goals.

    Sometimes one person is all wrong and the other is all right, but often there is fault on both sides.

    Humility keeps things from becoming ugly.

    Proverbs 22:10: “Drive out the mocker, and out goes strife; quarrels and insults are ended.”

    Matthew 18:15: “ If your brother or sister[ sins,[go and point out their fault, just between the two of you. If they listen to you, you have won them over.”

    Disagree without becoming enemies. Come with humility, asking questions.
    Work Through Conflict Successfully
    Keep it between the two of you.

    Proverbs 26:17: “Like one who grabs a stray dog by the ears is someone who rushes into a quarrel not their own.”

    Don’t involve others through gossip. Only bring in a third person if you two can’t work it out.

    If children can’t work it out, that third person should be a sibling.

    Win/Win. Let your motive be for the other person’s best, as well as your own.

    Philippians 2:1-4: “Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion,
