Today on the show I have Ralph Gracie Brown Belt and Judo Black Belt Yoshi Yamaguchi. Yoshi is a super charismatic, booming personality, and heir apparent to the Kurt Osiander move of the week. This is fitting as Yoshi trained under Kurt for so long. You have got to see his videos on your social platform of choice, they are really fun to watch, the kid is a star. Yoshi is also quite insightful, honest and candid. In the episode we talk about taking long breaks, Judo for BJJ, belt expectations and so much more.

In this episode, I pontificate on our current economic crisis and its impact on the BJJ community. The focus of the talk takes the hypothetical positions of what an academy owner and a student could/should be considering at present to prepare for what is coming, or what I believe to be here. I'm pretty much spitballing in the episode and although I've put a lot of thought into it I'm sure I've missed some critical viewpoints and I'd appreciate all your thoughts and feedback on the matter.

Today on the show I have 10th Planet Decatur Black Belt, Matt Skaff. Matt is a black belt under Brandon McCaghren. Matt also hosts his own fantastic podcast called The Grappling Discourse.
In this episode we discuss several interesting items such as when being an instructor is not for you, what is a Jiu Jitsu coach vs an instructor, when to seek a coach, what it takes to be a coach, private lessons vs coaching, how to optimize private lessons, learning styles, the benefits of rolling with the opposite sex, and much more.
Ok one housekeeping note, in the episode we make reference to a “Lindsey”, we are referring to Lindsey McCaghren co-owner of 10th Planet Decatur.

Today on the show I have first degree black belt under Eddie Bravo and one of the founders of 10th Planet Portland, Oregon, Phill Schwartz. Phill is one of the most underrated Jiu Jitsu minds in Jiu Jitsu at present. Phill is one of the “OG’s” in the 10th planet system, he was there during the early formation of the organization. This is an information dense episode I’m sure you will get value out of. Some of the things we cover in the episode are:
And much more.

Today on the show I have the honor of speaking to the no gi Jiu Jitsu phenom William Tackett. William is a 21 year old Black Belt under Rodrigo Cabral where he teaches and trains at Brazilian Fight Factory in Austin, TX. William has competed against the best BJJ athletes in the world, racking up wins against Andrew Wiltse, Tex Johnson, John Combs, Rousimar Palhares, Dante Leon, and many more. He recently took gold at what was arguably the toughest and greatest ADCC Trails to date, an incredible feat. William and the Tackett brothers are part of this new breed of young Jiu Jitsu practitioners who were raised with a dearth of modern Jiu Jitsu data, full time practice, and most importantly incredibly deep assimilation of the art. An amazing thing about William is that he is just getting better and better. In the episode, we talk about his unique upbringing which contributed to his success, his ideas on recovery, and training specifics.

Quentin “The Hitman" Rosenzweig earned his black belt from Ricardo Murgel at the age of 24. He is the Onnit Invitational 205lbs champ (having submitted both Roberto Jiminez & Kyle Boehm), Sapaterio Heavyweight Champ, and a champion in many other pro events. Today Quentin now runs 10th Planet Savannah GA. He has been a much feared leg locker in the Deep South for some time, so it’s nice to see him finally getting the attention he deserves on a national level. Quentin has a great mind for the art, in the episode he talks about his legendary training much of which you can watch on his Instagram account, how to develop competitors, running academies, his difficulty getting opponents to agree to matches, and so much more.

Today on the show we have Dave Tint, Dave is a 35 year old BJJ brown belt under Chad Bingham. Dave reminds me of the people I grew up around in blue collar Sonoma County, a straight shooter, hard working, gritty, you know, the salt of the earth type. I haven't met too many non professional practitioners who study Jiu Jitsu for hours a day off the mat like we do. I think this is what makes so many of my encounters with Dave always feel like an instant connection. As you will hear in the episode Dave genuinely loves Jiu Jitsu, it's one of his defining characteristics. He is a technical and dogged practitioner who has several competitions under his belt. Dave travels to several academies to train and has an impressive network of training partners and instructors he has connected with. He's even competed in one of Jeff Glovers, undisclosed location tournaments getting his hand raised by Mr. Glover himself.
Recently Dave suffered a massive heart attack that went undetected for several hours after training one day. It's a shocking story of, mistakes, bad luck, bad decision making, and it's really a miracle that he's still alive let alone training again. When I think of Dave I think of Hunter S. Thompson, both of which lived hard, did things we wish we had the guts to do, and has a wisdom that sits right below his ostensibly rough exterior. At times this was an incredibly difficult and emotional conversation for me (and Dave), as I’m asking a good person about their own mortality to their face as respectfully as possible.

As Hunter S. Thompson once said, "A man who procrastinates in his choosing will inevitably have his choice made for him by circumstance.".

Today on the show we have Nick The Tooth Gullo, You might know Nick for being the childhood friend of the UFC’s Dana White, but what some people don’t know is that Nick is an AOJ (Art of Jiu Jitsu) black belt under the legendary Mendes brothers. Nick has had a fascinating life, some of which he shares with us on the show, he truly is a renaissance man. In the episode we talk about the beginnings of AOJ, his BJJ evolution, lifting every day, 3 and 3 training, partner selection, 50+ BJJ, competing, what is the mushin mind, van/camper life, traveling, his sci-fi writings, moving to Italy, and so much more.

Today on the show we have Werther (Robot Dolphin) Marciales. Werther is a Jiu Jitsu brown belt under Sonny Parlin. Werther is also the owner of Fellowship Jiu Jitsu in Sarasota, Florida. I stumbled upon Werther's videos on YouTube and was very impressed with his content, delivery, and his intelligence far beyond his years. In this episode, we talk meritocracy, wrestling, technique, lessons learned being a new coach, and much more.

Today on the show we have Jay Pages. Jay is a fourth degree Caio Terra black belt, Jay owns the amazing Jay Pages academy in Tempe, Arizona with his black belt wife Lisa Pages. Jay is also the primary host of the west coast location of The BJJ Globetrotters week long camp, which typically occurs twice a year.
Let me preface this by saying I like Jay, I like Jay a lot. The minute I walked in his academy he was incredibly welcoming and when I was having trouble with a simple concept in one of the many sessions he was happy to assist. I was a solo traveling stranger there and he made this social/introvert a lot less nervous about being there. I loved this conversation, in the episode things get real, Jay shares with great transparency his insight into training methodologies, specific techniques, your game development, investing in yourself, and even some much appreciated personal stories.
