Chris Van Dusen is a Senior Partner at Solyco Capital as well as Chief Growth Officer and Partner in 3 exits through Acquisition. Solyco, is a vertically integrated investment firm that delivers capital solutions for late-stage startup and growth companies. They take a private equity approach to venture capital.  Solyco builds its portfolio of assets brand by brand - instead of through specific categories. Once the investment is secured, a partner led team is deployed on secondment to work alongside the portfolio company’s executive team. In 2022 Van Dusen joined Solyco. In addition to his non-profit work, Chris is a National Board member of Alder, a member of Entrepreneurs Organization(EO), and has traveled extensively speaking on a variety of topics. A life-long athlete he also has a black belt in Jiu Jitsu.

Most people suck at supporting others. Yeah I said it. You want to help but you end up making things worse. You jump in with unsolicited advice. You minimize their feelings. You compare their situation to someone else's. Stop doing that. Stop trying to give them perspective. Stop saying "it was meant to happen" or "you're better off" or "God doesn't give you more than you can handle." That's not helping. That's minimizing their pain. Those phrases make people feel small and unheard. You want to help? Validate their feelings instead. Say "that sucks" or "I can't imagine how painful that is." You're not validating what they're feeling. You're validating their right to feel something. Their emotions matter. Their emotions don't need to be hidden. Don't compare their situation to anyone else's. Don't say "I've been there" or "this happened to my friend too." Their pain is theirs. Their situation is unique. If you want them to find examples, ask questions. "Do you know anyone who went through something similar? How did they handle it?" Let them make the connections. Let them search for answers themselves. Check in with them. Say "I'm here if you need me." Then actually be there. Don't force yourself into their situation. Make yourself available. Let it be their choice to reach out. Show up with actions.Stop trying to fix everything. Stop minimizing their feelings. Stop making it about you. Just be present. Ask questions. Validate emotions. Show up with real help. That's what people need when life gets hard.

Philip Moranto's story hit me different. Former pro skateboarder turned mindset coach. But this isn't your typical athlete success story. This is about surviving chaos and choosing to rebuild. Philip grew up in a world most of us can't imagine. Father had him at 47. Brothers in their 50s. Out till one in the morning as a kid with older crowds. Violence. Drugs. Crime. All before he was even a teenager. Skateboarding saved his life. Gave him structure when everything else was falling apart. Purpose when the world felt purposeless. But here's what most people don't know about pro sports. The window closes fast. Really fast. At 25 Philip was told he was too old to pursue skateboarding. Twenty-five. Let that sink in. Most of his buddies fell off the financial cliff after their careers ended. No plan. No preparation. No understanding of life after the sport. Philip watched talented people end up homeless. Saw legends struggling just to survive. That's when everything changed for him. Between 24 and 28 his world collapsed. Lost his mom. Lost his grandma. Lost his dad. Business deals fell apart. He was heading down a dark path. But at 28 he made a choice. Started working on himself. Spent two years completely focused on becoming the best version of himself. That's when he discovered his real calling. Helping others do the same thing. Philip noticed something about the coaching industry. More coaches than ever. More people struggling than ever. Depression at all time highs. Anxiety through the roof. Something wasn't working. His approach is different. Real. Based on actual experience not just theory. His wisdom comes from surviving chaos. Gen Z just dropped some serious wisdom on all of us. Their top three restaurants blew my mind. Not because of what they picked. But because of what it reveals about what actually matters to customers. Chick-fil-A hit number one. Yeah you heard that right. Not McDonald's with tens of thousands of locations. Chick-fil-A with just 2,300 restaurants. And all the political bullshit that surrounds them didn't matter one bit. Because Gen Z gets it.Chick-fil-A at number one shows us something incredible. They have what I call checkpoint systems. Rhythms with their customers. You talk to four different people by the time you get your food. Each one focused on making your experience better. And at the end they don't say thank you. They say "My pleasure." Those two words change everything. Because it's not just transactional. It's relational. Here's what every business owner needs to understand. Politics don't pay your bills. Customers do. And customers want to feel taken care of. They want consistency. They want to know you give a shit about their experience. If you don't have a customer journey planned out. If you don't create incredible service. If you don't build the right atmosphere. If you don't treat people right. They will find someone else who does. Period. Gen Z just proved that service beats everything else. Even political opinions. Even convenience. Even price sometimes. Way to go Gen Z. You know what it means to go ALL IN on what actually matters.

This conversation with Dennis Morolda on Building Men hit differently. We went deep into what it means to become a man when life forces you to grow up fast. How losing my dad at 16 changed everything. And why the moment my uncle caught me running from the house became one of the most defining moments of my life. When Dad got leukemia everything changed.  I was filming a TV show called Two-Minute Drill with David Meltzer last week. Pitch show format like Shark Tank but for pitching not funding. I was a guest judge alongside pro athletes and celebrities. One of them was Austin Eckler. Running back for the Los Angeles Chargers. And this dude's intensity blew me away. Austin's face was frozen in concentration the entire time. So intently listening to every pitch that they had to do reaction shots of him after because his expression never changed. You could see how he plays football just by watching him judge these pitches. That devotion to the moment. That intensity. It was insane to witness. After we wrapped Austin comes up to me. Starts asking about my life. Kids. Business. Sports. Then he hits me with this question. What's your biggest financial tip for me. I'm like excuse me. Here's a dude making millions of dollars a year in the NFL asking me for financial advice. And I found out he's only 27 years old. What really struck me was when Austin said he loves getting around people who are older than him. One generation above. Because of the wisdom that takes place. And I truly believe wisdom doesn't actually start until you get into your 40s. I wasn't wise in my 20s. Wasn't wise in my 30s. But now in my young 40s I'm starting to see things differently. There's no rush to figure it all out if you're in your 20s or early 30s. Society puts pressure on you but get around people one generation above you. Let their wisdom accelerate your journey. Austin asking me for advice reminded me how powerful that generational wisdom exchange can be.
