The Capitals defense was pretty sound overall last year, but the Capitals have some big decisions to make in the off season.

Orlov, Jensen, Gustafsson and van Riemsdyk are all slated to hit free agency next summer. How many of those players will they retain and how many will move on to other teams? It will open up $9.35 mil in cap space leaving the Caps with some big questions to answer.

“Hopefully it’s motivational,” MacLellan said Thursday. “Guys are playing for next contracts, playing for jobs. Yeah, I think it’s a good thing.”

The Capitals have placed all their chips on the new goalie tandem of Darcy Kuemper and Charlie Lindgren. Will that tandem be enough for the Capitals to be contenders in the metro?
