Stephen Silverbear McComber is a seedkeeper and a recently elected chief on the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke whose portfolio is sustainable development. Silverbear tells us about the seeds that different people shared with him while visiting different First Nations communities within the Confederacy. He tells us how he has taken care of these seeds and a generation later, he has been able to return some of these seeds to the families of the folks who shared them with him, and the joy and connection that this brings. Silverbear explains how he plants by the phases of the moon, and what crops he plants during different periods, how the spring has been starting later than it used to and the autumn is also ending later and the challenges that creates for growing food. Silverbear explains how it is important to select corn and other crops to adapt to this changing environment and to your bioregion. We then do a deep dive into growing squash for seed and hand pollination techniques.

Today, host Alex Ball sits down with Chirstian Flickinger of Renegade Acres to discuss their certified organic heirloom vegetable farm and their organic seed business, Garden Hoard.
They are a year round operation growing produce through the spring-fall for sale to farmers markets while saving and processing seeds for winter packaging and sales. Their business started as a seed business, Garden Hoard, and grew into the actual production farm Renegade Acres. Katie, who started the seed business, is a mastermind of planning and her family history with saving seeds was the start of the business.
A major discussion of the interview is work life balance, and Katie & Christian are working really hard to enjoy their lives outside of farming. By prioritizing experiences and time together outside of the farm they are finding balance in their lives and making their farm more productive. Farming is a full time lifestyle that can easily consume you, and they are working hard to not let that happen.
Follow Christian & Katie on Instagram and check out their incedible seed website!

Welcome back to Collab Farm, the podcast where we talk about all the ways small- and mid-scale farmers can work together, even in big $10 million food system rebuilding kinds of ways. Like this conversation that I had with Lexi Close from Appalachia Regional Cooperative Development and the Appalachia Producers Co-op. Now, Lexi is involved with much of the work going on in a cooperative beef processing facility that's currently under construction in Washington County, Eastern Tennessee. We get into how the project got started from the initial idea to the feasibility studies to raising such a large amount of capital. We also get into how the membership works, including some collective marketing opportunities for local producer members for the Eastern Tennessee region, and what these decentralized processing networks look like as much as 100 years ago, what we lost in centralization And how they can serve as a model for building them back.

Babies, I consider it one of the hallmarks of professionalism to bring you people who share our tendency towards obsession, because we all know that obsession is the wellspring of genius and madness, but the best obsessions bring forth the most exquisite results. And today, we are talking to not one, but two beautifully, and I mean it, beautifully obsessed people. It is my extreme pleasure to introduce you to my very dear friends Robin Touchet and Kevin Pike of Branchwater Farms. Robin and Kevin have an incredible backstory. They have this beautiful website. I can't recommend enough that you go and read it all and look at it all. It's so pretty and well done and well thought. But more than that, they're making amazing spirits. Their story is incredible. We will get into some of it. They both have a wine background. They've graduated to something much stronger, and they've landed in this beautiful farm in the Hudson Valley. We're gonna get into all the things with Kevin and Robin, and they do their production of the various things that they grow, their ambitions are to be no -till, and we talk about the struggles with that along the way. It's a fascinating journey, and they are so wonderful, and I highly recommend you check them out and follow them.
