JB here - been busy juggling projects and a day job so I haven't had time to do much for the pod. Big shout out to Jary our second string editor who's been working on all of our bonus episodes for the Patreon and who helped with this episode. Also thanks to Cam for pulling double duty while I was MIA. Ok, that's enough editorializing.
On this episode, Cam sits down with Vermont-based cartoonist Natlie Norris to discuss her new book at Fantagraphics, Dear Mini: A Graphic Memoir.

*Another week goes by and another episode pops up in your stupid little feed. We're joined with Brooklyn-based cartoonist and publisher Alex Laird to talk about his small press riso imprint Frog Farm, his thoughts on risograph and its relevancy in the scene, his process for making comics, and the comics events he organizes. It's a good one. Enjoy.
You can check out more of his work on his website and Frog Farm's webstore. Follow Alex on Instagram @alexanderlaird and Twitter @@alexander_laird, and also Frog Farm's Instagram @frogfarm.online.

What's the deal with anthologies? That's the question we posed to our two returning guests, Katie Skelly and Sean Knickerbocker. We discuss their experiences and approaches to organizing, running, and publishing an anthology comic and the variety of ways one can go about making them. That's right folks, nonstop comics talk on this one. Is there's a right way and a wrong way to do make them? Tune in and find out!

Summer is in full swing, so you know what that means! TIME TO TALK ABOUT COMICS WHILE INDOORS. Blast that AC, crack open a cold one, and take a break from your day job or whatever it is that you do for money and join us as we talk with Brooklyn-based cartoonist and tattoo artist Austin MacDonald. Austin has self-published numerous risograph mini-comics over the years and is currently planning out a new book with the Brooklyn-based small press riso publisher Frog Farm. We talk about how and why he got into making comics, his interest in risograph and the mini-comic format, what his process is like, and his day job as a tattoo artist.

As some of you may know, Cam has been dealing with several different personal issues over the last few months, so he's taking a break from the show until further notice. I expect him to return relatively soon, so don't fret. In the meantime, I'm going to do my best to keep thetalking flame alight. Last weekend was the much anticipated return of CAKE, or Chicago Alternative Comix Expo, after a three-year hiatus. And after tabling the entire weekend and seeing so many new and familiar faces, I think it's safe to say that we're back. Joining me in the post-CAKE celebration is Avi, the San Francisco-based owner and operator of Silver Sprocket Press to talk about his time at the show, as well as getting deep into his and Silver Sprocket's lore. From his humble beginnings as a boy genius, to managing bands and selling records for his DIY music label, Avi has done it all. And what's left to conquer? Comics of course. We talk about the development and evolution of Silver Sprocket, how he pivoted from selling music to selling funny books, and what's on the horizon for the plucky self-starter and his uniquely ambitious small press publisher.
Many people are saying that with the 100th episode in the can, it's all downhill from here. But worry not listener, for the boys are still doing this show for some reason. And what better way to kick off the next chapter in the Gutter Gang lore than with this week's guest, Minneapolis-based cartoonist, publisher, educator, and musician Zak Sally. We talk about his new book, Sammy the Mouse Book 3 (Killgore Books/La Mano 21), having returned from a nearly decade-long hiatus. We also discuss his return, why he needed to take a step back from small press comics, his time as an educator, and his overall thoughts on what comics means to him after nearly 30+ years in the game.
You can check out La Mano 21's webshop where you can purchase their fine publications and follow Zak on Instagram @zak_sally.

It's all come down to this. The 100th episode of Gutter Boys. It's going to be emotional. This one is packed to the gills with what the kids are calling content. To help us celebrate, we're joined with special returning guest Pat Rooks to reflect on the last four years of this thing of ours, his tabling experiences so far in 2023, and how his work has progressed since the last time he was in the hot seat. We also have a ton of voicemails left by friends, fans, and past guests to usher in our landmark episode. Be sure to listen carefully as you may recognize a voice or three. Or ten. What about twenty? How about thirty? You get the idea.

Wow! Gutter Gang, we're almost at the coveted 100th episode. Time sure does seem to fly when you're miserable. But before we pop open the champagne, we should first talk about this week's guest: Chicago-based cartoonist and illustrator Kevin Budnik. Renowned for his autobio series I Hope This Finds You and It's OK To Be Sad, Kevin is also a solid friend in the scene and it's embarrassing it took this long to have him finally on the show. We dive into how and why he went from posting diary comics every day to transitioning to Patreon to share his work, his time at Columbia College, his upcoming book and how it will be vastly different from his prior output, and how much the small press world has changed since ye old tumblr days.

The snow is melting and the sun is out. Folks, spring is back. And you know what else is back? Gutter Boys, that's right. And joining us to smell the proverbial flowers is LA-based comic artist Mark Martinez. We talk about his upcoming Godzilla book at IDW, how he went from doing a few alternate covers to a full blown story he will be writing and drawing, his journey in getting himself an education to sharpen his skills, and his love for tokusatsu movies and TV.

The boys couldn't get a mainfeed episode wrapped up in time due to time constraints and schedule conflicts, so for this week we present to you a bonus episode from the Patreon Vault featuring past guest and frequent frenemy Ramon Villalobos to review Funny Pages. Lots of varying opinions on this movie, with hotly contentious back-and-forths coupled with touches of homophobia and ableism. Who ends up coming out on top as the superior film enjoyer? Only way to find out is to listen to this very special roundtable discussion.
