En el episodio de hoy hablamos de todo esto, y no quiero adelantarte cuáles son las conclusiones a las que han llegado diferentes estudios, pero sí puedo contarte mi experiencia.

Después de más de 10 años enseñando español te puedo asegurar que mis alumnos miran el mundo de otra manera.

Hablar un idioma no es solo saber cientos de palabras, reglas gramaticales o expresiones....es acercarte a las diferentes culturas, entender mejor a los que te rodean, y ser más flexible en tu forma de vivir.

Porque en mi opinión, al final se trata de eso. De VIVIR.

Are multilingual people more intelligent than average? What does science say about this?

How does this ability affect our brains?It's a fascinating topic. I won't reveal the conclusions of the studies, but I can share my experience.

Having taught Spanish for over 10 years, I can assure you that my students see the world differently.

Speaking a language isn't just about knowing hundreds of words, grammar rules and expressions; it's about connecting with different cultures, understanding those around you better and adopting a more flexible perspective on life.

Because, in my opinion, that's what it's all about: LIVING!

Hay una serie de palabras que el 90% de mis alumnos usan mal.

Algunas de ellas son "falsos amigos", esas palabras que en tu idioma son muy similares, pero que en español tienen un significado muy diferente. Seguro que sabes de qué te hablo, ¿verdad?

Algunas de estas palabras te sonarán mucho, y otras quizás no tanto.

La cuestión es que hasta que no empiezas a utilizarlas, no eres consciente de que las usas mal. Y muchas veces, muchas, la persona que te escucha te entiende, y entonces no te corrige.

Por eso las clases de conversación funcionan tan bien. Porque practicas, disfrutas del proceso y casi sin darte cuenta tu español va mejorando.

A veces, mis alumnos no son conscientes de lo mucho que mejoran. Yo voy tomando notas de cada clase, y puedo ver cada mes la evolución. A veces muy evidente, otras muy sutil, pero siempre está. Y eso es lo que más me gusta de mi trabajo.

There are several words that 90% of my students misuse.

Some of these are 'false friends': words that sound similar in your language but have different meanings in Spanish. I'm sure you know what I mean.

Some of these words will sound familiar, and others perhaps not so much.

The point is that you don't realize you're using them incorrectly until you start using them. Often, the person listening understands you and doesn't correct you.

That's why conversation classes are so effective. You practise, enjoy the process and, almost without realizing it, your Spanish improves.

Sometimes my students aren't even aware of how much they're improving. I take notes in every class and can therefore see their progress each month. Sometimes it's obvious and other times it's more subtle, but it's always there. That's what I love most about my job.

I think we Spaniards can be a bit whiny.

It's in our DNA and our culture, although we can complain with wit and humour. But the reality is that we complain when it's hot, when it's cold, when there are too many people around, and when there aren't enough people around. The pianist James already said it in his "open letter to the Spanish people" in 2018.

And, of course, since we complain so much, we have many expressions for it.
