Después de varios días sin voz, por fín he podido grabar un nuevo episodio del podcast 👏👏👏.

In today's episode I'm going to tell you 6 Spanish expressions related to autumn that you can hear in your everyday life. They are related to autumn because they refer to typical foods of the season.​​​​​​​

We're starting a new season of the Speak & Learn Spanish Podcast with a new name: HABLANDO CLARO.

The podcast is still part of our project, of course, but we want to give it a bit more prominence and independence. We hope you like the change!

Hoy os voy a contar cómo surgieron las "canciones del verano" y muchas cosas más. Por cierto, son una forma genial de aprender y mejorar tu español, ¿no crees?

On the bus the other day, I couldn't help but overhear a conversation between two men sitting next to me. (By the way, if you live in Spain, listening to conversations is a good exercise to improve your Spanish... I don't know if it's very polite, but it's useful 😉)

The point is that one of them said something like "The only contribution we Spaniards have made to science is to add a stick to some things".​​​​​​​

It is not true, we have many very good scientists in Spain. In fact, we have had 2 Nobel Prize winners: Santiago Ramón y Cajal and Severo Ochoa.

But it is true that in Spain we joke about it a lot, because some of the most popular Spanish inventions have involved adding a stick to something. The lollipop 🍭 and the mop🧹 are the most famous.

Sometimes the simplest things work the best, don't you think?

El otro día iba en el autobús y no pude evitar escuchar la conversación de los dos señores que estaban sentados junto a mi (por cierto, si vives en España intentar entender las conversaciones de los demás es muy útil. No sé si es muy correcto... pero es un buen ejercicio 😉)

El caso es que uno de ellos dijo algo como "El único aporte que hemos hecho los españoles a la ciencia es poner un palo a las cosas". 

Eso no es cierto, España tiene muchos y buenos científicos, de hecho hemos tenido 2 premios nobel en ciencias: Santiago Ramón y Cajál, y Severo Ochoa.

Pero si es cierto que siempre hacemos bromas con esto porque algunos de los inventos españoles más populares han consistido simplemente, en poner un palo: el chupachús 🍭 y la fregona 🧹 son los más famosos. 

A veces las cosas más sencillas son las que mejor funcionan, ¿no crees?

When I was a child, I loved Agatha Christie novels. The crimes where the murderer seemed obvious, but where Detective Poirot always showed that appearances can be deceiving.

But as I grew up, I became less and less interested in detective stories. And in general the news about crimes etc... are not very interesting to me. They go unnoticed by me.

But it's difficult not to pay attention when something is happening and it's everywhere, in the news, in the magazines, on television....as we say in Spanish "está hasta en la sopa", the literal translation would be "it's even in the soup", and we use it to refer it's everywhere. It's impossible not to see it.

A crime in which reality surpasses fiction.

Cuando era niña me encantaban las novelas de Agatha Christie. Esos crímenes donde el asesino parece evidente, pero donde el detective Poirot siempre demostraba que las apariencias engañan.

Sin embargo, conforme fui haciéndome mayor, las novelas policíacas me fueron interesando menos. Y generalmente las noticias sobre asesinatos, etc... no me interesan mucho. Para mi pasaban desapercibidas. 

Pero es dificil no prestar atención cuando sucede algo y aparece continuamente en todas partes: periódicos, noticias, tv, revistas.... Y eso es lo que ha pasado con el crimen de Tailandia. Como decimos en español, "está hasta en la sopa", que quiere decir que está en todas partes. Es imposible no verlo.

When I started this project, I became obsessed with the idea of creating a method that would allow you to learn to speak Spanish without the need to learn grammar.

My reasoning was: What is the purpose of learning languages? COMMUNICATE. And the most common way to communicate is to SPEAK. And speaking is something natural, spontaneous, you don't need grammatical structure.

Today I still think that the final goal is SPEAK. But I am aware that there are many different ways to learn. 

I teach adults (with children is different), most of them know the grammar of their languages and sometimes, if they can compare it with Spanish grammar, it helps them to see it with more clarity. Makes the way easier.

After more than 7 years of teaching Spanish, I've learned to be less rigid and more flexible.

Cuando comencé con este proyecto me obsesioné un poco con crear una nueva metodología que te permitiera hablar en español sin necesidad de aprender gramática.

Mi razonamiento era el siguiente: ¿Cuál es el propósito de aprender idiomas?

COMUNICAR. La forma más común de comunicación es; HABLAR. Y hablar es algo natural, espontáneo, no necesitas una estructura gramatical.

Hoy sigo pensando que el objetivo último tiene que ser hablar. Pero soy

consciente, también, de que hay muchas formas diferentes de aprender. Yo enseño a adultos (con los niños es diferente), y la gran mayoría conoce la gramática en su idioma, por lo que poder compararla con la gramática española, a veces les da claridad. Facilita en camino.

Después de más de 7 años enseñando español, creo que he aprendido a no ser tan cuadriculada y ser más FLEXIBLE.

Through this podcast, in addition to learn Spanish, I would like to introduce you to some of the most important figures in Spanish history.

One of them, without a doubt, is Cristobal Balenciaga.

To be honest, I didn't know much about him until recently. A few days ago, when I was looking for a new series to watch with my husband, Disney + recommended this one:

Cristobal Balenciaga. I loved it and I'll tell you why:

Sometimes my students ask me to recommend Spanish series. Of course I recommend this one, but you have to know that it's recorded in 3 languages: Spanish, French and Euskera. 

Balenciaga was born and raised in the north of Spain, in the Basque Country, where Basque is spoken alongside Spanish. It's one of the five co-official languages in Spain.

He lived for a long time in Paris, where he became the king of haute couture. Coco Chanel and Christian Dior considered him a great master.

A través de este Podcast me gustaría que, además de aprender español, conozcas algunos de los personajes españoles más relevantes de nuestra historia. 

Uno de ellos es, sin duda, Cristobal Balenciaga. 

Si te soy sincera, hasta hace poco no sabía mucho sobre él. Pero en otro día, buscando una nueva serie para ver con mi marido, nos apareció en Disney + la recomendación: Cristobal Balenciaga. Me ha encantado, y te voy a decir por qué.

Muchas veces mis alumnos me piden recomendaciones de series para ver en español. Esta sin duda la recomiendo, aunque tenéis que saber que en la serie se hablan 3 idiomas: El español, el francés y el euskera.

Balenciaga nació y creció en el norte de España, en el Pais Vasco, donde además del español se habla también el euskera o vasco. Una de las 5 lenguas cooficiales que hay en nuestro país.

Vivió durante años en París, donde se convirtió en el rey de la alta costura. Coco Chanel y Cristian Dior le consideraban el gran maestro.
