Our season of Christian horror and Halloween films begins with this family-friendly thriller about a group of teens who, through Jesus's power, become magically fused with their Halloween costumes to fight an evil real estate investor with supernatural abilities. Directed by one of our faves, Jason Campbell, and co-written with his frequent collaborator Bobby Lacer, HALLOWEEN HEROES refreshingly avoids making too big of a deal about the scary imagery of the Halloween holiday. Some conservative or ultra-paranoid Christians see Halloween as a window that lets in demonic forces; according to this movie, Methodists just see Halloween as another fun excuse for church togetherness and fellowship, promoted through an annual "trunk or treat" celebration that allows kids to collect candy in the safety of their own church's parking lot. However, local villain Brutus Snively hopes to spoil Halloween fun. He manipulates the weather, stops the flow of time, and even conjures a giant shark to appear in a freshwater lake in order to torment his neighbors so much that they sell him their homes and flee town. Snively would like to control the city; however, the prayers of a few plucky teens and the costumes they purchased from HalloweenCostumes.com threaten to give him the scare of a lifetime.
