It's always better to find someone else in this situation. But if they're truly a sacred cow, there are a couple routes to take. One route is to just accept it. You can set your expectations and accept the situation for what it is so there's no surprises. It might be the path of least resistance. The other route is to go all in. Take them out to dinner, meet their spouse, and start building a real friendship with them. Understand that when people blame others for their failures, it's typically the result of low self-esteem. But if you can get them on your team, you may have a shot at changing these behaviors at the root.
